- By popular demand (no really), my tiktoks from last summer introducing you to the Disney Princess Pink Void need a new home where they will be available if anything should happen to the Other App and they can be rewatched without scrolling.

i am glad that sofia got a brief mention, because i too was surprised at her exclusion! sofia the first confirms that all disney princesses exist within the same universe, or at least an interconnected multiverse, and elena of avalor was specifically built to interact with sofia within the same universe. definitely an interesting layer to the pink void!

Honestly i grew up not even knowing the princesses are from movies. i was just like "yeah so this is just that thing thats on girls clothing". i was low-key SHOCKED when i found out they were all individual characters.

After giving it some thought, my idea as to why the Ariel teal dress exists is for unknowning dads to be able to look at the princesses and easily know which one is the mermaid one. Because of course, a big selling point of ariel is that she is a mermaid. But for parades, and meet and greets and character dinners is sort of impractical to have her unable to walk. So it is clear a dress version is needed but that undermines her mermaidness. So the specfic shade of seafoam grenn + the purple shell along the dress clearly indicate to the public who may not be familiar with the character, immediately that she is “The Little Mermaid”. I may have overthought it, but it’s the explanation that makes sense to me 😅

Also, I know I've commented on this on other videos about the Disney Princesses and their dresses, but it's absolutely wild to me that Disney is just sleeping on officially merchandising the princesses in alternative outfits from their animated movies - because really, they could make sooooo much more money doing that to give children and adults the opportunity to purchase their favorite princess in a different outfit that fans might like more than the default! Personally, I remember being obsessed with the silver sparkling dress Ariel is wearing near the end of the animated movie when King Triton finally allows her to become human to be with Prince Eric! That was MY favorite of her dresses! Or with Cinderella, I do love her blue ballgown, but I also really liked the pink dress we see her in before the step-sisters ruin it! It's kind of a bummer that Disney has been so stringent about sticking to the default outfits for the princesses and only selling those (with the only "alternatives" being the casual clothes the characters wear before the big transformation into the ballgowns), because as a kid, and even now as an adult, I would have absolutely loved to own a Disney Princess doll in the alternate gown that I liked more than the default!
I didn't see Princess and the Frog until I was straight up an adult, and I am so disappointed by how infrequently we see her in her Almost There flapper look.
Luckily American Girl is bridging that gap a bit by doing this. They only have two or three princesses but I’m hopeful they will come out with more
I always "read" the Disney Princess Magazine as a child. My sister and I probably had every issue from 2001 to 2004. To me, the category "Disney Princess" always meant young, extremely cool women from the Disney Movies, that were featured in the magazine. That included Esmeralda, but also Jane and Megara
I absolutely adore the Cinderella remake from 2015. I think that it finds the perfect balance between the classic movie and doing its own thing. It has so much respect for the OG movie, yet also makes it better (the prince and Cinderella meet beforehand, etc). It also is just a fantastic movie that is so beautiful and magical to look at.

Its interesting to me that Esmerelda gets brought up in a conversation about feral doll time (tm) because I while I didn't have an Esmeralda doll, I DID have acess to Pheobus, and Boy, Howdy, was that man going through it. My friend's Phoebus was one of the only boy dolls we had between us, so he was constantly torn between the kindness of his true love, Mulan, and the jealous machinations of her evil twin sister, Another Identical Mulan, and the poor idiot could NOT tell the two of them apart.
...Disney's beloved brand integrity had no place in my house.
I’m listening about Ariel in pink, and it hits me because my mother is a natural redhead. There was a time in society with my mothers age that redheads were not allowed to wear pink. Do we think that that affected why Ariel was not in the pink dress for the merchandise?
like I distinctly remember my mother saying she wasn’t allowed to wear pink as a child because she had red hair. “Redheads can’t wear pink”
I believe its less of "Redheads can't wear pink" but more of a "Redheads don't look good wearing pink" that created the whole myth in the first place. And yeah, I can definitely see why Disney would avoid giving Ariel that color because of those reasons.
However, I believe they changed it to match her tail more for recognizability, after all, when you think of Ariel, you think of her mermaid form.
They also assigned Pink to Aurora, so some might've thought that the colors were "too similar", even if she has a very similar color to Jasmine.

When people talk about Merida being "svelteified" if you know what I mean, I notice people always forget. SNOW WHITE WAS ALSO SVELTEIFIED. Watch the original movie, she had a realisitic body type. Initially Snow White's princess art was pretty accurate, but soon after they thinned her out. She actually started getting thinned out in rerelease posters for the movie, then the princess franchise, and then in actual cartoons: Sofia the First, Ralph Breaks the Internet, etc.?
Also thanks, I hate when they call Maleficent a remake. Just because they redo one of two scenes from the cartoon doesn't make it a remake. It's an alternate universe fanfiction. Cruella isn't either, it's even less connected to 101 Dalmatians than Maleficent is to Sleeping Beauty.

I also remember in the early 2000s- Disney princss magazine, specifically the muan issue where she wears red on the cover and GOLD in the poster you coukd take out and hang on your wall.

