I love this historic footage of old Monterey. If you walk down to the beach, feel the salt spray from the waves and hear the gulls, there is a healing quality & a sense of connection with nature that continues to bring people to visit.
Who else lives in the bay area and just loves the history of where they live
me, I don't exactly live in monterey but I do live near the area
I'm consumed by it. It beats any garbage on TV
The homeless guy sleeping on my porch shooting up loves it as well
✋️
Sets the context for John Steinbeck’s “Sweet Thursday” the sequel to “Cannery Row”
Thanks for posting, my great grandfather was one of Portuguese fishermen on the bay for a long time.Unfortunately later he drowned after years on that bay. I found it interesting and odd that the wharf was built by prisoners.I will say every time I come back to visit I love that fact that the wharf has sample clam chowder outside every restaurant. At the end of this there's a snap of a shot of Del Monte Beach if I miss anything it's that beach to run on.
Hi Stephanie, my grandparents (from Spain) lived on 2nd & Ocean and as kids we ran all over the place, to the beach, Dennis the Menace Park. Do you remember Qualia's Market on 8th Street and the old Oak Grove school?
My hometown. I miss it so..................
Me, too.
Commercial fishing is a difficult life. Much respect to all the men who helped build this place out of such a rough industry.
The good old days, before the introduction of plastic trash, plastic signs, shopping malls, crazy consumerism based on junk no one really needs.
It's still beautiful no matter what
@@macias7125 Don't settle for less. The makers of unnecessary consumer goods depend on low standards to continue their high profit ratio. Same with the plastics industry. They are create so much of the trash that ruins our cities and oceans.
Incroyable on voit mon grand père que je n'ai pas connu, je regarde cette vidéo venir boucle avec AMOUR♥️🙏
That is not the Casa de Oro. That is the Pacific House. The Casa de Oro is behind the Pacific House.
It is the law of Waters that separate us all not the lands. That why objects were created for travel to other lands Now.
Fish taste so good.
I believe Fremont's house is now a wonderful French bakery.
California was part of Mexico before the waters, were departed and the land restored.
So it was named after Spain? 😬
Monterey was named by Sebastian Vizcaino after the current viceroy of New Spain, Count Monte Rey.
They were laughing and dancing through wars? 🤔
They were living life and doing without, making the best of things. A huge immigrant community.
Great video! Of course, if it was real "old Monterey" it would have been nothing but Indian villages.
@doright man Way to be an asshole.
I grew up on Via Descanso. There is one street named Via Cimarron, which is Spanish for "wild [ones]." It is what they called Indians. I always thought maybe it was where runaways from the Mission hung out, or something like that. Does anybody know?
@@romielnagar1062 No, if they ran away from the missions, they had to run FAR away--usually over to the Sierras, sometimes down to Indian Canyon.
One time on cannery row I accidentally almost stole a big gummy bear.
Mella!
Nothing about the 163 Mexicans lynched from 1848-1850
Can u please provide some additional background or where to find this info. I'm interested in learning more. Thank you.
I was born in Monterey county
and I’ve never even heard of this
Probably that many Mexicans have been killed in the past two years in Monterey County.
What's your point?
Mexico, Spain and America (not to mention the pirate Bouchard) all fought for control over Monterey. Plenty of people were killed here. Your woke outrage doesn’t really work in this context, find something else to complain about.
Lol, the old west, you mean 🇲🇽 Mexico
lol sore loser much?
Nothing about the Native Americans Who first existed there
I guess the narrator didn't go to the Native American's library.
they left out a lot. Mexican rule and later American rule. Good documentary.
It's only 12 minutes long!
What were you expecting?
Natives weren’t big on record keeping, their efforts were focused on scalping and drinking firewater.
Stop killing fish!!!
Judith Shipstad no
no
You posted this comment 8 years ago. The answer is still no.
Aberdeen had no choice but to honour Kurt Cobain because they wouldbe screwed. Monterey will never honour me. My family came to Monterey in 1770. They came over on the galleons with gaspar de portola and Father serra.
This is gringo story telling , history. Where are the stories of spain and mexico ?
they lost
The Spanish and Mexicans were terrible record keepers.
If you actually pay attention he is talking about the Spanish history here. Nobody respects woke Mexicans whining about losing control of their territory hundreds of years ago, talk about sore losers 😂
They didn’t mention slavery and genocide
Of the natives and californios.
dr smith paged to bobbies bar
Wow very woke, praise the lord we have such morally righteous people to lob complaints at historical documents. We just wouldn’t know otherwise…
@Qu££rludeEsputo831 save it for the cross burning
