Hummingbirds: Jewelled Messengers - Go Wild

- Rockport, Texas is being invaded: 14 million Ruby-throated hummingbirds fly into this suburb of Corpus Christi in a period of 48 hours. They are about to undertake the most remarkable journey, flying non-stop over 1,000 kilometres across the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The trip will take 25 hours without a possibility to pause.
By the time they arrive in Rockport, the tiny birds weigh only 4 grams. That is dangerously little: they do not have enough fat to fuel the flight. For this, they need to weigh 6 grams - so they have to add half their body weight very quickly. The local people put up feeders around which hundreds of hummingbirds swarm. They feed and put on weight, ready for this critical and dangerous stage of their migration. After bing-eating, the birds set off. The local coastguard and military can now track the hummingbirds as they fly across the sea by radar.
This film reveals the remarkable lives of hummingbirds - one of nature’s most fabulous creatures. Everything about them is superb and extreme: highest metabolism, fastest heart beat and most rapid wing beat. This remarkable specialisation has been driven by flowering plants. Everything about hummingbirds has been shaped by this association - and in that relationship the plants provide and the birds work in their service.
The hummingbirds are the plants’ messengers - the key pollinators for 60% of the New World tropical plants. They pollinate plants in extreme climates where insects are unable to fly - like in the high Andean mountains of South America.
The reward for the hummingbirds is a kind of ‘rocket fuel’: the plants’ super high-calorie, sugar-rich nectar. But to obtain their high-energy fuel the birds have to expend huge amounts of energy - most obviously in hovering flight.
Of all the birds, only hummingbirds can hover for any length of time. And more than this, hummingbirds can fly backwards and even, just occasionally, upside down.
In other birds, the power is created in the outstretched down stroke of the wings; and then the wings are folded and lifted back to the start position for another power stroke. In hummingbirds, when they hover, both wing strokes create power and lift.
This film combines scientific revelation with astounding photography, capturing some of nature’s most remarkable and loved creatures. A wonderful visual tour-de-force - it uses ultra high-speed HD cameras and cutting-edge remote systems to enter the fascinating world of hummingbirds.
I smiled the whole time I was watching this video 😊. Hummingbirds bring me peace and happiness. Such a blessing for all of us! ❤
They automatically make me smile, too! They are so beautiful! We have the ruby throated hummingbirds here in northern Michigan. I wasn’t sure there would be any around our vacation home, but the other day one popped up in the window, as if to say “hey! We’re here! Where is the food?” Because the only thing blooming now are dandelions😂. I have some new glasses that are very colorful bows on them white with a lot of purple, orange, red, blue and green. They’re obviously attracted to these, as twice now within three days, I’ve had them come right to the side of my head and look at them to check them out! I love it❤😂😊
I totally agree! My heart leaps with joy as I witness their flight, their feeding, their rest and rejuvenation! I loved hearing about their adaptation over time, such a miracle! Thank you seems hardly enough to these patient, persevering people who spend their lives studying and photographing the humming birds.
In native totem they stand for joy.💖🌴🌸🥰
@@littledabwilldoya9717that is so awesome because when animals and birds come close that is a wonderful sign and they have much to teach. When you research in the Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams most of the meaning will pertain to your life presently. Interesting💖
That robotic hummingbird is really not necessary. Man and tech always got to try and outdo nature. Messing with nature and messing nature up is tech industry's agenda. They mess up PLENTY
Nobody makes nature more compelling than Sir David Attenborough. I would like to have a library of all the films he produced
I would love to meet him and talk story about the environment and much more. He has seen much and so certainly can shed light on the misery that this planet is experiencing💖 aloha David
He is lovely isn't he?
You and me ,both!
David Attenborough is a lovely man and the best narrator!
Lovely to hear Sir David Attenborough narrating this amazing video, thank you.
Say what you will, I sing the praises of my Creator and the beauty of His creation. I see Him in the magnifacens of these delicate creatures.🙏
They’re amazing. So are box turtles.
What I will say, is that I think about God every time I witness the miracle of a Hummingbird :) ✝ Could a human being even dream up anything as fantastical as a Hummingbird ?
No proof he exists. Sorry hun, maybe put down the man-made fabels and pick up a physics book.
@@Firebolt68 Well, you can probably guess what I'm going to do for you :)
*My Ruby-throat's are making their 4500km journey back to Canada for spring time...amazing little creatures*
