Keto Bread from Wal*Mart Reviewed w/Glucose Testing

- The keto breads that you find online tend to be pretty expensive, so naturally people are going to be curious about the less expensive breads at places like Wal*Mart. In this video, I review three different loaves: two from Lewis and one from Brownberry (Orowheat on the west coast; Arnold on the east coast). I also do blood glucose testing to see what impact, if any, that they have.

If you notice the morning glucose spike on this video's thumbnail, that had an interesting cause. I was pulling on a t-shirt as I was walking out of my bedroom and hit my elbow on the doorframe hard enough to leave a mark. It definitely rated a 9 out of 10 on the pain scale and per the Levels software for my continuous glucose monitor, I had a 36 mg/dL spike in my glucose. Wild stuff...
Also, the reason I do these glucose tests on some videos (even though I'm not diabetic) is that I feel that these tests are still relevant. First, if a product spikes my glucose as a non-diabetic, I think it would be concerning to a diabetic. Second, maintaining a level blood glucose is important to metabolic health whether your diabetic or not.
So Iâm trying to understand. Are you saying basically all keto breads your going to experience a spike? Or just those in particular??
I appreciate you adding in the glucose level. I am a type 1 diabetic and it's very hard to find things that dont spike my glucose levels. Thank you.
I'm really curious as to why you're doing a glucose at one hour though?
@@redbirdacreswi The continuous meter collects measurements continuously. I've discovered, though, that I peak at around one hour, so I validate the measurement with a blood glucose monitor to show that (for people who want to test themselves but don't want the expense of a continuous glucose monitor).
@@redbirdacreswi I suffer from insulin resistance My 1 hour test is always sky high , but 2 hour is always normal. Do your half hour and one hour, you might be very surprised!
Oh you just broke my heart! I've been purchasing and enjoying this bread for the past year. Weight went from 172 to 138 in that year. It was the only thing that has help me survive a low carb lifestyle!
If you're enjoying the bread and it's not causing you issues, then it's your call if you want to keep eating it. I'm just one data point.
think for yourself lmao
This bread helps my husband and I with keto as well. I don't know if it is hindering us at all, but it sure is nice to have "bread"! I love the cinnamon version toasted with a small amount of Mara Natha brand peanut butter and a drizzle of Walden Farms maple flavored syrup.
"It doesn't taste like anything I've had in nature." That's why I love your video reviews, Steve! You are so honest!
Yay nature
Thank you Steve, for taking the hit and keeping us well informed. Appreciate this very much.
Thank you once again for doing all the research into these breads for us!
Once again, Thanks for doing these comparisons, Steve!!!
As always your reviews are appreciated. What I like about your reviews is your honest perspective. I appreciate your description of taste, texture and smell and not that a product tastes good or that you donât like it, but providing adjectives to describe the product or provide an example of a similar non-keto product i.e. texture like Wonder Bread.
Thank you Steve for all the effort you put for our keto community.
Thanks for taking the time to compare these breads. I eat the low carb bread from Sola and while it might not feel/taste like Wonder Bread, it serves it purpose of being bookends to what I have in the middle. đ
I really respect your work ethic. Iâm guessing thereâs a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes too.
Your analytical approach and your consistency combined with your personality, make for educational and enjoyable viewing. Thank you!
Don't eat any factory packaged food.
There were no statistics, as he did one sample of each. This isn't a useful test. Then he throws on all sort of anecdotes about his knee inflammation, again with a single data point.
Appreciate the testing & information you provide in doing the reviews.
I don't buy anything without reading the ingredient list. I also have to go by total carbs because I've found they all count for me.
Have a blessed day!
Thanks Steve for all your hard work. Thanks again Jennifer đ€©
I just started using the Signos CGM last week and have been amazed at the data I am receiving. It's been interesting to see how things I THOUGHT would be an issue are not, and things that I thought would NOT be an issue ARE. So eye-opening!
Thank you for the review Steve. I especially appreciate your comments on your inflammation. Keto has been as much about weight loss as inflammation and other markers for me if not more.
Your info is helpful thorough and honest. Love your dry sense of humor as well.
Love your food reviews with the glucose levels analysis. High value information for sure!!!
I am with you in that I preferred darker breads such as wheat, rye, pumpernickel, etc. when I ate bread (over 5 years ago). My downfall on the bread was the Hawaiian rolls and homemade bread (I used to be very good at baking bread). I keep some commercial keto bread in the freezer in case I have a craving, that doesn't happen too often. Your testing is very informative and definitely helps me make decisions on bread products.
Carnivoreâs Angel YT channel (Amy Bellinder) has a GREAT Hawaiian Roll recipe and technique that uses real eggs and less egg white powder. Love it!
