10:27 "Myrkky" means poison in Finnish. Quite an interesting location name.
21:09 "Messinki" is brass in Finnish. It's from the Germanic word "messing"
There is a great idea for a game. Funny place names
@@Skege1000 Great idea!
@@alloverthemap23 there truly are really funny and naughty names 🤣🤣
That fighter plane is Draken SAAB J 35B, which was used as a training plane in the Finnish Air Force for 23 years (1972-1995).
It was a full blooded fighter jet actually, not a trainer.
@@fleshesposito especially this particular one since it's a single seater
-2000 actually (Fighter sqn 11, Rovaniemi)
@@Hairysteed Last B-model Drakens were retired in 1995. F- and S-models remained in service until 2000.
@@fleshesposito J35BS was always considered a trainer in Finland, a substitute for J35FS and J35S with more capable radar sets, to spare newer planes from some flight hours.
Bicycle routes (kevyen liikenteen väylät) are not anNew phenomenon in Finland. I guess the boom started as early as in late 1970s and 1980s.
Found a thesis work that confirms that the focus towards building bike paths along the roads begun here around 1970s. Though there might have been an odd one built even before that.
I started biking on my own in 1976.
Bike paths were everywhere here In Ulvila by then .
Congrats for platinum medal in Finland and 1000th video and hopefully you'll reach the 100k views!
Answers for some of your questions:
The fall isn't here yet. The daily temperatures here in south are still over 20°C/70°F and the nature is green. It begins to change to autumn colors from the north in September and it reaches southern parts of the country in the following weeks.
Haukipudas used to be an independent municipality, but it was merged to Oulu in 2013.
The jet in Turku was a Saab J35 Draken. They were replaced with F/A-18 Hornets in 1990s and some of those Drakens were left as memorials like that one. Finland's Hornets will be replaced with F-35s soon.
That electric thing in the middle of the roundabout in Imatra is a memorial for Rautarouva (iron ma'am) line which was an electric line from Imatra to Viipuri (Vyborg), Helsinki and Turku and it was built in 1920s. Very near to that location is still the biggest hydropower plant of the country. Its capacity is 192 MW and annual production 1 TWh.
Thanks! A Saab jet - quite interesting! F-35s are on their way
That "lighthouse" sign directs travellers towards "Rantatie" - road on the coast. It goes along the Gulf of Bothnia all the way from the south to the north.
Haukipudas is now a part of Oulu, the municipal merger happened in 2013.
What was the reason for a municipal merger?
@@alloverthemap23 Usually, the reason for mergers is economy: smaller municipalities have trouble fulfilling what is required by law. In this case it seems that there was a vision (by the mayor of Oulu?) of "Greater Oulu", a large municipality that could be the powerhouse of the 65th latitude.
Please, someone can correct me if I'm mistaken.
These municipalities have merged with Oulu at some point: Oulujoki (1965), Ylikiiminki (2009), Haukipudas (2013), Kiiminki (2013), Oulunsalo (2013) and Yli-Ii (2013). Muhos rejected the merger in 2013, and Ii probably is not currently interested.
Sir, you clearly love the art of GeoGuessr with that number of videos, my hat's off to you!
Imatra actually hosted motorbike grand prix for years, those are the rememnants of the street track.
Hail to Jarno Saarinen and Giacomo Agostini.
It did also this summer. That roundabout is part of the track.
24:35 that jetfighter is SAAB Draken that was used by Finnish Air Forces between 1972-2000. Those fighters were replaced by McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets beginning 1995
I live in Teuva second round of game lol
First time I've visited Teuva in GeoGuessr!
The fighter jet reminds me, somehow I've always lived in a place that is close to an airport and the fighter jets typically have practice on a certain day of the week. When I was a kid (1970s) they were still allowed to break the sound barrier when they flew over places where people live, and that always made a huge bang that kept echoing a long time afterwards. Fighters make 10x more noise that other planes anyways.
Wow, that's interesting!
Yup, some trees are already turning in the northern finland. We have a word for it: "ruska" (autumn leaf colors).
oulu=magenta busses
turku=yellow busses
helsinki=blue or orange busses
kuopio=blue/purple busses
tampere=blue/white busses
4:34 yes, seems about right. That's Lahti.
Thumbnail seemed familiar, and yes, went past that plane daily for five years
I'm From Turku and drive past the Jet almost every week!
You got the platinum medal for the 25k, that's why it didn't look like gold.
Yes, I'm a bit old school so I always think of the Olympics - Gold, Silver, Bronze. I forget Platinum. Haha
congrats on 1000 videos 🎉💪
Thanks. I enjoy doing it.
24:42 Afermative, it's real.
We can't play along if you didn't set it to Challenge! All i can see is your results
But to get the platinum medal he wanted he had to play in single player. I guess they've done it that way because otherwise you could just have someone create a challenge link and let you know the locations and easily get the 25k.
gg
Thanks
Biketrails have come since 1960's-70's.
Steadily increasing.
That's great. We have a decent network of rail trails here in the US. Old rail lines now bike trails believe or not...
Enää vain 998 700 katselua jäljellä. Jaksaa jaksaa!
