      They made a commander deck that cares about equipment but didn't put in Greaves or Boots? Equip 0 is one of the key ways for this commander to modify the tokens it makes, give them a counter so they stay modified, then equip other thing to keep distributing counters.

      They are still far lower than the average Commander Precons. Before 2018 they would put things like Grave Titan, Wurmcoil Engine, Mirari's Wake, and other at the time expensive reprints into the Precons. Now, they won't but they typically find solid niche cards that need reprints and put them in the Precons.
      Then came the 2018, which banked on the value coming from the new cards and it was a flop. Granted some of those cards are now somewhat expensive, but that also because Wizards won't reprint them so there's a limited number of them.
      Why Prof is going into value is because at various point the Commander Precon use to be cheaper, and the whole justification for raising the price was because they would put more value into the decks.

    The decklist they posted mentioned them coming with single copies of appropriate color *Ukiyo-e basic lands*, my deck (and best I can tell yours too) came with just regular basics (though the correct number of them at least, with the Ukiyo-e replaced by a regular basic). I don't personally care too much about said lands, but I think this is even more egregious than the Nissa thing, because the Ukiyo-e lands were actually advertised as being in while Nissa was not.

    I prefer the proxy commanders over the oversized cards, because of the all-too-common scenario where I accidentally shuffle my commander back into my deck after a game.
    However, I find that with my pre-cons I'm rarely using the featured commander, and instead one of the alternate ones. I would prefer getting proxies for the 2 or 3 suggested commanders, so I can ACTUALLY use them instead of hypothetically use them.

  • @JovialRoger
    @JovialRoger Před 2 lety +2

    I am honestly surprised to see you prefer the oversized cards, since usually I find our opinions and reasonings behind those opinions in complete agreement with my own. I love the board "proxy" commander cards and think they are an infinitely better option than the oversized cards for actual gameplay. They are the same width and height at as normal cards and can fit in most sleeves, so they take up no extra space on the battlefield compared to the normal commander card, at the same time they are nearly impossible to shuffle into your deck accidentally and easily identifiable even when in the same sleeve as the rest of your deck. The thickness of their cardboard makes foil curl a non issue, and their small size also allows use of the excellent new commander boxes that come with the decks and can hold your entire deck sleeved, admittedly only with certain sleeves (UltraPro is what I know works) and I would like WotC to add a couple of millimeters so it would fit DragonShield as well, but it is still much better than the old boxes. Personally I'd appreciate WotC providing the opportunity to get any cards printed like these commanders, at reasonable prices, but I'm sorry you aren't a fan of the new cards.

    Im actually fascinated by the stance. I appreciate the frick out of you prof. Lately I find your vids are heavily weighted to dollar value rather than weighted to playability.
    Not to discredit value the main purpose of an entry level deck is just that- you gain entry to the format.
    One of the greatest parts about our format is that it is constantly evolving and changing, therefore upgrading or rebranding decks is just part of the program.
    To me prof you’ve always been a guy who hasnt been concerned about the dollar value, always putting more weight into playability first.
    I understand the dichotomy, if you say they’re fine without cliff notes the pitchforks come out.
    I just notice a trend of your content slowly morphing into an investment package more so than a players package.
    All the decks you listed also need upgrades- and the point I feel is really lost here and where you’ve missed the mark is using your expertise as a tenured player and valued community member and content creator is to lead your charge.
    Tell us which deck fits which playstyle. Is this a deck that even you are interested in wielding because it fits your own style? Is it Timmy? Johnny? Spike? Vorthos? Or maybe another identity fits it better. Who is going to have fun playing this deck right out of the box, without upgrades? Most importantly, is it new player friendly, as a prerelease kit may be? Something to point me to where I can find upgrades- or maybe a ‘cheatsheet’ list of best possible upgrades I can get.
    Love your content always, especially when you get mad at Postie

    • @draketheduelist
      @draketheduelist Před 2 lety +1

      @@SSolemn Speaking as one who *can* afford that kind of ramp (no cEDH tier though), price is only half the problem.
      There's a reason my recent attempt to build a Syr Gwyn deck (Mardu Knights Equipment matters) ended with a loud curse and me building a Siona deck (Selesnya Enchantment Voltron) instead. A [Cultivate, Rampant Growth, Kodama's Reach, Harrow, Sakura Tribe Elder, Farseek, Diligent Farmhand...] package beats a [Wayfarer's Bauble, Mind Stone, Fractured Powerstone, Worn Powerstone, Fellwar Stone, Star Compass, Hedron Archive, Commander's Sphere, Thran Dynamo, Everflowing Chalice, Heraldic Banner, Gilded Lotus, Seal of the Guild Pact, Sword of the Animist, Talismans of Color, Signets of Color, Diamonds of Color, Myrs of Color, Lockets of Color...] package in every conceivable way. (And may God have mercy on your wallet if you run mono-black... my Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers combo ran me about $50. And don't get me started on Necropotence...) Green has so many good ways to ramp that are safer, better, and cheaper than the artifact route that you usually don't need much more than Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and possibly Solemn Simulacrum.
      I don't even _like_ Green. I just feel like I _need_ Green because the alternative is more expensive. (And if running Green, you _will_ run Beast Within. Why _wouldn't_ you?) And because non-Green ramp dies to an errant sneeze (which you may not have even provoked; maybe somebody put down a Dictate of Erebos or Panharmonicon and half your mana base just happened to be collateral damage), better run Blue and the Counterspell package (Counterspell, Negate, Disdainful Stroke, Arcane Denial, Disruption Protocol, season to taste...). So if you don't run Green, either become a control deck or lose to board wipes.
      That's why Mardu, with neither Green nor Blue, is such hell to build. Your ramp is strictly inferior _and_ you can't even protect it (let alone use Blue's exceptional draw suite) with counters. Enjoy spending most of the deck running permanent recursion, protection, and Flickertron instead of your commander's _actual_ strategy. And don't forget the panic button (Teferi's Protection)! If your wallet isn't crying, you will be crying when 90 of your 99 (or 52 of your 61 if you don't count lands) is just the same interchangeable package of removal, board wipes and card draw that _every_ deck in white, black or red runs. You know the names: Blasphemous Act. Chaos Warp. Chain Reaction. Magus of the Wheel. Terminate. Swords to Plowshares. Path to Exile. Generous Gift. Go For the Throat. Phyrexian Arena. Damnation. Winds of Abandon. Cleansing Nova. Faithless Looting. Esper Sentinel. Dockside Extortionist. And many, many more. Some are cheap, some are Dockside Extortionist, but they're all functional. Every card is a tried and tested meta staple. In fact, there's even been some white ramp joining the party in more recent years (Archaeomancer's Map, Smothering Tithe, Knight of the White Orchid...). But that portion of your deck has all been decided for you long before you started brewing, and it's all so generic that it's unlikely to mesh with your strategy, which makes deck building super boring...

    • @SSolemn
      @SSolemn Před 2 lety +1

      I run Dimir, Esper and Mardu decks, and also Bant, Jund and Simic decks, so I know what you mean... I am just angry that lands and Talismans are SO expensive, because they should be printed in a massive way to keep them available and cheap. Even then Nature's Lore, Farseek and Three Visits are not less than $3 each, so very much artifact like, the thing is the contract protecting lands. (In Mardu I always run Boros Charm, they should make some similar cards to protect the stones xD)