Just wanted to let everyone know that if you haven't ordered from ChipMonk Baking before, do it! I just placed an order a little while ago and David, I believe he's the CEO, actually sent me a personalized video thanking me for making the purchase. I thought that was so cool and thoughtful. No other company has ever done that before. I have gotten handwritten thank you notes, but never a personal thank you video.
ChipMonk is top notch. They love their customers and they set an amazing example for customer service. Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@SeriousKeto Have you done a test on Chipmonks breads!
@@pawsjo1713 Yes please!
Very interesting Steve. Iâm very appreciative for all you do!
Thank you, Steve. This review is timely as I was planning to try a keto bread from WM.
I have to tell you. I had bought the Lewis Healthy Life Keto Bread 2 days ago. That night I made for dinner 2 slices toasted. Then I spread half of a small Hass Avacado on top. On top of one toast I put scrambled egg and top the other toast with a soft boiled egg. By morning I did not feel good at all. Trying to figure it out I tested my glucose and it was 130. My chest hurt and my glucose stayed at 130 for hours before it started to come back down some...115. I drank 2 glasses of water forced myself to exercise and go walking. My husband walked with me concerned. Then I saw this video and I felt so betrayed by Lewis Co. for using bad ingredients that actually are bad for people. Thank you for caring and help weeding out (false products) as I call it.
Thank You, Bless you and your family.
I agree. This bread spikes my blood sugar more than regular bread!!!! Plus I would rather eat real bread. Low carb tortillas are actually low carb so I assumed these were actually keto also but nope. To think of all the times I overpaid for this fake bread before testing my blood sugar. Now I feel so betrayed.
Always read the ingredients.
I eat 2 slices of the Lewis bread every day. My test was drastically different from yours. Preface, I am 70, type 2 diabetic and insulin resistant, taking 100 MG metforman twice daily. My starting glucose was 114, 1 hour later it was 120 and 116 at two. I don't notice more or less joint pain. I love your reviews and use them when choosing low carb foods.. Thanks for the test, this demonstrates to me that data can be very different with different people and circumstances.
Thanks a million!
I think the metformin makes a difference.
@@suziegrandma I believe you are right. I am happy I don't have to give up my bread because that is the one thing I find hard to give up. Sugar, potatoes & pasta I gave up or found comparable substitutes.
Test after 3-4 hours too.
The spike can happen later.
The smallest dose of metformin is 500 mg, I believe.
I eat 5 slices of the zero carb Lewis bread daily. I've been on Keto for 5 months, and so far I've lost 48 lbs. I'm not diabetic, but I started my journey at 307 lbs. So, I was pre-diabetic. My new doctor did my blood-work and said my sugar is "normal", and my cholesterol is "good". (This was right around Valentine's Day). I think it depends on the person as to how one's body reacts. I admit I use it as a crutch. But, when I started Keto on August 30, 2021, I had someone drop me off in front of whatever store I needed to shop in. If there weren't any electronic shopping carts, I'd call them to come and pick me back up. Now, I drive myself to the store. I never use an electronic cart, and I walk all over the store without needing a rest break.
Thanks for taking one for the team. Most of the ingredients I was avoiding before keto!
And kudos on your pronunciation of âturmericâ!
@@Starfish2145 He must have pronounced it with the ârâ or I would not have commented.
Hey, Steve, thanks for honest testing and enduring the side effects for us! đđŒ
I just saw this stuff grocery shopping YESTERDAY. Took one look at the ingredients list, laughed, and tossed it back.
Imagine making "keto" food and not expecting your keto customers to read the label.
Exactly!
Half the population doesn't have to care about the soy, but I think it gets eggaterated too.
Yeah! I agree with you about the crappy ingredients in keto breads. Waste of $
@@jujuapple6706
I spent a year on strict keto. The homemade bread alts were all disgusting. If someone on keto really wanted bread I'd say go for it. I think the fears over soy are a little overblown. Still problems yes, but overblown.
I hate when the macros donât add upâŠas if we canât count đ€Ł
While I do not monitor my glucose I definitely steer clear of most every kind of bread on the market. The only kind of bread so to speak that I eat are cauliflower rounds from Trader Joe's. Anything with wheat or soy is inflammatory and I Don't Go near it. This video was awesome and just backs up my feelings about it. My body has instant inflammation with any kind of wheat or soy! Thank you so much for this.
I didn't make it past the ingredients but because your the best keto teacher I killed the volume and gave it a thumbs up because I know it helps you like your always there for us .
