Bad Medicine, You Give Love A Bad Name, Wanted Dead or Alive, It’s My Life, Bed of Roses, I’ll Be There For You- their catalogue is large (30 yrs). Can’t go wrong with any of these next. This is their very first hit before they became mega popular.
The reason that so many said back in the day "they suck" is because they are "chick rock". Corporate radio Top 40 glam rock with a poppy sound. Nickleback had the same shame cast their way when they got popular 15 years ago.
That said - they don't suck. Jon has always been a good voice/singer, and he writes amazing songs.
He's also a true humanitarian with a great story of loyalty family and love.
In short - he's one of the good ones that you never heard about getting in trouble.
Right on, and don't forget the jealousy factor, as well, as they crossed the line between pop and metal, and dragged half to 3/4 of the metal fans with them.🙂
This is their first song. Came out in 1984. The lead singer Jon is related to Frank Sinatra. I'm a huge fan of Bon Jovi. I can give you more Bon Jovi songs if you want any.
This is their best song in my opinion. I also love "Roulette" from this album.

This recording actually predates the band. Jon recorded it in 1982 with four session players. Tim Pierce, Hugh McDonald, Frankie LaRocka (RIP) and Roy Bittan (E Street Band).

I am one of those ppl who did not like later Bon Jovi, but I loved this song. That is the case with a lot of hair bands, their older material had something special that later tracks seemed to have lost, Ratt, Motley Crue just to name 2. If you like the theme of this, try The Angel Song by Great White. I know you like those guys a lot~!

A really kickass song. I dont agree that they suck. The Slippery When Wet tour in 1986 was great. Recommend the song -- Never Say Goodbye. Great ballad.
They suck from mid 90s. Only ballads and pop
Metal heads didn't consider them as "metal". "Pop Rock" was what most metal heads classified them as. However their song writing and popularity in my opinion is the real reason why "metal heads" slandered them so much. They were at one point the biggest band on the planet. Huge following, awards, stadium sold out all over the world. They were the epitome of hard rock in an era that had so many bands competing for spotlight, the lights that shone on Bon Jovi were so very very bright
This is probably the greatest rock / Glam band of all time. The only people that hate them are jealous. Period. You give Love a bad name is probably the best rock song of all time.
Wanted Dead or Alive is my jam. I was a Crue Head but I always enjoyed me some Bon Jovi and, as an adult, I like them much better.
At the time, Jon had bern working in a recording studio and had no official band. The song got airplay by a local DJ and thes song became a hit. Jon.has to pit together a band to promote the song and then create a video which lead to the recording of 7800 Degrees Farenheit with.the original line up of Sambora, Bryan, Torres and Such with Jon.
Back in the early mid-90s (1992 to 1994), I was into doing micro-electronics, and we made hearing aids and custom musician earpieces that they wore on stage. I actually made the earpieces for all of Bon Jovi band members. Ritchy and the rest of the band members were great to work with... then, dealing with John was a nightmare.
We sent John his earpiece, he would send it back with a new impression of his ear, complaining about it. We had to remake his earpiece at least 9 times. We were so confused and frustrated because everyone of them he hated and even though they were made to his ear.
We finally were so annoyed, that I sent him the very first one that we made for him, with out him knowing, and he loved it, and told me that if I would have made it that way the first time, this mess wouldn't have happened. Actually, the conversations between us were a lot more colorful. Never did tell him that it was the very first one that I sent, to him. Just glad that I didn't have to talk to him again.
Like a lot of his old music, don't like him as a person.
In the 90s I didn't think about Bon Jovi much (too busy listening to RUSH) but my wife wanted to see him and I was totally won over, he's a consummate showman and we had a blast. He's a really good person offstage too.
Unfortunately, there are always haters when a band hits as huge as they did.
They sort of rode the borderline between hard rock/soft rock. They kind of had their own style.
There is such a huge list of songs to choose from.
He owns restaurants in New Jersey where customers pay by donation. If you can afford he asks for $15 per meal.
Or you can help clean up or do dishes to pay for a meal.
If you can pay forward for another meal, so he can feed others that are homeless or can't afford food.
He helped out in his restaurants during Covid so they could keep feeding people.
Metalheads hate Bon Jovi because they are closer to mainstream/pop rock than hard rock. I myself can appreciate both genres.

The song that started it all. He had to work at a radio station just to get the DJ to play this. i mean Jon went thru quite a bit to start this band. hell, this song kinda blew up before the band was actually formed as we know it lol.

You have to listen to Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer”, “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Lay Your Hands On Me”. “Tokyo Road” is a pretty good one also.
I remember when this song when it was new and I just got my license. Turning up this song and going way too fast on a back road was amazing. It is also why I probably have cats and not kids because my mother said I would have one just like me.

Bon Jovi was the best. They were rock, not metal. Dry county is my favorite. Living on a prayer, never say goodbye, bad name, dead or alive, bad medicine, ill be there for you, bed of roses, always, have a nice day. They also have some great acoustic live versions of their best songs

They fit in the general category of 80s "hair metal" which metalheads objected to because this music was not metal. But people didn't know what else to call it and a lot of the bands tried to maintain "metal" images. It's really just Rock and Roll and it's awesome.

