  • Never run out of worm castings by running your worm bin like this!! You can do this method in any worm bin to create natural organic fertilizer & soil amendments in the form of worm castings for your garden!! I'll also show you how to make grit from a new source I'm trying & we do a red wriggler worm time lapse at the end with the compost worms we picked up from harvesting.
This video is chocked full of advice on how to manage your bin as we look through what remains of our last feeding & set up the bin to increase the volume and output for these amazing composting creatures!!
Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

Having you kneeling beside it really gave me a good perspective. It's not as big as I thought for that many worms! @05:59 Oh no.... typo! It was fun seeing that extra hand reach in to help when you were picking the wormies out fo the screened material. That was a seriously generous feeding alright :) When I grind up the egg shells I always run it all through a kitchen strainer to make sure it is all tiny particle size... and since eggs have that thin inner membrane that adheres to the shells, I do all the straining of the small particles with a fan blowing so that all that lightweight, dusty membrane material blows away. Kind of an OCD approach to grit prep, I know - hahaha! Presumably, the crustacean shell would not have any of that membrane stuff to contend with - but I would not know. I don't eat anything that lives underwater

I was hoping you had a magic solution, but the glue they use makes the tape fuse with the cardboard. It looks like the best way is cut off the taped areas and recycle that, shred the rest.

No magic here!! I just rip it off which takes most of the cardboard right under it off of it...which now I know why that happens since it is fused!!

    What do you start with?

If we are talking about how to start a worm bin, I've got a few videos that explain the process: czcams.com/video/lFXortM9iY8/video.html & czcams.com/video/g5Sag75OAXY/video.html
It is super easy and once you start about 3-4 months later you can start harvesting the worm castings/vermicompost. I run two other bins besides this one. One is a VermiHut worm tower which produces about 10 pounds of worm castings every 60 days. I have links in the description and the pinned comment if you want to check out prices or order one. The other one is a Tiny Worm Bin which is about 3 gallons (about the size of a shoe box) and produces about 10 pounds every 5 months but it can fit under a sink.
This bin from the video is just two 20 gallon fabric pots one inside the other. In order to start, you can just soak about 3-4 gallons of shredded cardboard & newspaper that have been soaked in water and wrung out until there are just a few drops of water coming out of them. Then you put in a handful of your native soil or even better some vermicompost or regular compost. Then you add your compost worms. I would start with 1000, but 500 is a good start as well. The videos I linked to show you how much (really how little) food to feed. I hope this answers your question but if not I'd be happy to answer any follow up questions. Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
