The Great Alt Art crash is on it's way. A time period which we were lucky to live within, though, it seems it's about to come tumbling down.
Alt Arts have been a staple within Pokemon's rebirth. During the Pokemon Boom, all fans alike we're taken back by the new and incredible artworks Pokémon was able to produce.
Pokemon did what they did best, and they created some of the most amazing Alt Arts, including:
• Blaziken VMAX 202/198 from Chilling Reign.
• Umbreon VMAX from 215/203 Evolving Skies.
• Gengar VMAX Alt 271/264 from Fusion Strike.
• Giratina V Alt 186/196 from Lost Origin.
• Espeon VMAX 270/264 from Fusion Strike.
These Alt Arts have all shaped an entire generation, though. It feels we are coming towards the beginning of the end of their historic boom. How long can these prices continue to rise?
They are becoming unsustainable, and eventually, something will have to give in and come tumbling down.
Is now the time to sell?

This situation is a prime situation for anyone who wants to learn how to succeed in investing. The most basic rule is buy when ppl are bearish, sell when they’re bullish and be okay if you miss a boom, don’t fall into fomo. Buying swsh alt arts if you want to make money is so foolish, ppl should be looking at undervalued SV cards at this point. Great video

Gotta start getting into the mind set of buying multiples when the price is low. That way you still have a your own card and can sell the extras and make a profit.

I’ve tried that, sometimes end up stuck with a card I don’t care much about lol. It’s perfect if it’s something you like too though. My problem anymore is that there is always something on my collection list that makes buying multiples difficult.
I believe the train has already taken off for alt arts sword and shield. I'm buying Scarlet and Violet SIRs instead while they are cheap.
My problem with them is QC on them is horrendous. Totally feel you though

I’m focusing on scarlet and violet secrete illustration rares while they are low and a complete collection of them in a few years will be a goldmine
What some of you don’t understand is how incredibly hard some of these cards are to pull … and if you’re lucky enough to pull it you still need to send it out and hope you get a grade 10 ..
It’s absolutely not hard to pull in the grand scheme of things. PSA10 pop is like 14k, these are extremely easy to acquire, and the hobby is not nearly big enough for that kind of pop to be below demand, unless there is a huge fomo wave, which this is. Even 3k pop is ”big” for Pokemon cards, the hobby is still very much in its infancy compred to something like the sports cards etc.
@@grydon6422then try pulling one for less than what they cost to buy as a single and get back to me. I’ve learned the hard way that these cards are DEFINITELY not easy to pull, I don’t care what the population says. Hundreds of packs to pull no big alt art
I opened close to 1000 packs trying to pull the umbreon and never did …. Eventually I ended up buying the psa 10 for $1500

I’ve had some sad conversations with what I assume to be emotional kids ”investing” in Moonbreon because ”it will just keep climbing”, without any sort of brain activity behind the intentions. The saddest part is the common mentality of ”I’m not going to read all that, you’re probably just hating anyways”, after writing couple of paragraphs of some healthy perspective, similar points that were covered in this video.
Some people need to be stung for them to learn
It’s a free market with no base point. The base point is an illusion, it can be very volatile!
I’ve always had the mindset of buy when everyone is selling, sell when everyone is buying. If you buy during the boom you’ve probably already missed the bus. Great content as always!

Don't let the market swings 100% dictate when you buy and sell. Every one of the popular mon alts (v or vmax) are going to he $500+ in 10 years.
Pokemon is here to stay and SwSh alts are the best chase cards the hobby has ever seen. Gold stars were close but the rarity isn't even close to VMax alternates (1/3 vs 1/7 boxes) and the art isn't as good or varied in terms of illustrator.

I bought several of these cards between 4 and 12 months ago. Told myself I was investing but at the same time I love the cards and I’m starting to feel like an idiot for not selling any of them yet…😅

I’m with you on this. You have to be smart with your money in collectables and investments. It doesn’t matter if you have a lot to spend or a little.

So everything that went up like crazy is coming back down a little bit. I started grabbing the low end ones now like Skuntank, Sandaconda, Greedent, Shadow Rider and the likes. I did get lucky to get Carizard for $110, Umbreon V for $76, Rayquaza V for $62 and the Lugia for $125 and a bunch of other deals before they popped off.

Top video! Adding to your point, buying a card for $1000 opens you up to the risk of losing $1000. Potential upside versus potential downside is a losing game to start with. Investing in singles should be fine if you can take advantage of low hype momentum and low potential downside!

Not only is the Ghost Magician and Ghost Magician Girl hard to pull but they're very hard to grade.

For me the biggest proof for that is seeing how much the booster boxes from the SM era appreciated in comparison to the majority of the chase cards at the time which barely held the same value

@@phillips.collectibles around one year ago, people were going crazy for tag team cards.
TCGplayer's graphics are very explicite about that phenomenon and I believe the same thing will happen with SWSH's alt arts.
Demand will eventually shift elsewhere and prices should stabilize.

This is an excellent video. Single cards are inherently risky - those are some incredible numbers from the other TCGs and there are similar stories from the vintage Pokémon boom too. There are times when it feels like a no brainer, and times when you have to pause for a moment. It can also be hard to seperate collecting from investing when it comes to singles.