I went to a RATT concert once when the opening act was an unknown band from jersey called Bon Jovi singing their recent release called "Runaway". I kinda knew they were going to be huge because the girls went apeshit over them. Metal heads said they sucked, because they were glam rockers, girls liked them, so the music was more of a metal pop style.
Bon Jovi was, like, the biggest band in the world from 86 to 89ish. I can't exactly pinpoint it, but one of the singles from New Jersey was a sort of tipping point, and people were just done with them for a while. I think that's all, why some people pretend they were never fans or whatever.
I was one of those people that was like that, it's not because they were bad musicians, it was because I didn't feel they were metal, they were ballad rock like Journey but the media tried telling us they were metal.

Bon Jovi doesn't suck. The problem is Jon Bon Jovi, the leading vocalist, lost alot of his voice over the years. That's why people say they suck nowadays. But they are ROCK LEGENDS and their songs will be sang over the centuries.

From the same 1984 self-titled album as this is a song: "Shot Through The Heart" which has some wicked lyrics! It's easily confused by the casual fan with the 1986 song entitled "You Give Love A Bad Name" that uses the previous title as an opening lyric. "Roulette" is another good track from this album.

This is early in their career. It had more of a rock feel to it than when they went total pop on their third album. If you want to hear another good Bon Jovi song, check out In and Out of Love. It had a heavier edge than this one.
A greater song to start is by the songwriter of the year with over 10 number one hit that IA now recording his on material now. "HARDY" with " Wait In The Truck ".," A Rock", and a country/ rock try " The Mockingbird and The Crow" and a fun side of him try " Rednecker " and " Only Thing She Left was Me".

I've been a metalhead since 1977. My ipod has 11067 songs on it. Bon Jovi doesn't suck. They're nothing near top tier, but I like them. This song is a great choice. On that note, PLEASE check out UFO: Belladonna; and Born to Lose. Thanks!
Ahhh yes 80's interpretive dance lol. I think it was Bon Jovi's debut song at least it was the first song I heard of by them. Their second album "Slippery When Wet" had 3-4 hits after that.

Those bands and critics who hate Bon Jovi are just jealous. Bon Jovi always changed with the times. This is song from first album in 1984. Their 1986 album, Slippery When Wet put them on the map. Bon Jovi is credited as the first band doing MTV Unplugged. Screw the critics and the haters. And Jon Bon Jovi doesn't care if Republicans or Democrats want to use his songs.
P.S. Please do reaction videos for Jon Bon Jovi's solo album, Young Guns II; especially Santa Fe, Blaze of Glory and Bang A Drums. It shows Jon Bon Jovi's more spiritual side, while also providing the soundtrack for the movie Young Guns II. The song "Justice in The Barrel" shines, and it features some beautiful changing.

My personal opinion, I think Bon Jovi appealed more to women, kinda like Journey, their music wasn’t really kick @$$ hard rock like AC/DC, Def Leppard “pre-Hysteria”, Ratt, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, and so on, but I liked them.

People get stuck into a rut and only like certain types of music. I like Blues , Old reggae some big band / swing, Metal and Punk among others. All I can say is that I saw Bon Jovi open for Ratt and we left Because Ratt was so bad.
Tbh, when guys see other guys that are good looking, and play to the women, and are popular, they will say they suck. Deep down they know their music is good. The other thing bands like Bon Jovi’s music isn’t heavy or hard core enough, and they’re too clean. They want bad boys like Motley Crue & G&R, or hard core like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera, and so forth. They feel more of a connection with them. As for myself, I don’t judge bands like that. I like all these bands I just mentioned, including Bon Jovi. You’re the same when it comes to judging music, just like me. We’re not prejudice with rock bands and singers, we’re sophisticated listeners.

This was before I'd ever heard of them, so this song is esoteric. I liked the song Let It Rock, because of the intro organ sounded like church or a temple. Reading your fans, yeah, Wild In the Streets was a great song. Wonderful. Wanted Dead or Alive is an all time great song and an instant classic. It reminds you of the cowboy or like Wolverine in the outback.

The reason people say Bon Jovi sucks is because they changed their style. Their first two albums were great could fall into the late stage hair band . Their third album was kind of pop rock then after that it was like ok they've turned into a band that the girls love but the guys won't listen to because it was way to pop lost its rock edge.

Bon Jovi doesn't suck. They're a talented group. They started out as rockers, but then got caught up playing too many crappy love songs.
Fun Fact: None of his band members recorded this song. Bon Jovi recorded this song (and I believe his first album) with a ragtag group of musicians before he formed his band.

Some people like to jump on the "they suck" bandwagon trying to sound cool because it's not their favorite band getting the fame. Radio airplay and record sales would indicate that there are far more people who say they don't suck!

Yes , I agree that their crossover popularity to mainstream got them disliked. I'm not their biggest fan , but the line from You Give Love a Bad Name "A school boy's dream, you act so shy, your very first kiss was your first kiss goodbye" , is truly one of the best lines in rock! Kudos John.
This is their 1st album - this is their best work, they just got worse from there. The best song on this album is 'Roulette' - you'd really like it I think.
