Hi, just stumbled across your video on the Konghou Harp, it is a very lovely instruemnt indeed. I just wanted to point out something you mentioned about the strings, the strings are in fact made of Steel, wounded with silk, just thought i'd mention that to you. The Traditional Gu Zheng Harp also uses the same type of steel wounded with silk strings as well. The old version of the Gu Zheng harp & the 7 string Gu Chin or Gu Qin used to actually use just plain silk strings, but they changed it back in the 1950's. Then theres the other type of Gu Zheng usaully used in Chiu Zhou music, this old Gu Zheng uses plain steel strings. Modern Konghou strings would be constructed now with steel wounded with silk as is the modern day Gu Zhengs, & 7 string Gu Chin or Gu Qin.

It’s interesting that you mention the hand percussion on the soundboard. This is very common in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian harp traditions.

This was a cool video. Very informative. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around what differentiates a lyre from a harp with a vertical soundboard (though I've heard those terms many times before). The purists always say a lyre is a lute and not a harp, yet they also talk about vertical soundboard harps. Ugh. I think some of that is just classical snobbery, but it always messes with my brain. Ain't nobody got time for that... as they say. LOL. Anyway... this is a very unique instrument and you did a great rundown of it. I think it's cool that you're trying to learn something new. I'm anxious to see more.

It is so confusing! I think a lot of it is just confusing terminology made up by academics studying musical instruments, not really useful "real world" categories (just like how piano is technically a percussion instrument 😂)

Super intro even if your not familiar with it. I would imagine regulating that instrument falls under a whole new level from a harp. Lots of questions in comparison to price, strings (length, sizes availability) repairs from the western world. As even a quality lyre is difficult to obtain. I think the sound is magnificent. Great job Molly. Super interested.

I looked at it for awhile, and thankfully I think regulation is as simple as raising/lowering the bridge pins, but with a lot of small adjustments 😊

It is a lyre, not a harp. Harpists do play near the sound board (pdlt) when required. Even guitarists do that sometimes.

Hi Molly, do you have an email address that I can reach you? I’d like to get some info about your konghou teacher and am wondering if she is accepting new konghou students. It looks like your teacher is in Vancouver and I also live on the west coast of Canada. I also would like to know more about your learning experience… I presume you learn via online, right? Is it easy to learn konghou via online? Thanks very much!

A tip for the vibrato: try to push he string in (up and down) and not horizontally (left and right), it’ll be a much cleaner and pronounced vibrato
