Making Gas Powered Air Compressor

- I always wanted to have a mobile air compressor that would not be limited by the length of the power cable, I decided to build a compressor that would be driven by an internal combustion engine. I used a 160cc motor, 220l/min pump. The motor stops powering the air pump when the required air pressure is reached, so that the compressor does not have to be switched on continuously, the motor automatically starts powering the air pump when the pressure drops.
The battery was connected to the usual pre-thermostat used in connected compressors for 230v. After the pressure drops, the pretostat supplies voltage to the electromagnet which increases the engine speed.
The engine uses a centrifugal clutch that after increasing the speed transmits drive to the pump. It is a budget engine and is not equipped with a charging coil so the battery needs recharging after discharge.
I recently left the electromagnet on because I wanted to know how long the battery can work. After 22 hours the voltage dropped to 10.3v and the electromagnet was still able to work.
Where can I get the centrifugal clutch?

You can use a diode serial connected to engine coil to charge battery.
Why didn't you do a direct belt drive and a gas air compressor unloader valve. That would eliminate the battery and throttle solenoid. Still a great job.

Oh man, such an inspiration. My grandfather used to be like you, there is no thing he couldn't build himself. He did a lot of acetylene/oxygen welding and even helped during building the "Slovnaft" refinery in Bratislava. Although i see lot of things are new after almost 20 years. too bad i became an office rat in my career. Unfortunately he passed away while i was 8 in 1998.. I am very thankful that i can learn from you via these videos.
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! Good camera work. Good lighting. Excellent time compression w/editing. No narration needed because you showed the whole process without wasting time. Good work!!
I really love the things that you make. I actually have all of the main parts for making this compressor right now. A few years back my neighbor brought over one of the small gas powered air compressor that had some issues. It wasn't a lot of money to get it up and running but it was more than he wanted to spend since he picked it up for $20 at a yard sale. It's been sitting next to my garage ever since. After watching you build the bigger tank has now given me interest in building this. That's small one really didn't do anything for me. Most of all my tools need a lot more air than that.
I really enjoyed your video look forward to the next one.
Your techniques show me how to get through the small details … one of my most favorite channels , thanks !
High quality. Professional work.
Thank you :)
Did I miss something here ?
Where is the CONDENSATE DRAIN ?
@@lestergillis8171 did you miss the clip of him installing a ball valve in the bottom?
@@drewlawrence8259 On the FIRST go-around, yes.
I watched it later a second time.
@@drewlawrence8259
Hello, what goes there is a petite petcock, not a cumbersome ball valve.,.....Regards!
Brother, everything that you build is built to perfection!!! Awesome build!!! 👍👍
Thank you :)
@@WorkshopFromScratch þ
@@WorkshopFromScratch hello I would like to know where we buy the electro magnetic
I like the clutch setup, and thanks again for sharing your thoughts and great videos
Great job man! Love the idea with electromagnet! :)
Thank you :)
@@wernerpfeifer But the electric signal could also be used for an electric starter
Outstanding project!!!
Thank you:)
Loved watching air compressor fabrication!! Killer job.
I used to be a welder fabricator, videos like this make me miss it
That's some PRO work! Love the pressure switch to electromagnet to governor idea, and LOVE bigger pneumatic wheels! Cheers mate.
Awesome piece of kit!!! Good job, I just wish I had half your talent for building things. LOL I just see it as plenty of room to grow and learn new skills 😁👍
Thank you :)
Excellent tutorial video. I built one on a locomotive air tank(100-120 gal.) someone gave me. Made it towable and used it on several jobs. It worked great. The only problem was I never figured out the idle control, so I would do it manually. I also noticed with all that equipment you have there is NO milling machine to do slotting and small cutouts. What a budget operation, lol. Thanks again.
Muito bom amigo!
Melhor projeto que já vi!
Parabéns.
Fiquei de boca aberta sensacional
Nice project. "Honey, when will you paint the fence?!" (Green light to play with all tools)
Beautiful work, dude! Really well done! 😃
Thank you :)
this bad boy can easly even power 4 other compressors
I mean, this is brilliant. Genuinely. But, they're lethal in time IF they were to explode. Add to that the petrol. My god. Lol but you know what? Fair play. Completely mobile/strong compressor. So if you're doing outside work? See the handle/bar? You need a half descent solar panel, small charge controller and that battery will never go bad or low. That's the only thing it's missing. Well done sir!
Thanks for the video. I'm currently planning on a conversion on my 35 gallon Craftsman compressor (oil-less). I was gifted a 5 hp Harbor Frieght pump and I have an old 10 hp Stratton gas im going to use.
Nice to see a video on CZcams where the person welding is using proper heat penetration on his work. Great job.
Thank you :)
Real nice I built an electric air compressor before but this one makes me want to try it
that centrifugal clutch is brilliant idea. thanks for sharing!
Thank you 😁
Wow. I am truly amazed. That thing looks professional!! Great job man!!
Very nice job on building the compressor!
Holy heck... I know a 1/3 of the skills you used to make that! Color me fully impressed. That was awesome.
Thank you :)
Hell im a machinist / millwright with 14 yrs in and I’m still going to say “damn he’s good”
I love it!!!! That mesh on the guard is still a bit to open for my liking but apart from that bravo
thank you :) a few things could be improved :)
I STRONLY recommend using some rubber mounts under both the compressor AND the engiine.
This will relieve stress on all those welds down the road.
Excelente compressor!
O camarada manja fala serio🤔🤔
Great job. Gives me all kinds of ideas. I've been looking for a gas engine compressor for my mobile workshop
Thank you :) I am very happy that my video can help :)

