Didn't want the right to vote at 16 don't want 16-17 year olds to have it now. Had the discussion when we were that age and Brexit was happening. The general sentiment was that a notable fraction of us would vote but as a joke (That was vote leave because it's funny)

    • @Minimmalmythicist
      @Minimmalmythicist Před měsícem +3

I agree, I have worked with 16 year olds and like them, but far too many of them don´t have the maturity to vote. There´s a huge difference mentally between an 18 year old and a 16 year old on average, 18 year olds can regulate their emotions much better, they already are young adults.
Yes, there are 16 year olds capable of understanding the issues etc, but they´re a minority and we have to have a cut off point.

@@EarhirX Brexit was a recent event that dominated the discussion of age to vote. Basically when it was happening, young adults were annoyed that older people were deciding their future when it came to leaving the EU.
There was a large turn out of older voters. I actually read the other day that 10% of people who voted leave are no longer alive due to old age.
So the concern is valid. But the answer, doesn't make sense for reasons Minimmalmythicist points out. Mental maturity of 16 year olds is simply not there.
Id argue many 18 year olds aren't either. Anecdotally there is a disparity between maturity in those who goto University and those who don't.

Actually, HS2's main purpose is to increase the capacity of the network, that's a good thing. Votes for 16 year olds must be preceded by political education in schools. We managed (belatedly) to get sex education into the curriculum, so we know difficult topics can be addressed. Once voters understand what they’re voting for and how the system works, politicians will find it less easy to hoodwink them.

The 16-17 bill is excellent as there are currently more older voters than young voters. With this bill, the voting structure will be more balanced and more competitive.

      Formally yes. Factously no.
That is one of the problems in that pseudo-union.
It was always funny to read and listen about all these false and fake arguments (a few did have some truth in it) about E Union. While that other so-called union has been and is conveniently left out of perspective.
      So it is England.

The U.K. have things that make a union more than the eu has.
      For example, a single currency.
The euro is not the currency for all member states.
One single armed forces, and a formidable one if I may add.
      The eu doesn’t.
A permanent seat in the security council with a VETO. It’s a privilege that apart from the U.K. is held by the USA, France, the Russian federation and China. The eu has no such leverage.
The U.K. has a common language, English, but the eu doesn’t.
The U.K. has a parliament that has legislative initiative, but the eu parliament doesn’t.
The U.K. has a Head of State, because the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a Country. The eu is not

I like the label Britisher… which is an Indian term… I am British by naturalisation. No I am not English . I am from a former British colony. Born and bred, but studied in England. I also worked for the eu parliament as a translator sporadically, being a polyglot, my home country is an eu member state. Lived and worked in London for over two decades.
One size doesn’t fit all. For example….
What is good for Spain is not good for Sweden, and what works in Lithuania doesn’t work in the Netherlands…

This video was pretty bad. For most of the campaign, people said Labour had no plans. They came out with a lot of plans really fast that are actually very ambitious. Yes, they aren’t necessarily “new” plans, but from green energy to planning reform to devolution, it’s very big.
