NATO members came to America's aid in Afghan without hesitation. Many of those NATO soldiers never made it back home. And NATO never sent America a bill. Let that sink in for a moment.

When we have nations paying 1% gdp and other hitting 2-3%, questions rightly should be asked and it gives doubters of NATO fuel for criticism. 1987 was the year that Trump was recruited by the KGB. He went to the USSR looking for the hotel deal that he was still looking for when he ran in 2016. Back then the KGB would as a matter of course seek to get kompromat on foreign businessmen visiting the USSR, even if they didn't have immediate use for them. They'd just put the compromising information in the files for later use if the opportunity presented itself, which it did for Trump in spades. He was probably too dumb to even realize he was being recruited, but as the buttons to push in his case were obvious to the KGB there is no doubt they got him. He is clearly susceptible to flattery, and being told what a stable genius he is. That would cost the KGB nothing. He also seems to have a penchant for East European blondes. The KGB would have had no trouble rustling up a few of those for him to pick from. And he was clearly motivated by money, which he seemed always to be short of back then. The Russian spy masters could handle that too. In fact, Russia has been funneling money to him for years now through sweetheart real estate deals with Russian oligarchs and mafia types. Putin helping get him elected in 2016 was probably the greatest agent of influence operation in history. He's looking to repeat in 2024. The Tucker Carlson propaganda piece was the first step in that.

Trump has for years inaccurately described how NATO funding works. NATO has a target that each member country spends a minimum of 2% of gross domestic product on defense, and most countries are not meeting that target. But the figure is a guideline and not a binding contract, and it does not create “bills”; member countries haven’t been failing to pay their share of NATO’s common budget to run the organization.

      What is also quite fascinating:
Germany, which Trump hates so much, is providing more help to Ukraine in terms of % of GDP than the US.
Germany has spend 1% of their GDP to support Ukraine and the US has spend 0.32% of its GDP.
The entire EU, which has a smaller economy than the US, has spend more for Ukraine.
Countries like Lithuania and Estonia have spend 2% of their GDP to support Ukraine.
Also, on a different note, the US spends so much on the military partly, because it has nukes. With Trump's comments, there is a debate within the EU now to get nukes for Europe. The spending will definetly rise then and the 2% will be more than met... however.... a world with more nukes, Saudis going for them, Quatar going for them, everyone with money going for them... is that in the US' interest 🤔

If the Russians had the decency to peacefully leave Europe in 1990... so should the US occupation forces and the nuclear warheads. The US army should be used to defend the US border and US interests, instead of occupying Europe.

Some commenters have suggested Trump doesn't understand the importance of NATO, and nearly every news article/video is premised on that idea. That's a complete mis-read of what is going on.
NATO countries agreed in 2006 to spend 2% of their GDP on defense. Most have done a very poor job of doing that. Their defense spending lagged much worse before 2006, which is why they came up with the idea of a commitment. The US has not only maintained much higher defense/GDP levels, but also, for many decades, maintained about 300K troops in Europe. Following various defense drawdowns and force realignments, the present US level is about 100K. Either way, maintaining full-time troops levels in foreign lands is expensive. The upshot is that the US has carried the bulk of the costs to defend Europe. This has incentivized European nations to slack off, and this is what Trump is driving at. He hasn't said NATO is unimportant.
NATO has a website where anyone can find the details on spending and GDP levels. The Washington Post did a story today on the issue, though it covers spending going back only to 2014. Curiously, richer countries (e.g., Germany, UK) are particularly bad at meeting the commitment.
For more history on this, WAPO also has an interesting video of a meeting between Trump and NATO (Stoltenberg) in 2018, where Trump is critical not only of spending, but also of Germany for shuttering nuclear and coal electrical plants in favor of Russian gas. He thought it made no sense to depend on Russia for energy: czcams.com/video/Vpwkdmwui3k/video.htmlsi=R3cS4LdLl2wcvOi5

European countries don't get rorted by the "forever invoice" which American Defence companies practice heavily, thus far more efficient in their military spend ie: "get more bang for their bucks" and produce a better, more reliable product and are better soldiers than Americans and the British. No, no, no you yell - I suggest you read the history of WW2 European Theatre of War - they defeated the Germans by superior numbers + seriously superior number of equipment and supply lines. Plus there is the ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM - If you are close to Russia you are not going to base your military plans on a distant country - America. So, let Putin invade and let the world know
the USA won't back it's partners?
If Putin invades a NATO country
      then American boots are involved,
then it gets expensive for us.
      China is watching.

Not always a matter of dollars an cents. We should view the overall concept and what it means to security. Yes, countries may not be paying the fair share but what about the alternative? Do we really want Russia to continue to invade countries until eventually they start a conflict with one of our closer allies or with us?

Even 1% gdp spent on defence is enough to deter Russia.

1:00 "No dues here at NATO" Well that's actually perfect, let us then throttle our contributions' back significantly. Why does our government insist on flushing BILLIONS of dollars down the drain outside of our own country? We could simply go from (according to the chart) 3.47% and match that of Germany, who's at 1.57%.