I have the blaziken vamp alt art. Do you recommend I sell it or I wait for a long time to see if the card continues to grow in value. Do you expect the card to decline over time or continue to rise?

I was working on getting all the alts up until about 3 months ago. I only need 13 more but I'm going to wait to get the rest for now. Luckily I bought the gengar before it went up. And I personally am collecting them to hoard indefinitely. I plan to collect my singles for the forseeable future
Love the rubber band analogy! I agree, singles are risky investments, sealed product is safe and where about 90% of my investment dollars have gone. I feel alt arts are close to if not tapped out for the time being and that price bubble will soon pop a bit. It might be time to clear out some of the slabs that don’t have as much sentimental value and make some $$$ while we can

Another important point to make is that pokemon is not declining. There are tons of people getting into the hobby daily and it wont stop. the demand will rise but unreasonable prices will be more apparent.. love to see more people in the hobby.

Do you think the slow decline of Pokémon go has a flow on impact on this hobby? I think we are at the floor of scarlet and violet now so it’s fun buying cheap Alts for a collection as new player under 40 bucks. Also one/two 151 booster box in to the closet will never hurt.
You don't only need to collect alt arts. there are alot of afforable normal art cards that look really cool aswell.
I picked up this houndoor and scizor art cards for just 3-4 bucks each. You might get 10 art cards for just 1 sir. Or get both haha.
@@newjones1754I think the SIR that look like paintings are king. I have the Alakazam from 151, Skeledidge SIR from Evolved, and looking at that cheap illustration ninetails. All these under my 40 dollar limit on a single card. I just don’t want to collect stuff I don’t like that’s my problem. Because if it does dip I be left with basically cardboard. 😂 I want that 151 SIR blastoise but my fear of a reprint scares me.
Alt arts are an easy flip for me. If you can buy at 60-70%, do it. why not? I bought an Umbreon for $600 and sold it for $800!

Don't like the swsh fomo the prices are getting out of hands. There are alot of cheap cards that i rather get or vintage. Just got the OG Blastoise in my collection.

Speaking of cycles, yeah people get older and move on from collecting. But also, young collectors who didnt have a chance at the big cards, umbreon, gengar rayquza, will also be looking to buy at some point.

I do like your take on this, however I don't know if it's a good 1 to 1 comparison between tcgs. There are other variables when it comes to different tcgs. I do think a lot of values are overpriced atm though. Earned my sub with this video though.

This is happening at the moment aswell in DBS with the Realm of the Gods set in booster boxes and the Vegeta God Rare, currently a 6k card.
Just look at what happened to the japanese market last year lol what a time that was.....
I think the Dragon Ball Goku went down so much was because of the Vegeta God rare. Essentially the introduction to God rares.

Always buy low, and remember there’s nothing wrong with NM raw copies, or even a PSA 9… because collecting everything in a ten is suuuper unrealistic 😭
I agree completely. Don't buy at the high. If you have these sell them, cash in, buy back in 6 months. If they go up at least you didn't lose. Better to be in the green than in the red.

I was the same as you when I realised I should trust my gut more. Your low propensity for risk is genetic. So is mine. You can go past this though continuous exposure. You've said you go in all sorts of TCG so dare I say you don't have a "feel" for Pokemon yet.

Well for starters, pokemon cards are so dirt cheap that you spend hundreds on cardboard and feels like it has no value, that's not fun. When you pull that rare card, it's exciting and worth a decent amount. I feel like a lot off SIR/AA pokemons cards are way under valued and sell way too cheap
Especially when you buy a booster box and you pull a pretty card that's worth $7.99😂
I'm buying alt arts. Almost every single set from SW&SH still as of today have undervalued alt arts for under $24 with low PSA pop.

I got all psa 9s
Rayquaza 400, gengar 340, lefeon 275, glaceon 300 this one is a 10, sylveon 200, espeon I pulled out of 16 mini c22 tins.
I'm using this time to buy graded vintage while others are focused on alts
You can't compare pokemon to any other TCG. Popularity isn't close. That said these alt arts are too expensive. I get why, English quality control is horrible and pull rates are tough. But anyone buying grades cards is a sucker imo anyway. Unless your getting an amazing deal you can't refuse buy raw if you collect. If you're in the flipping profit market GG's. The window for gains has already passed with top cards coming back down. But anyone buying a Gengar for 400 raw is a fool. You can buy a gold star for that. Or many other things. I've contented selling my alts now because prices are so high. I don't need the money either but if the offer is high enough I'd do it.
Magic gets a billion revenue a year. Couldn't we compare it a bit with that?

Approaching £500 in a psa 10 is crazy nevermind 800!! Anything over for a card with no age is just ridiculous!! Umbreon and Rayquaza is different maybe even the Giratina but anything else is just crazy. Like how can a card with relatively low pop 10+ years old in a psa 10 be worth like 400 wich is a high price card but be worth less then a modern card in a 10 high population hardly 3 years old? Not natural grown it will settle a lot of fomo people will lose money! Scalpers and resellers made a killing off our backs again who actually care about pokemon itself.
Some of these newer cards are incredibly hard to pull . I opened 800 packs trying to pull the tyranitar v from battle styles and never pulled it …. So I ended up buying the psa 10 card for $300 at a card convention …
Better looking cards and much much higher demand