I live on the South Carolina coast. We have a hummingbird feeder hanging on our deck. I love watching the Green and Ruby Throated hummingbirds come to feed. They are the most adorable little birds on the planet. I think they realize that there is glass between them and our cats, who watch them intently. I watched one little Green Hummingbird come to the door to the deck and fly all around the cat. It nearly lost its mind. It repeatedly jumped at the glass trying to get it. If Hummingbirds could laugh, I bet that would have been laughing its head off.
I felt very special in a garden when staying next to it flower bush, you know those orange trumpet Beauty of nature bushes, wear a hummingbird came right next to me looked me right in the face to check me out and then proceeded after I smiled too it just began going from flower to flower right there! I felt special.😗😏🤗🙃😉😇😊
I used to work in a hardware store and one day a Hummingbird was kind of stuck inside and after flying around for awhile I realized that if I didn't do something it could end up dying because they have to eat and /or drink so much everyday because of how much energy they use. so he was flying along the back wall so I went and got a ladder and I opened up a bottle of our Hummingbird food and I squirted some of it in my hand and I just hung my hand up there like a dish and sure enough it landed on my hand and started eating. and that's when I tried to slowly back down off the ladder and I was trying to gently and carefully walk it to the back door so that I could let it out of the store. and right as I got to the back door, it flew off my hand and I was back in it trying to figure out how to get him out again. not long after this I finally did get it to get go out so hopefully it was OK after that
What you just shared, may help others do the same type of rescue, and continue to help our important and amazing feathered pollinators make our world beautiful in so many ways. All the birds need our help in today's world. As an older mostly retired wildlife rescue volunteers, You're my hero. Thanks so much for sharing the story. Loved it! J.
Bless you, kind soul, for helping the hummer.
Its very hard to get the birds we feed not to fear us. Without their fear they wouldn't survive very long. I've rescued many, (always put babies back in their nests )I grow catnip and give plants to neighbors. this year the Goldfinches have arrived to eat the seeds. The bright yellow feathers with black feathers on their wings are very beautiful to watch. The catnip also deters mosquitoes, it drops seeds and it grows anywhere it has enough moisture to sprout, and the strictly indoor cats I've rescued love it. A neighbor's cat stopped by yesterday to have a little snack from the plant, then started to act silly and roll around on the ground before eating more catnip, then went home, I guess to nap. Pass this on, catnip helps the bees who pollinate food plants in our gardens, they go back and forth and we need every bee we can save, with the way our planet is going. If you grow it, its a gŕeat perennial, just cut back dead branches in late fall, it re-grows every year. I love it.. J.
They are good judges of character.
I like how the hummingbirds, along with some other birds and animals as well, can flap their wings yet at the same time they keep their heads perfectly still and not vibrating so that they can still see things as if they were just sitting still
❣️
What magnificient Birds that GOD created!
Great job capturing the gorgeous Hummingbirds in their environment. Absolute joy to see and watch them all!
Years ago when I put out my first hummingbird feeder, it became very clear that they would fight one another for access. So, now I put out four feeders every season and they drain them all every week. They are so delightful! We love watching them, especially when they perch on the feeder and we can get a better look at them.
Thank you to the entire team who put this remarkable and stunning documentary together. Every frame is breathtaking. And a huge thank you to Sir Davd❤
In gratitude, you and the whole team are part of the miracle to those of us who are handicapped. You are gift beyond measure!
Beautiful birds and masterful photographers !!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I love hummingbirds! I got my first feeder last year, and they brought me joy and intrigue every single day. And the tiny ones, just learning...incredible to watch. They are also very in tune to the presence of humans, and are pretty shy at first.
The numbers around these birds are truly staggering, heartbeat, 400 beats per minute, need to feed every 15 mins, ect ect. They must be utterly exhausted all the time!
This has got to be the most amazing and beautiful Doc I have ever seen.
Thank you Sir David Attenborough for narrating this amazing documentary. Still love your narration even at this age. May you live longer❤❤❤❤. Huge respect to you sir🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Fierce and bright
Beautiful Hummingbirds
This documentary was wonderful
To the ppl of Rockport TX, you guys are saints! This has been added to my bucket lists of things to do.
It’s amazing that we can see adaptations and changes when we have no proof. Hummingbirds have always been the way they were made.
The early hummingbirds. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)
Good job, Kodiakbear!
Hi Kodiakbear! I had a right hemispheric stroke leaving my left side paralyzed, so I type hunt and peck. I learn a lot from these PBS programs!
@@karensertich8904 Hello

