This is the story of Milli Vanilli…one of the biggest scandals to rock the music industry.
Part one looked at how Milli Vanilli was formed and Frank Farian the producer behind it all before covering their meteoric rise to success and scandalous fall from grace. We also looked into what the duo did in the 30 years that followed the miming scandal.
In Part two we dive deeper into the details and reveal the shocking truth the record industry doesn't want you to know! Milli Vanilli were NOT the only imposters!

C&C Music Factory was ALWAYS about money as well as fashion, jewelry and hairstyles.
I mean they never pretended that the dancers were singing the song as by then everyone knew what sampling was and how dance music was made.
Likewise Black Box, I mean everyone I knew was aware that it was a sample loop.
They were always promoted as models and dancers.
It was all a bit yuppie cringe but I think this documentary misrepresents what C&C and the mega-hit dance music of the early 90s was all about.
So someone who sang a session song and was paid a basic studio fee is miffed they didn't get credit on a record that they otherwise had no input on at all but seriously the record companies OWNED those samples.

None of today's stars can truly sing live with very few exceptions. Autotune corrects what nature didn't provide. They're chosen entirely for their youth, attractiveness & mass appeal. Between the Telecommunications Act of '96, the advent of Autotune, the loudness wars & all these audition shows, Pop music is a dead art. Nothing is organic; groups are the result of auditions & not people meeting in real life like Boyz II Men or The Supremes. Pop lyrics now average a 4th grade comprehension level and declining. 😥

Must be lucrative or they wouldn't do it. The music industry is a pimp-ho business model: pay for the artists' clothes, cars used in music videos, touring costs, drugs & parties then tell them they owe YOU money after the tour's over. It's part of the reason they want young (often poor Black) naive singers--so they'll not understand contracts & fine print.

That's the gamble they take. If it's successful, they make enough to be able to pay up expenses, (usually out of court), to make it worth their while, and if it flops, hardly anyone notices it and there's no real case against them. It's a win-win for them. Contracts are written up with the fine print worded in such a way that the record companies literally own the recordings with the artists only getting royalties, usually only about 3% of any profits. And, if they can find a loophole where the actual singer isn't credited, they'll take it. Any legal action taken in retrospect is already accounted for. The record companies don't lose out, that's for sure.

Milli Vanilli were definitely scapegoated. I made fun of them too like everyone else did back then until I watched Vh1's Behind the music about it. That scandal really destroyed their lives professionally and personally for a long while and, I think caused Rob who was already fighting depression and drug addiction that nobody knew about to take his life. Always thought it was cool that Arsenio Hall was the first to have them perform as themselves when that whole scandal was over with.

There was another huge hit in 1990 with the same pattern. Snap! and "The power" The lyrics which define the song are taken from "Love's gonna get you" from Jocelyn Brown. Again in the video someone else was lip syncing. Jocelyn was neither credited, nor paid or asked for permission to use her voice. The whole case ended up in a law suit as well.

The story of "The Power" is a little more complicated than that. The original version samples vocals from both Jocelyn Brown and Chill Rob G. Chill Rob G vocals were replaced by Turbo B who rerecorded the sample (adding a couple of lines) and Penny Ford (musical director and backing singer for Chaka Khan) also recorded new vocals. In the video Jackie Harris mimes to the vocals of both Penny Ford and Jocelyn Brown. It's definitely a story worth telling though!

I also remember the others here of course, that all came after, and though I knew that lots of movies dubbed in the singing in a lot of musicals and movies showing an actor singing, but I was surprised just exactly how sneaky and underhanded it was at times, towards the actors and the singers!

But Dolenz learned to play. This was a situation where they weren't using other singers' voices. Whatever. They had great sonwriters, including Nesmith, John Stuart, Boyce and Hart and Neil Diamond among others. And their sound was great. The Beatles used other musicians in their songs. Like Eric Clapton in While My Guitar Gently Weeps. George Harrison just couldn't play like that (I am no Clapton fan as a solo act or his racism). Paul McCartney played the drums for Ringo on Dear Prudence, who up and quit for a while on the White Album. Studio musicians are rarelygiven credit. They sometimes have to fight for it. Sadly, you're right. The music industry wasn't set up for the sake of the music, or the fans, or the musicians. It was started by opportunists in search of the next money-making scheme. Many of the people that set up the first music publishers previously sold corsets, bras, bibles and encyclopedias, when Edison patented his phonograph he intended it for use in court cases to record the events, not as a music medium. When it was sold as a domestic playback device the first recordings were speeches, comedy routines and sermons as well as music. Like all ventures undertaken solely for profit the only 2 ways to make money is to underpay your workers/suppliers or overcharge your customers, or both.
For example. Back when the Beatles were putting out music a record cost 40p, the equivalent of 2hrs wages for men, (or 4 hours for women!) thats like charging $20 for one song in 2022! Yet from that 40p the Beatles were paid just 1p shared 4 ways.
The exploitation of both the musicians and audience is baked into the music industry.

Much appreciated! The last week or so has a seen a massive increase of views for the channel, hopefully it stays at this level or grows more... you commenting like this really helps the channel get picked up by "the algorithm" i've had more comments in the last week than most of last year...i think its the engagement that is causing the growth. So Thank YOU! :)

This is excellent, I've watched both parts and I agree with your thoughts about Milli Vanilli . At the time it all happened, I thought the industry was embarrassed that they'd been caught, hence how Milli Vanilli were treated. I remember the issue with Tight Fit, it was news for a day or so and then everybody got on with their lives, we even bought their second single 'Fantasy Island', catchy song and we liked the image. Keep up the excellent work.

I thought that The Temptations and The Four Tops played their instruments in the studio.I later found out that the Funk Brothers played instruments on their studio tracks.

    • @Traxploitation
      @Traxploitation  Před rokem +1

Funny thing is, many of the "Funk Brothers" don't even know what songs they played on. It was a fast production line. They never did more than 5 takes of a song and would do 12 hour sessions. Even with breaks that's like 35 songs a day! Many of the songs didn't have the final titles so they had no idea what they played on. I worked with some of them to try and get them some unpaid royalties but they were often uncredited. In the end a decision was made to split the revenue among all the motown sessions players active at the time of each recording if the line ups weren't specifically noted.

To beat it all, these are great songs! All the ones listed here, that was popular in the US, are still "go to" and favorite songs I will always play. I was crazy about the Monkeys music, and I had the Archie's album too! To love these songs so much, it's extremely disappointing to not have the proper credit on everything! Heartbreaking for these artists. 💜

🤔Wow, this was very informative! I come from the music business, and always hated lip syncing of artists that looked good, but had no real singing talent, and the producer had to make their hits, thru autotune, and melodine, etc. Now as far as an artist lip syncing to something they had nothing to do with, is 10×s worse! I had no idea that this was going on all the way back to the 40s. This entertainment industry is very dishonest, and it always comes down to the money, at all cost! All u can do if ur a part of it, is make the best of it, and hope to be treated as fairly as possible, and make smart investments!🙏🏽
