    My first ukulele has a command hook. I use an old purse strap with a small key ring at the end. It has served me well for 7 years and counting! The strap is most likely woven in Guatamala, so it looks similar to a traditional strap, just not as wide.

  • @robertmarrow
    @robertmarrow Před 4 lety +2

    I made a strap that holds just the neck which is the only part that needs support since the body sits in my lap (I play sitting). Just wind each end around the neck and tie to the length that suits. Tying with a bow instead of a knot makes it flexible. Now I can use my left hand with my thumb behind the neck without worrying about using my left hand to hold the neck in position. Thanks for giving me this great idea.

  • @sararobert9855
    @sararobert9855 Před 6 lety +22

    I made a first version strap but because I sew, I made bias tape and added buttons and button holes to put it in place, so that I don't have to tie it. I don't really like it however because the part at the "waist" bothers me when I am playing.
    So maybe it would be a good idea to try that with the other options but instead of tying the ends I would put on a button on the part at the top of the uke (for the 2nd version), and then just a buttonhole to go in the hook(s).
    Just sharing the idea for all the sewing lovers :)
    Be careful though, if you do the 2nd version, put the button hole at the very end of the strap, and the button higher, because you won't be able to make the button go behind the strings.

    I love the fact that your hair matches the strap, and your nails match the hooks. You are always thinking about the esthetics of the situation! :)
    As for the straps, I am only having trouble holding my soprano. I don't have trouble supporting my concert ukulele or the tenors that I have played (I don't own one... yet!). But the soprano is just so little for me, I can't seem to get myself scrunched up enough to hold it securely with my left arm so that my right is free to move from one chord to certain others where I feel like I need to let go of the neck end to get my fingers into position. I kind of hesitate to do anything, because I know I am not the first person to be met with this problem! But rather than get frustrated by this, I am looking at a half-strap or uke leash that someone makes just to hold the neck end without needing to be attached to the other end (it attaches to the player instead). I'm hoping it will help in this situation without causing me to develop bad habits. I don't intend to use it on the larger ukes, so I think I will be ok. But I am not going to dye my hair pink. :)

I'm not sure if I would've used the adhesive hooks, but they definitely are practical without the difficulty of making a hole ((especially if you ~don't~ have a drill but you ~do~ have neighbours to disturb with a hammer)). Yours are cute.

    This helped so much! I have a friend who is learning how to play the uke, and she always says she has trouble playing and standing so i went out and bought the command hooks at target and they worked so perfectly! And since i have so many extra i told her about the diy and gave her some! Oh btw we both think option 2 is the best because it hold the uke in place :))

      Oh my goodness! I am so happy to hear about this. Thank you so much for coming back and letting me know that the diy worked for you and your friend. Every month make sure to test that the hooks are still sticky so that your ukulele is safe 💕

    Thanks Bernadette! All my ukes have a strap now and it’s so much easier to move around with! Loving it! 💕

    This is brilliant! I just bought a Kala Waterman, and I love option #3 for adding a strap to my plastic uke.

    Watching this while stuck at home. Mahalo for the suggestion of using those Command hooks. I have a nice uke that I don't want to drill, but I don't like those tone hole straps either. Aloha.

    As a mandolin player I'll say that para cord works great and can be woven. Iv also used long leather that's can be got from hobby lobby store.

    Love the third option, Bernadette! What I found helpful: instead of putting the top-most clip where you placed it, place it past the neck, just on the other side, and it won't do the leaning downward thing that happened in the video.
    Thanks for such a wonderful and crafty idea, Bernadette!

    another way is to do it is quite like option two, but instead of a commander hook you can use a strong type of tape
    it’s been working well for me, regular duct tape is good
    it’s not the best thing in the world, but i feel as if it’s more secure than the hooks

    Great diy uke straps. I always like 2 strap buttons it's the best option.
    1. It holds on better
    2. hugs your body more so does not flop down like when tied on headstock.
    3. These straps you made are a bit too thin guitar straps are way more comfortable
    4. you can adjust guitar straps.
    5. You can use the tshirt string, twine etc to make a loop to hook the strap on if the holes for regular strap buttons don't work. This is the best option in my opinion.
