I totally agree that MV were horribly crucified & humiliated back in the day. In actual fact Fab is a pretty fair singer, ive heard a bit of his recent shows and hes actually very entertaining. Im so glad hes risen above this. The loss of Rob though was so sad & terrible - no doubt their humiliation went a long way towards his darkest depths of his mental decline.

At the time I enjoyed the scandal and laughing at the guys but now I feel regret. They were conned as much as the public were. They turned to drugs because of the intense pressure and scrutiny and paid a high price just for being naïve and pretty boys. Very sad. If only he’d let them sing on the album. The tracks don’t even require a great voice, it’s a pop group. Looks and marketing sell the product.

There was likely a contract between the producer and the actual vocal artists. Today every pop concert you see is on playback. Madonna, beyonce, cardi b whatever. They all mime their words and just dance around. When beyonce sang for Obama she was acting for the cameras as it was.

Hard to watch this without crying. Loved Milli Vanilli and what happened to them wasn't fair. Before Milli Vanilli there weren't really any black boy groups out there, I was in the UK, New Edition wasn't that big there so Milli Vanilli were probably the first for girls my age, we still loved them even after the scandal. The reason why is because most people who go to those shows are there to see the person on stage and don't give a crap about their musical ability. At a lot of those shows you can't even hear the music. Some years back I took my nieces to see Hannah Montana, who lip syncs in concert, and you couldn't even hear the music. The times were changing and Farian didn't correctly read the audience. In the disco era, lip syncing with good looking front men/women wasn't as big of a deal as it was in the late 80's/early 90's. Their fall wouldn't have been so hard if it became an "open secret" like Boney-M, but they also wouldn't be as popular. The worst was getting the Grammy. I worked at Six Flags St Louis a summer when Milli Vanilli came through in concert. While I owned their CD and enjoyed their songs and videos there was an incident that happened that day that changed my mind. A friend of mine was working rides that day when Rob and Fab came bouncing through the very full, very busy line to get on and ride the coaster. He said it was the look on their face and the way they spoke to him about how they were going to do this and not going to do that ( talking about the long line wait I presume). Once you reach a certain level of fame, it goes right into your being. It changes you. Did they really think the world would not find out what was going on? They should have been more gracious and grateful for the brief time in the limelight.

The whole sordid mess could have been so easily avoided if, once he’d found the faces for his new project, Farian had recognised that he’d actually had a stroke of luck in that his pretty faces could also sing, and simply re-recorded the vocals with Rob and Fab. The vocals on those songs are completely unremarkable, and that last clip shows that Fab, at least, was more than capable of matching them.

But Frank Farien didn't want them to sing. Don't you understand? He wanted to deny the Black people he hired for their Black look and skill at dancing, the credit, money and royalties that you get from singing. He wanted to keep it all for himself.
Otherwise he would have hired singers, there is enough talent out there. Frank Farien thought he was so smart.
He literally ruined the careers of Milli Vanilli and caused the death of one of the members. Sadly.

Milli Vanilli had great musicians and wonderful vocals, Rob and Fab looked great. All did nothing wrong until the Grammy's came along. There was another band in the 80's called Lime out of Canada, the singers and musicians stayed home and they sent out pretty people to sing their songs, everyone loved the music and everyone loved the 'singers' ..... Sad story in the end. Farian is still a musical genius. Boney-M is beloved around the world, and most of their fans know Farian sings the male vocals. Now days record companies hire pretty people who can't sing a lick and just autotune them!

My mom told me of the time she was in High School and Milli Vanilli was one of the biggest things and when it came out that they weren't the ones singing many girls were devastated of the fact that they were idolizing fake singers. It's quite a shame that these guys could actually sing and they were just taken advantage of by a guy whose career was a failure.

    And of course, it
    • was 1989
    •with two young, black men
    • men who also subverted gender norms
    • with a middle aged white, man typical of his time, as their manager
    • a man who was very well established in the industry, had an established reputation, and had worked in the industry many years
    • a man who could -and did- whatever he pleased unapologetically
    • he was rich, had financial resources and experience with money
    • he was educated in how the industry worked, how to make it work for him, and particularly in contracts
•Fab & Rob had no financial resources or experience with money, nor any education or experience in contracts or the level of exploitation in the industry
•it was a duo enjoyed primarily by young people, it crested a style and cultural shift seemingly overnight, corrupting the children with their long hair, leggings and boots, and their skin colour.
    • and of course, two black men became the biggest musical act in the world. They had been co-signed by an older white man, ‘these guys are cool, promise’.
    • that rug was pulled, and Frank Farian snuck out the back exit, able to dust his hands clean. He was tricked, a victim of _them_.
    • Frank Farian could have stood up at any point and said ‘I created this, they were tricked and exploited, they didn’t know until it was too late and then they didn’t know how to get out’
    • Instead, he signed their death warrant. Just as their success was determined by his signature (even if the lip syncing had never happened), so too was their failure.
    • Frank Farian ensured it was the most spectacular of failures because if they are looking at the dumpster fire over there, they won’t look at him.
    • There was a complete imbalance of power. It’s going to come out more and more as our society shifts, as we learn, and grow in consciousness and empathy.
    • Britney Spears, Amanda Bynes, all of Harvey Weinsteins victim survivors, Corey Feldman, Macaulay Caulkin have only just now found some small form of reckoning against those who misuse power in the entertainment industry. For people of colour and other minorities it’s still years away.
But it’s getting closer, and the Frank Farians of the world should feel very uncomfortable.
Thanks for a brilliant video, can’t wait to watch you skyrocket 🚀🚀

Rob and Fab were really taken advantage of. I feel really bad for them, being so young and not really familiar with how this business works. No lawyer or representative, they didn't know what to do, when in reality, any lawyer could have gotten them out of that contract AND probably could have sued on their behalf for a substantial amount.
I really don't understand why they weren't allowed to just sing the songs themselves. They had talent and probably would have done ok. They both get made fun of a lot but none of what happened was their fault.

  • @SavedByGrace_CitizenEmperor

Very good documentary. Fans are weird. They demand honesty but they enjoyed Milli Vanilli when they didn't know the truth. But when they found out, all of a sudden the same wasn't good anymore.
How often are artists just the faces and the singers who front the music that was produced by others? I think we should enjoy the music or not. Music is best when many people work on it who combine their talents.
I mean, music that was written and produced by the artists themselves isn't automatically goood and the opposite. Ella Fitzgerald only sang the songs and didn't write them. But I get that in the mainstream, music without faces, personalities, styles, cool videos, images doesn't work and that the audience likes to be lied at with fake stories, scandals, rumours and whatever.