Hummers are so fearless they make loud calls and perch high up in the trees and bushes.

The beautiful colored Hummingbirds reach the outer limits of brilliant color possibilities in Nature. These little Wonders seem to ignore the limits of the bird world with their ability to hover like a helicopter or a Bee and then lower their heart beat at knight to save energy.
Beautiful Messenger of Plants .
A Perfect Example of

Hummingbirds are remarkable in every way. I have read that they can flap their wings 236 times a minute!
Second not minutes
According to the video 80 times/second = 4800 times/minute

Humming bird is amazing bird and beautifully bird
These birds have stunning colors 🙂🌺
Thank you for this video, first-off. Secondly, I feel very much like we humans have taken on a path in our evolution very much akin to these birds. We are (at least many many of us) dancing that delicate dance of too much energy and just enough to get by. Thanks for coming to my TED talk: sincerely, underpaid custodian.
Favorite creature 😊
Oh my goodness, I loved the dance. Whoever put music to that part was genius 🥰
sO.. CUTE & sO.. SWEET.. nice documentation 👍👍

That was beautiful
Every time I listen to this, I just imagine myself laying alone in an empty grass field looking up into the sky and seeing stars and the moon shining back at me. It’s truly amazing and calming. Silence, happiness, calmness, and just relaxation. ❤

Absolutely, beautifully fascinating.. thank you
Excellent documentary, but perhaps you forgot to mention the Cuban hummingbird: "The Pájaro Mosca", translated to English "The Fly Bird", referring to its size. Really small.
Cheers. Love your documentaries especially narrated by my hero naturalist David Attenborough. God gives you, Dave, great health and long life.
❤💖💕💔❤️💖💕
Wonderful seeing this kind of bird.
Sou uma admiradora desses pequeninos e agradecida a Deus, por nos agraciar com esse maravilhoso mundo!! É uma riqueza, um valor incalculável.

Hummingbird birds and are a favorite of mine
I enjoy the narrator he's calm and doesn't talk too much
I used to see them growing up in Tennessee. They were so majestic and rare to see. You can hear them when they come around hovering and humming (And very small)
The video LIES. I live in SOUTH AFRICA. We have humming birds here Attenborough say they're only in the new world (Americans), UNTRUE!!!
@@RourkeJSpliffmaybe you are thinking of sunbirds. Google both to see the difference.
@@RourkeJSpliff Yeah they are definitely everywhere throughout the world. They are just more colorful in South America.
BEAUTIFUL.. !!☝🔝👍
great Doc
My favorite narrator 👍💝
Amazing creations.
Messengers indeed 🤗💭🌌 All of the birds lol 🕊️🦚
They think they're bad asses. We keep feeders in our garden and they will come to peck you on the head if you're not watching. It's cute how they think they are so scary.
Thats adorable, they are adorable.
What an exquisite video❤❣️
Very informative and inspiring.
Hummingbirds "Swim through the Air"! They are such special morsels of this Quantum Divine Creation. 💐
