Should YOU Play Enclave? (Full Review)

  • This is the pilot episode of my new game review series. Will there be other episodes? Only your feedback can make the difference. Either way, now I can finally delete the 100GB or so of Enclave footage from my computer that's been sitting here for a year and a half.
    Extra Notes:
After watching my footage over, I realized that you actually can't pick the dark campaign until you beat the light campaign, thus ruining me telling you to play the dark campaign first, and ruining the game's marketing of "Pick your side." It's actually more like "Play as the good guys, THEN pick your side." I also think that I was maybe just a little bit too harsh on the visuals of the light campaign's levels. Don't get me wrong, the dark campaign's levels are still a lot better than that of the light campaign, but take my complaints with a grain of salt. I have fairly high standards for the fantasy genre.

I played this game when it first came out and started thinking about it again this week for some reason. It took me FOREVER to remember what it was called and I had to literally scan a list of all action RPGs ever made to track it down. I have to say that, after hunting it down, I am thrilled to see such a modern high quality in-depth video to take me back and help me fully recall what I liked about this game. I feel lucky that you chose to make it.

Exactly the same here. Just thought about this game I played 20 years ago, but couldn't remember the title and had to scour the internet for "early 2000s action rpgs".
Right now it's not as great as I remembered it. But I was a sucker for Gothic and Diablo-like aesthetic back then, and Enclave was perfect for that. Obviously not as good as other rpgs from that era which had a proper story. But I hoped it got some good remaster or a sequel after 20 years. It had a potential for a great sequel if they just got more creative writers and level designers.

@@ElGalloUltimo oh my god bruh, Are you me? I remember this game vaguely after decades but for some reason I can't remember its name as well then I went through finding and digging on this until I found it on a list of games around early 2000s. There was an itch in me that I can't scratch until I find the name of this game.
The only thing that I remember in this game that it was a 3rd person combat game and if you stray away from the mission borders, you will fail the level

I have a bunch of physical editions of this (some are even brand new & sealed after 20 years!), and I've been playing it since 2008, I think. I absolutely agree on your remaster point. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is...well...a remake. Dead Space, Tony Hawk 1+2, or Shadow of the Colossus are kick-ass remasters, not a remakes (in the case of Dead Space predominantly. The rest are largely "re-ports".

Learned about the remaster from your video, and checked out the trailer... tbh I haven't noticed any differences from the PC version. It seems like the exact same game lmao. I wonder how did they manage to do this though, considering that the source code was supposedly lost.
Also you can blame TopWare for the "adware" thingy. Not sure how did they got the IP on their hands (they're definitely NOT the original devs, I can tell you that), but I certainly don't remember having something like that on my physical copy.

Yeah, other than the expanded soundtrack, it looks like the only change they made was allowing the HUD to scale with the resolution. As you can see in my vid, the it's tiny on the PC version. Doesn't look particularly HD other than that, might just be a re-port.

17:48 Blade of Darkness released one year before Enclave has fully model accurate, dynamic hitboxes that change with the animations, even more accurate than most modern games if not all. If you record footage of the game, and slow it down, you will notice it. So when you make a slash with your sword, at the exact moment it connects with someone's head, it will deal damage and also decapitate that head at the exact moment of impact if it's a killing blow. You can even see your hitbox arc as it leaves a trail whenever you attack like in Enclave but more readable.

I remember playin this as a kid on my toaster of a pc. It was stupidly easy to playthrough at 8fps. For some reason, you're nigh untouchable under those conditions, and your weapon seems to hit multiple times. I started with the Dark campaign because i tend to favor the evil sides. You see good guys in 90% of games so its usually a breath of fresh air to be bad for a while

Since orcs are an invention of Tolkien and orc is synonymous with goblins in the Tolkien universe, I'd give games and stories like these a pass when it comes to short orcs. And historically speaking, medieval countries had been using gunpowder weapons for hundreds of years when swords and bows were still dominant weapons. So the cannons and bombs are a nice element to a genre that over uses magic. 😅