Great comparison & analysis. Thanks as always, Steve! đ
I'm getting a bit lazy with cooking and I'm not a big fan of chaffles. I know the breads aren't great but for the occasional cheese toasty or blt i don't think it matters that much. Thank you for testing the bread-always good to know the facts.
At this point if I see "resistant" anything on the ingredients list it's an automatic no.
Very informative as well. And love learning how a cgm works before actually purchasing one!
That first one has been my go to. Now itâs a no go.. appreciate your reviews! Thank you Steve
Remember when the announcer would sayâŠ.âdonât try this at homeâŠ.â Thanks for your sacrifice Steve!đ
I'm Type II with a typical A1c of 6-6.5 and tested two slices of the Healthy Life white bread last year. I got a 50-60 pt spike... confirming once again my theory that "resistant starch" is total woo-woo.
Same with me. Carbohydrate = sugar where my body is concerned.
LOVE †YOUR CZcams CHANNEL. ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!!
Thank you for reviewing the Brownberry. It seemed too yummy to be ok for us and now I know! Itâs off of my shopping list!
It always surprises me when something that is supposed to be keto-friendly has wheat as one of the first ingredients. I eat low-carb because I have an allergy to all starches. I would not be able to touch the breads you reviewed. That being said, thank you for reviewing them because now I know not to waste my money on them. :)
This is why I donât buy anything labeled keto. Many businesses will jump in the trend for profit and care nothing about integrity. Your best bet is to eat whole unprocessed foods that are keto
One of the first things I do, since finding out about my food allergies (wheat being the main one and a big cause of inflammation for me) is checking ingredients...never fooled by the hype on the packaging. Keto has helped and IF even more! Here's to your healing journey...love your channel, Steve!
Some keto bread has corn fiber in them
because most keto havers arent allergic
Thanks Steve! I love the taste and texture of the Lewis products, but it really spikes my BG. (BTW I add a little pineapple or orange flavor to the PSMF bread and it tastes like the Hawaiian buns. )
Thank you for this review! It was very beneficial to me.
"That bread's not right." in the Hank Hill voice was awesome, haha! Thanks for the smiles and all the good info!
Thanks for doing this. I didn't even know Walmart sold Keto bread.
Thanks Steve. My husband will eat breads with wheat gluten and I won't. We don't have any of those breads at our Walmart, but I ordered some kiss my keto bread for him to try. Thanks again for the heads up
Thanks for saving me the time of looking at those. Wheat anything causes a reaction and I am having success making the eggwhite protein variations from Indigo Nili. Arrowroot, butter powder, whole egg powder and now the psyllium or oat fiber are all making it interesting as I experiment with which I add and the amounts. I have not ended up with anything inedible and I like the toast test too - if it browns and gets a little crunch factor it makes me happy for a breakfast sandwich or just plain with butter. There are so many companies trying but few are wheat or gluten free (unBun did it but I did not care for the texture of those). I appreciate all the testing you do - I am sure many learn from what you find and can make better choices for themselves.
I am enjoying your reviews. Love your shirt at the beginning. I'm from Sioux Falls, SD. I recently started a keto diet so I greatly appreciate what you are doing. Thanks!
I was a Siouxlander until I went to college in 1986.
I have to be honest with you, the companies who are trying to appeal to the Keto Community, we are concerned about our health, so when you put in unhealthy ingredients, well, a true Keto person just puts it back on the shelf. Soy Oil, Canola, Cotton Seed Oil, etc are not healthy oils !!!
I agree
@@Butterfly-zs2pc so true. I want to have nothing to do with these oils
Once I tried Franz keto bread and had such bad stomach issues I was afraid to try any other bread. I make indigo Nili butter buns all the time. They are so good. Sticking with that right now.
I want to give her recipe a try.
Thank you for testing those! I appreciate the information!
This is very helpful information !; Thank you for doing this on air !!
You have done so many videos on bread that you should make a spread sheet comparing all the data. I would happily pay to done load that. Not that I couldn't go through your videos and do it, but I would rather just pay for it!
I LOOOOOVE white bread. In fact, Im kind of a white bread snob. The Lewis bread that you tried first is so close to regular white bread that I cant tell the difference when on a sandwich. Even tho you got a spike from it, it has helped me lose around 30lbs so far.
(I think the Hawaiian is gross, though.)
Loved âItâs not a tumaâ! Am enjoying bread again since discovering Indigo Niliâs egg whites bread.
You have such a cozy looking kitchen. And thank you for your knowledge.
OMG when you squished it into a ball "like Wonderbread" I relived second grade lunch time. đ€Łđ€Ł
After 4 years of being on a Low Carb Program and losing over 30#s If it tastes too good it probably isn't. Thanks for your Testing and I will avoid these. On another note I would love to see the same sort of test on the Brownie Box mix being sold at Costco...again tastes too good to be good.
