How I Set Up Microphones for My Videos

- I thought I would share how I mic up vocals, how I place the mic on my electric guitar, and how I mic up the acoustic guitar. This stems from the fact that someone thought I mic my acoustic up at 2.5 feet, which I don't. So hopefully this clears up any confusion about my microphone placement. Hopefully this we educational for you

Another reason why you stand head and shoulders, knees and toes above everyone else in this space. The consistency factor and work you do to make this happen is respected and appreciated on all axis.
Axes 🗡️⛏️
Axe eeze.
Ez ex eez
It's exactly that crazy consistency that makes your videos so great and sets your channel apart.
I'm not even interested in podcasting, more into music recording and whenever I look for a well made comparison of a new microphone, your channel is a safe bet. 👍👍👍
I found your channel when was looking for a review of an interface, found a man who loves his job and does it in a detailed way. Cheers, man, keep up the good work.
Got it Bandrew. I will now go experiment by buying a Blue Yeti and talking into the top of the microphone. While I'm at it, I might as well try talking into the bottom of it as well, being sure to place it at least 10 feet away from the sound source
@@choppercove Gonna need that gain when the mic is 10 feet away and talking into the dead side
Hmm interesting…🤔. *(received Telefunken TF47 and is now my favorite tube mic for vocals)* 😳
The first FAN... Of Podcastage 😍😍😍
I believe I saw it in a video of Record like a Pro where he was explaining the placement of a microphone under a piano with the cap facing down to the ground while there was a hihat on the floor to create a reverb. I think that is the kind of experimenting that you mean here.
In a docu about Abba they where explaining how they recorded on the bottom of an empty swimming pool, again for the reverb. It is the stuff you never see, only hear.
Exactly. I've seen people mic the rear of a guitar cab, point the guitar cab at the floor, just do all sorts of stuff that you wouldn't typically do just to see what kind of sounds you'd get.
It's not as though the vast majority of us are recording on 2" tape. We're just recording in a DAW so why not try something different out. Still capture something you know will work , but try something funky as well.
Great video. Would love a video about mic placement for vocals -- how to find the "best" position and what to consider (height, angle, distance, level-bottom-top…) :-)
I completely agree bandrew!, I actually have used your videos in the past when purchasing my Q2U, and now looking at an upgrade have used the videos again to compare because of the consistency of it. so thank you very much 👍
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They're very helpful. Thanks a lot ❤️❤️❤️
Unrelated, but as a fan of watchcastage I am wondering what you think of the new Seiko 5 GMT line. Seems like we may start getting a ton of microbrand GMT watches once Seiko starts selling the movement.
Excellent video. Microphones have been explosive fun since I play guitar, bass, piano. drums and sing.
Great quality content! Thank you!
Fantastic advice, absolute essential and so useful stuff. Great video my friend.
I see the BB58 if I am not mistaken? 🤔
Best regards,
TGV
Hey ya TGV! Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot coming from you.
And yessir it is a BB58, it was my celebration gift for hitting 250k subs last year.
I will not take credit for starting that acoustic guitar discourse on the server but I'll gladly laugh about it. Nice to see more into the isobox, and how tiny the I51 is in comparison.
You should take credit for this. Asking why I mic my acoustic 2.5 feet away just confused me. And if one person thinks it, it's likely that more than one person thinks it, so might as well make a video addressing it and hopefully educate in the process.
One thing that I would really like to see on here is some xlr headset reviews like the Shure sm35 or the Shure WH20XLR, I would like to see how they stack up to a real mic. I have been curious about getting one for content creation and using them for gaming.
Agreed. I take general advice but don't directly copy placement. I also tend to have to move mics based on my own personal needs. I prefer off-axis without a pop filter generally for vocals and the distance varies depending on how much I need the mic out of my face. With the NT1 I usually have it in that configuration and don't use the pop filter. Sometimes I use the NT1 off-axis and other times SM57 off-axis with its shock mount and thick windscreen and other times directly in front because it blocks plosives so well and actually acoustically colors the mic for the better. I also use subtle digital compression and EQ routed through a DAW and ASIO for voice chat to reduce peaking, sibilance, and potential rumble or proximity effect. I also like to use Bandrew's voice for reference because we have similar ranges.
Hi Bandrew. "Set up," the verb, is two words, just like set off, set apart, set aside, set in, and to be set up (put in a position to fail). A setup is a noun, an arrangement of something. You can't "setup" something, but you can set something up.
Thanks for sharing.
Excellent vid.
"The Box of Doom" and "Dirty Shirley" met one dark and rainy night...
Danke!
re: electric guitar, where does the mic end up relative to the center of the dust cap? i tend to think of mic placement for guitar with that as a reference point, and adjust from there as needed.
I am your fan and always watch your videos. I asked you which one is the best mic for dealing with noise, because my room is very noisy. They are the Samson Q2U, ATR2100X, Maono HD300, & XM8500 (with Behringer UM2). Or if you have any other suggestions for a good noise-rejecting microphone for under $100. Thanks.
Got it. Keep all my mics at the exact distances you have. Check. :)
your best Video ever.
Thank you for this video. Could you tell us how do you process your voiceover?
He already made a detailed video about it
Bandrew is a great catch! Hope his wife treats him real nice.
What about the boosts in post? Do you do it to always get the same LUFS-I, or something like that?
And thanks for all the diligence in making these tests and comparisons. It’s really appreciated 😁
I actually don't have a standardized LUFS level from video to video. That might be something that I need to start doing.
I'm gonna go w axi ( long i ) like the pluralization of octopus or platypus . Great content as always .
Ty
Please do a review of maono pm422 and compare it to at2020 and some other cheap microphones
i was wondering this lol thanks
You sound good on axiises.
KEEP DOING VS SERIES
HA! You said duty.
Bandrew!
does it not just appear infront of you
Let me read the comm6. He floats between 3 to six inches preferably
I will take this knowledge, buy a sandwich, eat said sandwich, and appreciate what you do.
Bandrew, now that I know all your secrets, I wanted to ask you about the object on the upper left half of the sealed wooden box under the bed.
I'm so confused about what you're asking about. Huh?
@@Podcastage well, as you said, "now that you know ALL my secrets" :)
Is that a Tudor?
Yessir
I commend your taste
U do get a great punk tone though 😊☝️
Thanks Jared. That's the extent of my ability with guitar tone. Haha. I appreciate that though.
I swear you have to stop moaning at the beginning of the FAQ videos i will stop playing you on my speakers forever oml 🤣
Plural of axis is axes 👍🏾
What if i have an Axe, and you add one? Axes! WOOO.
Gotta differenciate them somehow
The speaker has a little house, but can it afford it?.
you suddenly sound like an anime girl at the beginning of the video
Is that a Tudor watch? Buying mics and reviewing them must be lucrative.
Yes it is. Not sure id classify it as lucrative, but I did start paying myself starting in 2020 after years of not being able to. Keep in mind I have been working 60-80 hours a week between my day job and CZcams for 7 years.
7 years of working non stop and having no life allows you to save some money.
Congrats