Yup I'd say genius , I love it
I’d like to buy one!
@@Beardman56 Great comment! Quick question...why did you watch? After all you seem to suggest your a highly intelligent dick.
Excellent project!!
Thank you :)
One of the best jobs i ever seen, clean and perfect. Thanks bro
Thank you 😁
Sell it for a reasonable price and I’d buy two . Nice project seriously !
Great professional job. A little over the top for average DIY. Worth the time cause these things are way over priced to buy. A parts source ( or at least description) would be helpful. Like tank volume, size n source engine and clutch. Thanks well done video and project.
Thank you :) Under the video is a comment in which everything I described in detail. If you have a problem finding parts, write it, I will try to help you :) When it comes to the construction of the compressor, you do not need professional tools, all you need is an angle grinder, a drill and a welding machine :)
Your videos are memorizing to watch. Nice job. What a talent.
Thank you :)
Nice shop. Helluva vice!!
Great video. High quality make!
That dril bit spinning is so trippy. It just looks like it spins so slooow. But it spins fast
God that was awesome!!! Thank you for posting!!!
Thank you :)
excellent work! you are a true craftsman!
Thanks:)
So inspiring. Watch in the morning for a little momentum .Awesome work my friend keep it going
Świetna robota! Czekam z niecierpliwością na kolejne filmiki :)

Awesome build man I wish I had that compressor
Very impressive just by showing and I figure out how everything works. It would be nice if you had made another video of how it all works and operating for others that haven't got the mechanical background , well done bro , great video
Thank you :) Under the video I attached a comment with a detailed description, please read it :)
Cheers
I like it!!!