Thanks for your input. I do like your first one. Iâm not concerned with spikes just keeping carbs low and love a sandwich and toast to dip my egg yolks in. Also have been enjoying your talks with Scott at Modernest Pantry.
Thank you for doing these reviews !
The Brownberry is called Oroweat where I am. Same exact packaging. I really like it. Too much probably. Toasted with butter and natural peanut butter. Mmm! I try not to buy it very often. Thanks for your reviews.
Me too, that is the way I like it. ..once in awhile.
Steve! I love these type of videos !
Itâs so shady they can legally put 0 net carbs on something and cause that much of a spike!
I am Canadian and donât have focus or keto mojo. Only a plain blood glucose monitor. I am Canadian so I am familiar with Mmol vs the points Americans use. Iâm not diabetic but I think itâs like 4-7 points thatâs normal. Would you have any idea how big a spike in mmol would be considered insignificant vs moderate ? Maybe like 2/10âs of a point?
Btw I pronounce it tumor-ic too. Iâve never heard anyone pronounce the ârâ. Itâs like necklace, very few people say it how itâs spelled. Everyone says neckless.
Glad you mentioned your inflammation. I was tempted to buy but wondered if the wheat was going to set off inflammation in me. Think that's a yes! Great video!
I just tried the Kiss My Keto seeded bread. It was pretty good. Thanks for all your informative videos!
I've made the Indigo Nili version of the Maria Emmerich egg white bread and have come to prefer that for any "bread" needs. These commercial breads are just too expensive with sketchy ingredients...
Yeah, once I work through my supply of Kiss My Keto bread, I'll go back to making the Indigo Nili bread. She's done really good stuff with that recipe.
@@SeriousKeto I love her bread, just bought the baguette and bun molds based on what she has done.
@@SeriousKeto do you add the acacia fiber powder or butter powder or beef gelatin?
@@eagercrafter_9014 the bun mold is great-except sort of a pain to clean. I use it weekly to make sandwich rolls for my husbandâs lunch.
I also use the 2KK protein bread recipe that uses Keto chow Chicken Soup base. Iâve also used the beef soup base with same great results.
I've tried the egg white bread twice with poor results. Next I'm going to try the Indigp Nili version but I have to buy more ingredients. I have more confidence in what she does and it's good to hear others seem to like hers too. Think it's a plan.
Thanks Steve! I've tried all three of those breads and agree with your assessment of the taste. I'm a type 2 diabetic and I got even a higher spike than you - around 50 points.
That's one of the reasons I do these tests. I figure if I spike, it's safe for a T2D to assume they will experience something even worse. Thanks for confirming.
Same here.. 50-60 pt spike with two slices of Healthy Life white.
Another great review! Thanks Steve! I did get the kiss my keto bread and it is really good!
Thanks Steve, always enjoy these tests. I'd love to see you do a test with regular wonder bread as well. It'd be nice to see a comparison between that and the other "keto" breads you've tested.
Should I shoot up a little heroin while I'm at it? đ
I have been making a modified version of the egg white bread and prefer over any store bought. My husband loves it.

You are spot on about the bad oils in the breads, also another really bad ingredient is wheat protein isolate. Any of the protein isolates are excitotoxins, which destroy brain cells. I also don't like the glucose spikes. Thank you for this video, it was eye opening.
What is your opinion on Dave's Sprouted bread for my 86 yr old father?
@@mphsb Hello. The ingredients indicate organic grains but I don't like the canola oil in the Dave's bread because canola oil is another bad oil. The marketing for canola oil sells it as "heart healthy" but it is inflammatory. I would suggest you bake some Keto bread for your Dad. There are so many videos for good Keto bread. The ingredients are so much better for the body - almond flour, coconut flour, avocado or coconut oil. The idea is to keep the inflammation down. My mom is 86 too. She has had type II diabetes for years but keeps it under control via diet and Berberine supplements. She doesn't eat bread at all. I appreciate your asking my opinion SB. I wish you and your Dad well.

I love your videos and this one was really informative ... Thanks!!
