In my literary analysis class, we had to write critical analysis papers using the lens of various critical theories. This was very hard for me because I didn't agree with any of the theories, so my papers felt like lies. Needless to say, I got a c in that class and developed a distain for critical theories.

Amazing to see even collegiate level students struggling with writing a thesis statement. I found using the phrase "main claim" and ""sub claims" can be a nice way to break it down for students.

As far as verb tenses go, I’d suggest you try to stay consistent. If you are telling a story in the past, try to avoid switching to present tense. Good luck!

I have to write 9-10 pages of anything and I chose a lit review but I'm not sure if I can argue and prove a point when looking at the literature of others? Is it okay to articulate my opinion and bring my own examples?
@@sarahha6523 Literature reviews are a little bit different. In general, they are intended to review what the literature says as a whole and when synthesized with each other. It may be relevant (check with your teacher) to add analysis, but they are not persuasive. That's a different kind of paper. Make sure you are following your teacher's guidelines, but the basic critical analysis structure can be used just about anywhere. You just want to use analysis rather than persuasion. Support everything you say with the understanding that you're job is to present information, not persuade anything. Good luck!

The difference between essay types is not clear and it becomes difficult to find the distinction. I am upgrading and to write a second critical analysis I still don’t understand how it differs. I understand the terms, but the content of what my essay needs to contain is so lost to me.
Essays don’t have objective rules. Each teacher may expect something different. If possible, I’d recommend asking your teacher for clarification on their expectations. Generally speaking, a critical analysis requires looking for insights into the text, reading deeply, and using examples to explain your analysis. Some teachers may want something more specific though. Only they can clarify what.

Very quick question, a Critical Analysis essay, are you allowed to agree with the other writer? Or do you have to dislike it.
You can absolutely agree. The point is that you analyze the work-not that you disagree with it. If you analyze it and it’s good, then agree. If it’s bad, then disagree. Either way, you need to be able to explain why.
My uni has set a portfolio which includes 2 critical analysis’ limited to 500 words a piece. The first is one my lecturer set and the second is one we found ourselves with 3 posting a alternative argument which is relevant to the source material or similar my issue is is it possible to be clear, concise and still build a good argument with only 500 words and about 4 different scientific articles? We are a foundation year so this is all pretty daunting and has me slightly panicked what would be the best way you could advise to approach this that wasn’t mentioned in the video?
+dozeyfreak14 It’s not a lot of space to work. I’d suggest making sure every word counts. Summarize sources quickly, bring up effective examples, and make sure to bring up relevant insight. Good luck!

Well the problem I have is that my teacher is asking for a psychological criticism essay on a short story by Edgar Allen poe. Which makes no sense whatsoever if this is the definition of a critical analysis essay
Like many academic You Tubers you address this 'critical analysis essay' challenge with broad generalisations. It is not surprising that many of the student comments below show that this method of explanation does not work. After 40 years of teaching literature at an old English university I have found it can ONLY be taught be showing students 'worked examples' of essays, written on real texts. If you were to take a familiar poem and go through the 'process' of analysis and essay-composition your students would have a much better chance of understanding what you are trying to teach them. A picture says more than a thousand words. And a 'worked example' of a skill - a demonstration, in fact - is worth more than a thousand words of untethered generalisations. @@rwc A very reasonable question, if I may say so! I have not made videos because I have a speech impediment which would make me sound very odd in a video. I manage in class and in small group events : students get used to my quirks. So I do not make teaching videos. I suggest teachers should simply set themselves a critical assessment task, talk the class through the thinking and research process - and then give them the essay the teacher has written. I find that after the second teacher-led demonstration everyone gets the message and starts to produce good work. The best students produce excellent work. (BTW I make the same recommendation to teachers of other Humanities subjects where essay-writing is important.)
@@brianh5075 I developed a stutter after I started teaching about 12 years ago. It usually doesn't show up during a lesson, fortunately. I agree that examples are a great way to teach. As I add more videos, I can focus on that as well. I appreciate your suggestions.

+Kardash Znavourek That’s more complicated than simply analyzing an essay. Writing about literary theory takes practice. In short, theories are like perspectives to look at writing with. Make sure you understand the theory and then apply that perspective to the text in question.

+Thushee fer This video should explain it. How you analyze a text doesn’t change that much from source to source. The basics are the same. You read the text carefully and discuss what insights you have. Don’t say “I think” or “I feel” or “I believe.” Don’t Terence yourself at all. Just state your observations as facts and back then up with explanations from the text and outside sources. This works for journal articles as well as other kinds of sources. As part of your critique, you may focus on the author’s purpose and how well he or she accomplished their purpose.

If it’s a paper for school, you probably don’t need a subheading. That’s more common for published papers. I’d suggest a title that describes what the paper is about. Then use “Title Case” for capitalization.

You can. The most important thing is to explain your reasoning. You don’t have to have someone else agree with you, but you should always explain why with examples and evidence.

+Orlando Chin It depends on what kind of essay you’re being asked to write. In general, I’d say look at both sides of the issue or topic you’re writing about, find a clear way to express your main idea as a thesis, find good examples from sources to support your main idea, and do your best to present everything in a clear and original way free from mistakes.

With a paper that long, my students typically use about 10 sources. I’d find sources then decide my thesis. From there, it’s all about supporting the thesis with your sources.

+Deepali Ramnani Your teacher would have to tel you if there is a specific format he or she wants, but I’d suggest starting with a summary of the text, then have a detailed explanation of the text including your analysis, then close with a summary of your thoughts.
