Men have naturally faster reaction times, naturally calmer under pressure, less prone to emotional overreaction, spacial awareness, fast twitch muscles, higher bone density, larger heart and lungs, skeletal structure designed for carrying heavy loads, etc, all built for combat readiness naturally. These things are also why, even in video games, they men outperform women. It is also extremely unlikely that an average woman will be better equipped than the average man. Everything you said is based on feminist dogma that women can be just as good as men at combat. This is entirely incorrect. Even the military has disproven this. Male only fighting forces score better than male and female mixed fighting forces. Female only groups just get wrecked. There's a reason they have lower physical fitness standards for women to even join the military, let alone join elite level units. They simply cannot perform at the level men can. The most elite groups in the military have no female combatants, because their bodies simply cannot do what men's can. Also, putting your woman in the line of fire naturally increases her chance of injury or death. Even if she were the "better" shooter, you as the man, directly addressing the threat and giving her the opportunity to escape, naturally increases her chance of survival in every scenario. Anything else is just justification for cowardice.

Even if I missed, the robber would most likely try to run instead of trading fire. The 2nd time, where you were armed and they were not and you knew it, I just don't get it. As long as you make sure no one is attacking you from behind, there is no reason to stay holed in your room. And forget all of those, if your wife said she heard a noise downstairs and that she was scared, what would be your first instinct?

The word protection is very vague. The key is what is the best solution to diffuse the situation everyone will have different opinions and answers. There are many right and wrong answers as there is no one way to deal with the situation, but there are preferable solutions that can be agreed upon only after the act. Protection is the wrong word human instinct especially for men is to Fight-or-flight response not protect. Fighting can be protective so can flight, the problem might be ego.