You sir are a damn Wizard!
Make It Extreme from Poland? Very nice.
Love to buy one from you .
To perfection! Great idea
Thank you :)
Man who can build almost anything only has 12 feet of air hose and two really short extension leads 😂😂😂 great video mate
How The battery re charge
Thats awesome! Great work!
Thank you :)
Always nice to watch a pro, Jesus nice tig welding. Thank you.
Piękna robota. Mnustwo zadowolenia ze sprzętu. 👏👍
Excellent work! Looks factory to me😉
Thanks :)
Very good job mate!!!!
Thanks :)
Subscribed just for the genius of the project.
That's Badass dude. Nice work 👍 💪
These Russian mechanic guys are so skillful.
That was cool. Much better than a store bought.
Thank you :)
What a coincidence! I have all these tools in my little garage. Riiiight.
Nice! Was wondering the methods for turning off the compressor to prevent issues. Looks like in you're comment pinned you can use a mechanical clutch with an electric actuator or an unloader valve to throttle. Both throttle the engine down below the clutch engagement RPM. Interesting. Thanks for sharing1
This video made my day
Awesome build
Thank you :)
Impressive build from beginning to the end. A big 👍
Stay safe, Joe Z
Thank you 😁
Stick some magnets on the fan and a pickup coil, some Diodes, and the motor can recharge the 12v battery as well 😉
Wow, you have some amazing skills.
Geladeira não liga.
Thank you. Enjoyed your video.
I'm glad you liked it :) Thank you for the comment
Thank you for sharing that brilliant idea you have made. I may copy that design someday.
Thank you :) Of course you can :) Publishes a movie to help viewers build :)
I have all the parts I need to make one, now if I can get some free time this video gave me some good ideas 👍✌️
An idea of genius! I wanted to build the same thing as you. Your way is better. Me I thought to reload the tank and regulate the pressure with a regulator, the valve would have discharged the air to 8 bars and I would have regulated the pressure wanted with the regulator! I watched the video 10 times to understand the electrical part. You brought me a lot of ideas ...
You can improve the system with the solenoid, because it consumes too much 12V 0.8A current: 9.6Watts. Try with model aircraft servo motors or reduced motors.
Thank you for everything and hello from France
Thank you :) This is my first compressor with a combustion engine, so it can be improved, and especially you can install a charging coil in the engine, and the problem with charging will be solved :) I am glad that my film can give you so many ideas and I wish you to implement them :) Regards :)
You can use a much smaller solenoid like i did.
12volt 300ma JF0307B
Damn! I'll buy one of those if you will make it.
Good work! :)
Thank you :)
*Hello the air compressor comportable* 👏👏👏
I just built one of these. Finished the assembly today, but it vibrates like crazy. I have been using the compressor off tank for quite some time, hadn't noticed bad vibration before, but maybe the belt is just too old. My compressor has a mechanical unloader/pressure regulator valve that cuts off at a set point then cuts back in. I may add a throttle control at some point to save a bit on gas, but otherwise i keep it set at 130 cut out and go to work.
yes , i want one ! i have to build one too , thanx
Very nice ! 👍
Great job especially with the prices of petrol compressors there days over $2000 for a small one here in Aus
Gosh , I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while. After watching your video I’m going do it . Thank you
I am glad that the film inspired you to build :) Regards
@@WorkshopFromScratch I'd have a better engine idea. Use a Briggs and Stratton 5hp. They are very good and indestructible motors. Very very nice build 👍👍👍
I applaud you on your skills and ingenuity...but too bad many of us handymen don't have the equipment nor the facilities to make such a valuable piece of equipment...but kudos to you anyway 👍... great job.
Yes, a comfort in the Creative Spirit we all share.
Thank you for making this video, i just tried to make my own and it work, but i have a question,
is the noise from the centrifugal clutch very loud? like a damaged crank shaft?
😅
Mad skills
Now between the compressor and the one way valve install an automotive A/C rad. and a water trap. Makes a miracle and saves you to have that min. 15m air hose. Your mesh inadequate if you can put a finger through - H&S first. Better to keep all your fingers for the next project.
I'll call you when the zombie apocalypse comes. You've got skills :)
Too late it's already here aaaaaaaaawwwwwwhhhhhhhuuuuhh were coming lol
Nice work.
I believe after all that work. I would have done electric start. Connected the starter to the low pressure side & use an a/c clutch system.
Amazing job 👍
Thank you:)
I love the build of this it was top notch and very inventive, but the reason for it seemed silly, just buy a longer hose.
Nice setup man. Now just add a magneto setup to keep the battery charged and a kill switch.
Thank you :) Yes, I have to improve it :)
Bellissimo...complimenti.