Thank you for the reviews! You're my favorite lab test. :-)
I've been Keto for 6 years now and have tried just about every "Keto" bread on the market (and just about every other Keto product for that matter). This video affirms my experience that Keto bread is not a "set it and forget it" Keto food item when it comes to reliance on net carb theory. I've experienced the same with Carb Smart tortillas as well. I tell all people who go Keto to test, test, and test some more when it comes to different kinds of food. Make notes of what works best for you regarding glucose spike management. You will also find that everyone is a little different. What might spike my blood sugar, may not spike yours, and vice versa. Conversely, some foods you think for sure will spike you don't, while others you think are safe do. The same caution regarding net carb theory should also be applied to Keto sweets, in my experience. An interesting variable you could add to the bread tests is take a glucose reading with eating the bread alone, then add a protein to it and test again. I realize that is a sandwich test, but the protein sometimes helps to temper the spike. You may have already done some of this on other videos. Enjoy your content.
Yep, I agree with all of that.
I agree with that. I'm currently more low carb than keto, and started with Atkins over 20 years ago. But, I will incorporate other things when they work for me.
Years ago, Dreamfields pasta promoted themselves as having a proprietary method of suppressing glucose spikes, although their carb count is pretty high. I've tested, and for me, Dreamfields works. But, I still want to try both Steve and Keto Asian's pasta when I can afford the specialty ingredients.
Definitely test, test, test if someone wants to give the Dreamfields a try.

Yeah, the ingredients of this bread is nuts. I unlike you love white bread In fact, I'm on my way to the kitchen to have a slice right now. It took a long time to come up with a bread that really comes close to white bread, in fact, today is a hamburger day and I'm using buns that wendy made for the hamburger bun. Can you interpret the data a bit Steve? Meaning, "the blood glucose spike"? Does that mean you're knocked out of ketosis? I don't have the inflammation reaction to those ingredients and am not a zealot about dirty keto. 2 slices, maybe, in a week, usually on a very Chef'y (Kerrygold butter, fancy deli cut cheeses, flake salt in the butter) grilled cheese with the Lewis plain is next level! Also, do you have a category "Top 10" type of list; like which store bought bread do you recommend? Thanks!
Thanks! Good info. I have pretty much swore off bread for the majority of my keto journey. Lots of meat, cruciferous vegetables abd the like. Every once in a while I will eat a bread sandwich or something, but thatâs about it.

I'm glad the timing worked out.
Since youâre a fan of kings Hawaiian bread youâll really have to make some time in your recipe making to make a combined version of indigo nelliâs butter buns 2.0 adding the flavoring from Carnivore Angels sweet Hawaiian roll video. Makes 8 hamburger buns in that flexible mesh hamburger pan. Youâll be surprised.đ
okay
I didnât think it was sweet at all. Not even close to hawaiian bread. I know many like her hawaiian bread, but I think they have been eating keto bread too long. Not even close. Maybe it just needs more sweetener. Be curious if steve can improve the taste. Even with the pineapple extract it wasnât close. Just a lot of wasted ingredients in the trash again. Kiss My Keto is the best so far as toast, but its not hawaiian.
@@iaayj9114 I added 2 tbs. Of powdered monk fruit sweetener and I used lorann pineapple oil which is very concentrated. Iâd try the recipe again.
Definitely a difference when bread is made by people who actually understand the Keto concept. I have been making PSMF bread. It seems to work for me.
Just found the channel. Love to see more products tested for blood level spikeâs.
As well as taking a supplement along with carbs to see if they help. B1, Berberine, Cinnamon, etc.
thanks.
Thanks for the review. I avoid schetchy ingredients as they tend to cause swelling in my joints. I have been enjoying the modified maria emeric psmf bread. I like indigo nil, ketogenic woman, and 2kk modifications. I guess those breads could be used in a pinch, but i would have to be desperate. Thanks again, love your content.
You're breaking my heart, I love the Hawaiian bread. I'm more dirty keto. Sigh...Oh well to each his own.
Dirty keto it good when you're just maintaining.
I can't remember what bread worked for me 2 years ago!
I don't know what bread to eat now. Help!
Walmart Purchasing Exec: "Please God and Baby Jesus, make Steve misplace his CGM..."
Doing the lords keto work keep it up đđđ
Thanks for the review. We love both of these breads, but we only let ourselves have it about once every 2 weeks. Sucks to see it spike the glucose so much.
Suggestion: instead of trying items with "bad" ingredients in them, how about trying and comparing items with good, natural ingredients in them?
Great information. Iâm impressed with the testing you do itâs very informative. I find all the additives are so not good for me, but love your comments, weird taste on the Lewis bread....not normal taste đ brilliant and make me đ thank you for posting. I canât eat anything with natural flavourings in I come out in a rash and find they are far from natural. Hydrogenated fats and Palm oil also makes me get a rash on my skin. Will be avoiding those breads. Thanks for testing and reporting. đ
You are way braver than I am! Good info especially for those who partake of these items and find they are not losing. Those ingredients are a no go for me as well.
We ordered some!! Thanks for the codeâ€