    - 2:08 On my current PC pirated version, i was forced to play Light side first - didnt let me to choose Dark side at all. I think having to use arrow keys is kinda fun, takes you back when people were so limited with these options.
    - 3:53 Bows and crossbows useless? I only played huntress on the light side lol as with melee, you need to be more precises with your attacks considering the bad hitboxes.
Huntress also shoots faster somehow if i remember correctly. On Dark side, i only used mages - so OP
    - 9:20 Lmao didnt know crouching helps with goblins
    - 10:10 Strange the skeletons didnt attack you in the crypt - they attacked me once I stole the treasure.
    - 14:20 I personally found the villages and towns very comfy
    - 19:14 Didnt know you lose gold once you get rekt lol
    - 20:40 Music: I played the demo a lot as a kid since there wasnt anything else we could have at the time (which means we replayed the Divided City and Ark Moor over and over again). Also the composer was said to be a woman in another video, but now Im not sure who to believe. Thanks for the bonus track i never got to hear ♥
-Random opinion but I love the main menu with the random raven - especially when you enter the map I mean whats a raven doing with a sextant nailed on their head? Weird but uniquely good!
    - 23:35 As a mage, I had issues dealing with archers, because of multiple arrows. They didnt get me, but it was a fun challenge.
    - 24:00 Romans are a weird addition to this game, but who doesnt love their aesthetics.
    - 24:30 Manual? What manual? lmfao. But y, this made me want to mention Gothic (1,2, Night of the Raven) as in that game you DO NOT get any instructions at all in game, no tutorial, nothing. Kinda makes it that more immersive I suppose. Maybe theres a helpful game manual i never bothered to check
    - 25:06 I never used daggers as i preferred to quickly changed between staffs or bows/crossbows
    - 25:35 People comparing any game to dark souls these days, it just became a meem. Idk if its hard like dark souls as ive only played DS once or twice for a very short while, but this game isnt hard at all. Super fun but waaay too short. (At this point, I wonder if you realize you can do another attack with mages: Hold RMB and whilst holding it press LMB for high aoe damage but also drains like 70% mana)
    - 27:05 yea he has the dum lmao. Many dum games like that tbh. "You must prove yourself first and then we might consider" Then all hell breaks loose and they become almost a useless ally lmao.

      - 29:40 Not a unique puzzle or any type of puzzle at all, but the trap is kinda brutal in a soft sense
      - 30:50 The fire staff isnt very unique but very high in damage - i usually mix it with the staff shooting black bolts which follows enemies. But I agree, could make each of them unique.
      - 33:33 Omg same, the level should be complete once you get to 1k gold, but youre stuck in there for no good reason.
      - 34:40 Yes, i cant remember why we destroy the cathedral lol
      - 34:46 At long last indeed. The archers at the beggining are a bit much especially as i went as an archer myself (huntress again)
      - 35:23 Finished everything but Dragonborn lmao, idk the game got too repetitive and stale at that point.
      - 35:40 That was a unique trick IMHO and it cuts perfectly, not realizing youre running in circles.
      - 36:50 Ehh, I liked Ark Moor better, but thats just because ive replayed it a million times in demo as a kid i guess
      - 37:32 Whats even worse is that they planned for us to be fighting against those roman dudes because they came and saved us or so the romans would like to believe.
      - 40:16 Yeah... different times lmao
      - 41:05 I legit thought the giant obelisk thingy was just a graphics bug lol
      - 42:00 Idk, i think that was the whole idea - they redeemed themselves by making the dark side campaign a better experience.
I also liked the level - the one before you kidnap the princess.
But like, the levels are all too short, which makes you wanna play more but all you can do is replay the levels with nothing new... except if you decide to mod the game.
I really like the graphics from back then - an upgrade to the similar looking game visual wise Gothic 2.
You didnt even cover Feticia lol, i guess that remains a surprise - ofc she's too OP.
"I havent watched game of thrones"
      DONT!
Its VERY good till like season 4 or 5, but then it completely drops to zero

Good video! Isn't the dark campaign locked in the beginning, so you can't start with it? And I think it's ok to compare this to Dark Souls, especially when trying to give someone a vague idea about the game - you kill enemy after enemy in a kinda linear darkish-grey fantasy setting. The game "Blade of Darkness" is often considered as a kind of proto-Dark-Souls and it feels a lot like Enclave as well. Of course from a modern perspective we have a whole genre of Soulslike games and Enclave doesn't fit in there.

