Mick voice is so painful here - reminds me of 2 young people living on the lam - street kids. The dude is telling the girl they've run out of options, no money, no hope...but he still loves her. He tries to cheer her up, but they've got to part ways and survive separately. Definitely one my favorites by the Stones for 50+ years.

When I was young you were asked “Beatles or Stones?” You couldn’t say “Both”. At first I said Beatles. Around 14-15 I started saying Stones. There’s a reason they’re put up there together, which at first I didn’t understand. The Stones were a blues band, then a pop band, then a psychedelic band, then the English Establishment tried to crush them. There was a public outcry, they were released from prison, they hit another gear, and then they had a 4 album streak of spooky, beautiful, hard, no compromises music like no other band has ever had, from ‘Beggars Banquet’ (1968) through ‘Exile On Main St’ (1972). Put on ‘Exle…’ side 1, play the whole album through about 5 times, and you’ll get it.

Angie is a quality single and Goat's Head Soup is a good album, but it follows a run of four of their best albums, capped by Exile on Main Street, which rock critics see as one of the greatest albums in the history of rock n roll. Exile wasn't received all that well by critics at the time and didn't sell that great, producing few singles outside of Tumbling Dice. It has been over time that the world has recognized its greatness. But what we see here is I think the Stones attempt to become more commercial and produce a good selling single, which they succeeded at with Angie.
