Fiordland

- This was a trip of a lifetime for me, gaining a ballot for sole access to fish a remote beat of water in Fiordland at the bottom of New Zealand 🇳🇿, a couple of hours drive from Queenstown.
Access was via a boat ride from Te Anau downs followed by a few hours hike before setting up camp 🛥️🏕️🗻🌄.
The scenery was absolutely outstanding 🌅⛰️, water super clear, and I was surrounded by birds and nature with not a single person around!
However with the river so clear and littered with beech logs from the many floods in this area, it felt like the fish were going to be tough to get to the net (I later found out there had been a couple of big groups in back to back right before me, so the fish had seen their fair share of action right before me 😒).
I was equipped with a new rod after breaking my old rod in the earlier Queenstown adventure 😭 - this turned out to have a bit of a tapu (Maori for sacred/cursed) as you will soon find out... Looking back at some of the clips I think my casting was a little off point at times too, as I adjusted from my usual 6wt to the new 5wt, doh 🙄.
😍 I feel really humbled to be able to have adventured in such a special place, and proud to be a custodian of New Zealand's beautiful environment. This place was off the charts scenic, epic, and untouched.
If I did it again, perhaps I'd have stepped up from the 5lb tippet too - I think after seeing some of the first fish I targeted being so selective I read this as fish seeing the tippet, but knowing now there were groups before me, perhaps it was rather that they had seen a few anglers right before me, hmmm - anyway so with my call to run 5lb tippet I ended up hooking 7 in all, but breaking off with snags - this cost me 2 lovely 5lb+ browns 😭 such as life it was an outstanding adventure and I feel so priveledged to have been able to check out this spectacular part of the world!

Amazing video
Beautiful country! Thanks for the bird and birdsong ID.
Thanks for watching. Next week I have a video coming out with what I think was actually the best birdsong I've heard! Hope you can check it out
What an amazing experience. This is paradise! Thanks for sharing this with us.
So happy to share this special spot with you!
Stunning place, awesome experience,

Epic dude
Thanks!
Great video, stunning place!
Yes this is pretty much untouched wilderness, superb!
Can imagine how hard it was. Excellent footage 👏 👌 👍
Gotta smile though, such an epic location!
@@nzadventurer absolutely, otherwise no point to be out there
I love the South Island Robin. Very special to listen to.
So cute and so cheerful right
Awesome vid!
Thanks!
That's awesome video

Awesome. I feel like you can drink thr water it’s so clear. Glad to see you are enjoying the break in godzone. Richard R
Thanks Rich yes this spot is absolutely pristine!
Wow! What a place ! Awesome video! Trout are only the icing on what’s a very epic cake, keep the videos coming mate well done !
Cheers Bruce, yep outstanding spot!
OMG! Bring back memories. Fished the same river and stayed at the same campingspot back in 2013 which was a really good cicada year over in NZ. Had 5 amazing days there. Did some night fishing in the deeper pool just outside the camp site:)
Oh superb! So happy this helped you re live that experience! That's awesome. Did you get any big fish or mostly 1-2lb? My biggest was 3 d 4lb so it seemed the spawning run is needed to get a visit from the larger fish
@@nzadventurer not any big. Most fish was around 1-2,5kg but epic fish! As i said it was a hood cicada year so they were not too spooky and was feedibg as crazy🔥
@@Pontuspalsson brilliant! It makes for an exciting day when fish are eating from the surface in a frenzy! Again I'm pleased to have helped you with that memory! All the best mate
Wow that scenery and water is amazing. Gotta catch a fish though bro…
Bit of salt in the wounds! Yeah painful to lose so many fish!
Nice. But the sandflies would do my head in. I get a strong allergic reaction to them.
Ha ha yeah I hear that. Some of the guys wear a mesh hood! Another way to keep them at bay is to have a flock of weka (birds) following close nearby 😂
Wonderful video. I just love the way you bring all the aspects of the adventure to life.
I love the fact that you can talk and narate in a window at the same time the video is running. Could you please advise what softawre you use for this feature. Appreciated. Geoff
Thanks for that feedback - perhaps I should use that editing style more in the future 👍 thanks for watching mate
I have run into the same problem here in western Canada on slow moving gin clear water. No takes, which is why I prefer to fish in a bit of a ripple. In a ripple the fish don’t seem as finicky and strike at anything.
You're right on that. I'm always learning that's for sure. Reflecting on that trip my tippet was too light I should've fished riffle water with 6lb as the 4lb only lost me fish
Beaut place bud i grew up in manapouri sum big fish bout
Oh wow, what a place to grow up! I'd love to get my boat there and camp out on the boat and adventure up a few more valleys! Epic!
Do you have to have special fishing license for this place ??
Yes you need to apply for a ballot with the fish and game website and this controls only one group at a time on the river beat
God had to send little black flies to the South Island because all good souls would choose places in the video as a stay in Heaven for eternal rest
🤣
Skill factor not there. Stunning
A few more lessons and a lot more practice needed - will keep learning and enjoying
@@nzadventurer those crystal clear waters and big learned trout would not make it easy. Such a stunning location. Fish are a bonus
@@jac2384 always loving an adventure plus fly fishing is life long learning if it was easy I probably wouldn't be addicted to it 😊 my channel isn't about trying to show off being rhe beat at it - it's about allowing folk at home to get a glimpse into some of the amazing adventures available in nz as not everyone has time, wellbeing or fitness to be out there adventuring. Cheers for the comments and hope you can check out a few other vids I post 🗻