Not even a question, the game is so short that everyone should give it a try
And I would love if some studio would steal this game's idea - mostly because they're just letting it catch dust.
Just like how bullfrog doesnt make anything with Dungeon Keeper anymore, some other studio copied it, got into some legal trouble, but now they're thriving.
Yes they stole the idea, but at least they're giving people a chance at old games which had unique ideas but with modern graphics.
Modern gaming studios need to dig deeper into the past and steal more ideas from old games

Hey! I enjoyed the video and thought I would give some feedback.
For a first video it's pretty good: on a purely technical side I think your voice recording could be a bit better and it would really improve things. Also this might just be me but I noticed a lot of slight slurring. Nothing major at all, but I think it would help to crack down a bit on that. I've heard that "Speaking from the chest" can help with that.
I really liked how you talked about the game's more technical sides when it mattered but didn't get bogged down too much. Like with talking about the box around the character being briefly active.
However, Im not sure how else to put this, but this video has very little "Hookablitity" to it. I'm not being drawn in despite the game being novel. Which isn't the best criticism I could give I know, but I'm not sure how else to put it.
Also, another criticism, which is one I also have of Ross's newer videos, is that I don't think it's necessary to go through the entire game chapter by chapter. I think a bit of editing and structure beyond the linear sequence of events would help everything flow better.

    • @loganfromearth
      @loganfromearth  Před rokem +2

Thank you for your feedback, I love comments like this. I do however have some notes.
I have no problem "speaking from the chest" as you can see at around 26:40. My issue with a lot of reviewers and video essayists is that they often times ONLY speak from the chest, which makes their narration feel static a little bit less authentic to me. This is one of the few things that Ross and I disagree on. So what I decided to do is to speak normally most of the time, but use chest voice for moments that call for it, like being upset or excited about something. The slurred speech mostly comes from this being the first time I've read from a script AND being way too stubborn with doing re-takes. I'll have to work on that, though, so thank you for pointing it out.
The "hookability" is lacking, you're right. I think it comes from me not being good at writing jokes and also me being afraid of coming off as trying way too hard to be funny. Something I'll get better at down the road, I hope.
As for the structure of the video, I don't plan on changing it. The way Ross's newer videos take viewers through the entire game WHILE reviewing it is what I like about them. I think it makes viewers feel like their part of the adventure. BUT You have a good point in that it doesn't necessarily need to be broken down chapter-by-chapter. I could stand to trim some fat.
Thanks again for the commend and for watching, I hope you stick around, I could always use more feedback.

Gameplay is smooth and decent unreal engine is nice ( i think its unreal engine) and it has some variety. Severance and Rune were released around the same time and much better. Shame we didn't get more 3d person fantasy games, the tech was still in its infancy in many ways.

Enclave and Rune two real classics! Some people mention Severance - Blade of Darkness but I think this title is bad, because the combat is slow and truncated, in addition to having few enemies and very large areas that are useless, and the controls are also complete rubbish.

I don't know what the fuck is your problem with a grounded looking medieval towns? I think that level design is the greatest aspect of this game, not every game should be a carnival ride.

YES you should play Enclave because it's super awesome!

  • @incaseofimportantnegotiations

archers are the most awesome in this game you just need to learn to play
a lot of it has high skill floor while the game can be steamrolled on easy and beaten on normal mostly alright but going 146% on hard you have to learn everything

You've really got video making down pat. I'm 12% sure this isn't your first channel. If it is then holy hell. Please make anything. Copy Ross' game dungeon, the librarian, heck you could be the next AVGN if you can be creative with insults.
Your inspirations are on your sleave and it's a very pretty sleave.

Unlike your comment, my review offers both constructive criticism on the flaws of the game while also weighing in on what it gets right. Cope.
