    "Orginially Japanese Control" = japanese colour on the map (not control markers BUT THE JAPANESE COLOURED AREAS I GUESS). Not Wake/East indies/Solomon Islands etc.
    Also you can not hunt subs (Outside French Indo China) with only planes/subs/ships other than destroyers. Only DDs can force subs to fight.
    Nice video, I am just starting the 1942 scenario myself, hoping to get a game on soon.

      Yeah, I guess we forgot that point there...he probably would have submerged. But, I had nothing around the area for his subs to sink, so I don't think it decided much.

    I'm not familiar with the anniversary edition, but I thought that to move ships from the Mediterranean to what is SZ 16 in this version, wouldn't you have to control both sides of the straight? And with Turkey being neutral I don't understand how that's possible? So from my current understanding the Italian ships shouldn't have been able to move into the SZ and take Stalingrad.

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for the good question! In this version, Turkey is neutral, but doesn't straddle the straits, so the game doesn't mention that sz16 is off limits. It speaks of Panama and the Suez, but not Suez, so we take it as a movable strait. Check out page 7 in the rule book.
      You can certainly house-rule it shut, but I think they left it open to give Italy that option. Thanks for watching!

    Serious question . I have this game and I finally got some friends willing to play . How long do you estimate newbies take to play this game ( after we learn the basic rules ). And let’s say how long does it take for someone like you ( pro ) to play an entire game . All these estimates in one go / sitting

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh, that's a tough question. I think if you set aside 6 hours, you should be just fine. If that's not enough for your first game, it will be for later ones, as you get to know the rules and the flow of the game. I predict that after 6 hours, you should know who will win. It may sound like a lot of time, but it's less than 2 football games on Sunday afternoon!
      For those who know it well...I think we'd likely be able to know who is going to win after about 4 hours. Sometimes it can be closer, but usually by then, it's starting to tilt one way or the other. But, if there's a BIG battle (Moscow, for instance), we will play until that is resolved.
      It really depends on whether you play with guys who will play to the bitter end, or if you have a group that recognizes when the game is over. I play with the latter group, although I have played (long ago) people who demand that the rules be followed, so Tokyo or London MUST fall. Sigh. Takes a while and is uber-boring.

    In A&A anniversary edition 2017, Germany was able to successfully invade Britain, BUT The German capital is occupied by the British. What happens now??? Do the Germans get the British money but just can’t use it, or is the money not seized, or can the Germans seize and use the money, or does it just vanish and no one can use it?

    I have a question, tanks cost 5 , infantary cost 3 , if you spam tanks how can you counter them? Does infantary spam really counter tank spam?

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  Před 5 lety

      Hello Miguel, you bring up a good point! (And, that's why they raised the cost of tanks to "6" and gave them better defense!) I think there are a few considerations to be made when comparing the infantry vs. tank spam.
      Firstly, if I may use a set IPC amount, we can compare the offensive capabilities. If I have 30 IPC's, I can purchase either 10 infantry or 6 tanks. (I won't get into the percentages and probabilities right now, as that would get too involved!)
      On offense, that gives me ten pips of infantry attack vs 15 pips of tank attack, which, in Low Luck, would be one hit for the infantry, with a 66% chance of a second hit, and the tanks would be two hits, with a 50% chance of a third hit.
      On defense, that gives me twenty pips of infantry defense vs 15 pips of tank
      defense. In Low Luck, that means three hits for the infantry, with a 33% chance of a fourth hit, while the tanks remain at two hits and 50% chance for a third.
      Granted, that is on the first round only, and dice will be dice...
      So, if you are having these two stacks facing each other, if the infantry attacks, they will probably lose. If the tanks attack, they will probably lose.
      Now, here are the variables that appear quite readily in this game:
      If you have a low economy, you will tend to be on the defensive, and will purchase infantry for the best 'bang for buck', i.e., two pips for three IPC's. If you have a strong economy, you tend to lean towards tanks, and you can replace losses, and you are probably on the offensive and need that extra speed to get out to the front more quickly.
      And the Blitz ability can't be overstated!
      Also, buying two tanks takes a good chunk of change that may be better spent on air or ships, so it is a commitment.
      One important note: you can move two infantry on a single transport, which gives an easier method of reinforcement than tanks, and also gives more pips - four vs three.
      But, in my experience, an infantry spam is not an effective strategy. Without help from stronger units, infantry is fairly anemic and your opponent can easily contain your forces. The best strategy in the more recent versions of A&A is to get a combined force moving, (i.e., infantry, artillery, tanks, and aircraft), which then compels your enemy to build accordingly. As with all effective warfare, if you can't move, you can't win! (Unless your opponent is a fool...)

      @@TheHilltopPillbox so for example in the 1942 scenario , if you are the russians how is the best way to hold against the germans? Of course the UK needs to help them, but can the russians stop the german advance? I have read in some places that the best way is to spam infantary basically , so i was wondering if you had some idea to stop the germans in the 1942 as playing the russians, thanks

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  Před 5 lety

      @@TugaMaster1 Well, that's a loaded question! If you ask ten different players, you'll get ten different answers...
      For my part, I like to keep the German player honest. If I just build infantry, I can never truly threaten his movement in and around Moscow because I lack any offensive punch. Any good German player would build a few infantry, a stack of tanks, and use his whole airforce, and then charge towards Moscow. (A really good German player will have Japan gobble up the eastern Soviet territories, too!)
      Yes, infantry will be your backbone of defense, but you really need to keep your air force intact. If you ever have a chance to make an attack on German tanks, it's much more likely that you'll do some major damage if you have 4 or 5 aircraft supporting the infantry. I highly recommend staying away from buying too many tanks until the USSR is past any immediate danger. You have some to start with, and I suggest bringing them to Moscow.
      Also build a few artillery to give a 100% increase to paired infantry. But you will be counting on the hits coming from your air power. More than once, I have sortied out of Moscow against a big stack of German tanks and either wiped it out, or made it impotent as a fighting force - just using infantry and fighters.
      Yes, you will lose a few infantry, but you can also retreat when you feel it's not going well. And, you can replace your losses faster than the German player can. He will tend to move towards more and more tanks as the game progresses, as he sees the threat from the UK/US landings taking shape. You can almost afford to trade hits with him, if he is losing tanks and you are losing infantry.
      But, as pretty much all A&A players know, USSR cannot survive on her own, unless Germany attempts Sealion. If Germany comes straight at you, you will need immediate assistance from your Allies, or it just won't work! A strong Allied move is to get into Norway and build a factory. That will keep the German player honest and will force him to hold more units back in Leningrad.
      I hope that helps!
