In 1970 I worked in a Place called the coffee garden in Houston, at 6;30 am I saw a Man sitting alone, it was Red Skelton, My Mother Loved him so much and I went up to his table, and I told him that my Mother Loved him and it was her Birthday, He grabbed a Napkin and asked me her Name, I told him and he Wrote the most beautiful Happy Birthday Greetings to her. She lived in south Florida at the time, I sent it to her ASAP. She called me with tears in her Eyes and said it was the Most thoughtful thing anyone every gave to Her. Not only was Red Skelton a family-friendly, incredibly funny comic, but he was also amazingly multitalented. He composed over 60 full-length symphonies, as well as hundreds of songs. He was an accomplished multi-media artist who worked with pastels, oils, and sketches. Yet he was unpretentious, remaining humble and very generous. He was definitely one-of-a-kind.

Mr. Skeleton came to our town years ago and we laughed for 2 hours. Afterwards we sat a while to let the aisles clear some before leaving. Suddenly my wife pulled my are and pointed to a floor level door near the back of the stage. He was standing there alone just watching the people. We approached him and he eagerly greatest us, shook hands and signed our programs. We talked for a moment about our favorite characters. Suck a gentleman. So humble; no trace of star ego. Seemed genuinely pleased that we had come over to say how much we and our families always looked forward to his TV show. Still have the autograph. The only one I have ever asked for. Sure wish we had his kind of simple, clean humor today.

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. I grew up watching Red in the 60s. It's funny that everyone (including me) loved to see him laugh at hi own jokes. That is supposed to be kind of taboo for comedians to do. Most, though did it occasionally. Red did it cosistantly which actually made him unique. Thanks for the fun video.

Red Skelton is obviously the most beloved of all, by a long shot....and fortunately, we have already posted at least a dozen videos of America's Clown Prince, then and forever.

Happy to hear of your project. You couldn't go wrong with Mr. Skelton being included. A God fearing man he was and his entertainment reflected that. I'm so happy that his comedy will be preserved for future generations to see and appreciate once they come to their senses and get their minds out of the gutter. Then they will realize that there is true beauty out there. You just have to look for it. Thank you.

You will never know how much inspiration your comment gives us at Ima Sportsphile to continue with our daunting task....as it will take us 4 - 5 years to finish posting. And, although we have shared our ultimate goal with just a few people close to us, when we have completed posting the entire vintage library, our site will be donated to a charitable foundation called Ima Sportsphile Acadamies....and any person can become a member of our virtual museum for $5/mo. and be able to access all 2300 hours of content.....and ALL money will go to building homes for children who have none....and our kids will grow up learning life using the tenaments of sports as their foundation. Our kids will have the opportunity to learn based on their own choices of what they are interested in, as we will provide educational cirriculums for sports science, sports medicine, sports nutrition, sports management, etc......so, from you bottom of our hearts, your comment has and will play a part in making this dream come true....THANKS AGAIN.

You know some things just don't need to change to suit the times. Just because people's taste change doesn't always mean it is for the better. Red Skelton performed in a time where there were more restrictions on what he could and could not say on TV and yet he was still funny. His subject matter would have been limited and still he bring forth laughter. I sincerely doubt that his audience was limited to one race but everyone who saw him laughed back then and still do now.
I, too, grew up as a young child watching him on a black and white TV that had to be turned on five minutes before the show in order that it would be warmed up in time. His was one of the few shows for which my parents would make a bedtime exception. It was a real treat to be able to watch him. Sometimes the reminiscience was more about how everyone around you would laugh along with you and for that short time everyone could enjoy the same thing.
He often played a fool on stage but his depth of character was deeper than people gave him credit. He valued life and made every day profitable and wasted very few minutes.

In 1969 I came to America and lived in Indianapolis. Got a job and met a guy from Red's home town, met some old guys who knew Red as a young man.Said he acted crazy as a loon. I actually acted the same way said I reminded them of him.

When I was about 10 years old, he had Jane Mansfield on his show. When she came out, he gave a hug, and the sound effects man made this crunching noise. He stood back and said Oh no, "I've crushed them." Jane Mansfield almost crumpled to the floor, laughing. Then he reached inside his breast pocket and pulled out two cigars. My father had to explain to me what the actual joke was. We watched him all the time.

George W, thanks for your comment.....as it is so true....and the fact remains that I do not think we will ever see "true humor" in the likes of Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Johnaton Winters, George Burns, et al ever again....so, for this reason, I will continue to post my vast collection of vintage sports, comedy and music at www.imasportsphile.com .....cuz the world needs to know that there was a time when there was true humor without swearing.

Never missed his appearances on Johnny Carson, and was fortunate enough to have seen him perform at the Fischer Theater in Detroit in the early 1990's. Such a genuine talent and wonderful showman. I still am trying to obtain one of his original paintings (yes, he was an artist too)!
