- I Paid A Stranger $5 to MASTER My Biggest Song of 2020. The results are quite amazing. Was the $100 Master the best? Which one was the worst?

Me: hmm that sounds pretty much the same
Lionel: starts explaining
Me: of course I concur and noticed since the beginning
I posted this video and then CZcams went down for 50 minutes lol
Nice bro
Yes
ouch
It was horrible. I could see the video but could not click
Occurred to me as well, around 3 PM UTC+3. Code 503 was everywhere.
Which one was your favorite?
In my opinion, it’s number nine.
I liked Kodeblooded's the most.
I have not that good ears.
it's really difficult to compare all of them.
It's making me really tired.
I only know i agree with you for the first one.
I love 9 the powerestudio
#9 ($10)
Yeah- whenever you listen to yourself play, you critique the most. 😔
Lionel pays hundreds of dollars for different masters - 95% of his audience hears no difference...
Probably they will not notice that. But the feeling they gets will be bit different. Small differentiations can make big things. So don't ignore them🙂
Me: trying to figure out things about mixing and mastering
Also me: listens to this on $5 earbuds
Really enjoy watching your analysis of various sound mix engineering works! It is surprising to know $10 charged turned out to be the best one! 👍👍👍
Love your thought process and analytical skills.
You should do these "blind" in the future. The more you know about the costs or who did it the more likely you are to have subtle unconscious biases.
If you could have someone else receive the final products from the master(s) and tabulate them into a single track for you to listen too where you can hear them blind for the first time and *then* rate them without knowing which is which and what each one cost or who it was created by.
Sorry, im a bit of a medical sciences nerd and its super important there. If you patient suspects he is getting "medication" then it can skew your data.
Its the same reason you can setup a listening station with two identical sets of audio equipment and tell people one set is a basic 300$ stereo and the other is a 30,000$ studio setup and a significant majority will agree that the second setup sounds better (even though they are identical).
3:41 xD
Tbh i like his self made one
This man is so underrated.
Great!
Perhaps it was my headphones but some of the mixes sounded a bit to high end and clickily but I agree at your end comment. If someone manages to give me something I'm willing to master my brain goes from that "1 6 4 5 on the guitar was put together in a beautiful way how can we support it" to "How old are your guitar strings and why the hell are you trying to tell me that I should be able to fix it at this point"? I don't master very often mostly because I haven't had a good DAW to use in a long time (Long story) but I've sent files back because of people just expecting me to "Turn up the high end on the bass so it sit's in the mix better" when the basses hadn't changed his strings in 20 years. I was told that boiling them every year kept them sounding new so he didn't need to... I told him that only piano strings can SOMETIMES sound better with age and even then they do need to be changed once every 100 years or so.
Greetings from Colombia
9, 5, 7. Turned out I exactly agree with the conclusion :)
And also 4 wasn't as bad, but after closer listening I understood more why you didn't like it. Still, that's a point beyond which all the rest sit in my books.
Hey can you make more vids if yes thanks and keep up the good work
Ayy I've used Eric Bosley before n I felt the same way, I've always left "leave more sub bass" in the requirements
No dislikes, amazing!
turns out to be 2 dislikes -_-
stop comment like this
Lionel, Self-Master. Indeed, my friend. Indeed.😄
i liked your master better than the first 3 and im using open ears btw
Regular people we don’t know the difference
Thank you so much for making this video
TBH I don't think the production is great in this one, the electronic parts seem disconnected and separated from the piano sound, and I feel like it's not a mixing (or mastering) problem. The growls don't have any weight to them and the drums sound somewhat short, weightless and cheap. The whole song lacks low-mid. That's my take, I'm sorry. :\
But I couldn't have done it better so there's that.
All of that could be fixed with more money. No one's going to EQ, reverb, time the effects, side-chain, etc. for 100 or less. You get what you pay for, and he got a bunch of people who think mixing is just tweaking some volumes and shoving it through a saturation limiter.
Ok so what did you do to it?
Cool
Hey I wanted to ask, what the thing that lights up when you play called?
Something
i think its called Synthesia but I'm not sure.
paying someone to mix a drum loop and a piano part...
Yay early
COOL 👍
I love you 😘
Lol I thought #4 sounded the bollocks
everyone is first until they refresh
Ikr
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think kodeblooded won this won, or the 100$ contestant.
#7 is the best
Did none of them know how to sidechain? Any time you have something like a snare or kick you want to stand out, you side-chain.
If it was a single stereo file they wouldn’t be able to in the mastering stage. More of a mixing technique. Not sure if he sent them all the tracks or just the mix though.

Good point. I mean, I can think of a way. Basically, clone the track, isolate the kick and snare with EQ, side-chain the track, then take an inverted EQ pattern and silence the same frequencies that the clone is playing (so you don't get two bass and snare lines playing simultaneously).
May or may not work, but it'd be interesting to try.
@@manictiger If not, it might be better to use Demucs 4 ft model and actually do so-called stem mastering instead, and if you still need single drums separated use something like FactorSynth.
In conclusion, you needed a better mix XD
Think he needs to pay more. A good mix might take a lot longer, with timed effects, sidechaining, custom EQs, multiple versions, etc.
A lot of these are just people messing with volume knobs and throwing it through a saturation limiter (something like FL Studio Soundgoodizer). It's fast, it's lazy and it has no nuance, but that's to be expected for 5 dollars.
Saturation limiting is something I use maybe half the time, and when it's implemented, it's done so extremely subtly. It's not supposed to be the primary tool, but just something added afterward to make things sound slightly fuller, if that's even needed.
@@manictiger 5 dollars you cant expect anny professionalism obviously. For 100 on the other hand you should be able to find a decent mix including a master if you search seriously. I mean you can listen to their previous work so it should not be that hard to pick the right one and skip the amateurs.
I have done the same and I feel burned...It was a waste of money...
Boo bu-buhhh bu-buhhh bu-buh buh boo bu-buhhh bu-buuuuh bu-buh bu dododo dododo dododo dododo dodo (noise riser)
This makes no sense right ?
I’d rather do it myself. 😂
FIRST
I think I was?
Maybe it was the youtube algorithm
LOL. Anyways, nice to see u also like music 👏👏
Yay
well i think theres some problems in the mixing instead the sound design is way too low and the piano is way too looud compared to it and the sound design u can barely hear anything else than just some high end of it
Im not sure this is the best track to demonstrate the difference in master mixes….
Feel no difference on iPad 😆