When I was a little girl my younger brother and I had a game in which Barbie rejected G.I. Joe's unwanted advances in increasingly violent ways. Think Pepe Le Pew but the cat he fancies roundhouse kicks him to the moon.
I have to be completely honest, Raya should not be in the Disney Princess lineup, because she sticks out like a sore thumb, because Disney have made their other Princesses blend together seamlessly, even though they’re from different films and generations of Disney, but in the case of Raya in the lineup, she looks like someone decided that she should be there, so they took a Still from the movie and edited her in, and when you remove her from the lineup it looks better. (Also, her storyline isn’t one that children should learn from, as she’s basically forced to trust others, instead of actually learning how to trust others, so it doesn’t seem like a good lesson to just blindly trust everyone, because that is how you get betrayed)

I think that, it would be cool to see Disney female protagonists, that aren’t in the Disney Princess lineup, be put into their own group so that they’re not forgotten about, then characters like Raya don’t have to be forced into the Disney Princess mould, when they can be put into a Disney Heroines lineup instead.
The Esmerelda vs Jasmine type of thing is actually something I was thinking about recently. I think there are a lot of examples of it. Probably the intention is that it's disavowal: implying that ---ualization is bad by making the villain responsible for it. But, y'know, at a certain age kids are gonna be drawn to it.
How does Sofia the First fit in this because she can summon The Princesses? I think they might have interacted with each other during her show before Wreck it Ralph.
She did but I think it was one princess at a time. Not all together such as Wreck it Ralph.
Man, I was always that kid (late 90s, early 00s) who went to the parks all the time and felt BETRAYED by the lack of Mulan merch. I would flock to the Princesses store and get all excited every year bc I was always CERTAIN that they would finally "remember" to include Mulan in the merch. But no, it was always the Big 6, and I would just walk away disappointed and with no new dolls or dresses to speak of.
And when I say always, I do mean it. I only owned one bit of Mulan "Disney Princess" merch, a 2001 doll my mom found at one of the parks. I wish I could say I loved that doll, but the reality was that I was always let down by how little I felt it actually looked like Mulan, even as an eight year-old.

Well, they were sort of goody two shoes, but they were also extremaly kind and caring. So I actually think they would patch the bruises of the younger ones, and make tea, and won't be that annoyed really.

When it comes to Disney, one of my biggest gripes is I wish Disney would put the cgi down for a second and just do more hand drawn animation, I'm so tired of soulless same-face cgi 😞
When it comes to Disney princesses specifically, I wish they'd stop excluding my top favorites; Pocahontas, Mulan, and Merida. I kind of make a game out of it every time we're in a store and see something Disney princess themed, did I win Disney bingo with the inclusion of at least one of my top favorites?? No? Ok. It's a bingo if it's at least one of my top favorites who are always excluded, it's a dang megamillions jackpot when the merchandise somehow includes all three of my favorites, plus Aurora. I don't think I've ever hit jackpot 😂

That line perfectly sums up how I feel not just about modern Disney Princess marketing but also how I feel about so many products and social expectations aimed at girls and women today. I love that we can celebrate girls who deviate from the standards of traditional femininity, but it's so apparent that we're only allowed to deviate so much and this expansion of the boundaries only makes them feel more omnipresent.
This also really taps into my strained relationship with labeling my gender identity, as often when I justify a "reason" I don't feel like a girl I worry I'm the one shoving womanhood into these boxes since "women can be anything so you have no excuse not to be one. why does that make you so uncomfortable? are you sexist?" when really I just don't feel any attachment to my gender at all

I've seen a lot of infighting within Native American communities on Disney Princess Pocahontas. Some agree that it's best she's forgotten about and shelved, others argue that despite the problematic representation it's important she stays because it was the closest that young native girls got to an awesome role model that was like them.

I have the same visceral reaction you have to Ariel's pink dress replacement, but for Aurora's blue dress becoming pink. I was still a kid when I remember first noticing Aurora basically always being in pink and I HATED that with a passion 😂 I also feel like all the color replacement was completely unnecessary. But surprisingly, it seems that the current princess illustrations are actually finally going back to the movie dresses? Ariel seems to be very consistently in her actual pink dress from the movie, and while Aurora is still very frequently in the pink dress, I've seen the blue dress appear a lot more often too. Even Cinderella I feel like is often getting a very pale blue, skewing towards more whitish grey (cause there was a point Cinderella had a very vibrant blue that had nothing to do with the movie). Overall I hope they continue going in that direction of being more faithful to the original movies

I forget what happened to them once we moved,but I used to have a collection of almost all of the original 13 disney princess dolls.Most them were unopened and kind of just sat in my closet and collected dust😅I don't know what we ended up doing with them but it's been about a year since we moved and I haven't seen them since.🤔
I'm only halfway through, but I think you're missing an obvious theory of Esmerelda's demotion: the executives felt that she would get confused with Jasmine. I'm too young to remember the early 2000s... but my memory of the 2010s is that two brown women with totally different hairstyles and outfits would be seen as redundant in a way that two white blonde women in ballgowns wouldn't.
I have no seahorse on this race, but as a child my Ariel toy wore her blue town dress and I just adored it. Maybw its because Ive bever been a big, blingy dress kind of girl, but the simplistic, sailor-esque look is just perfect for me.

I wonder if Frozen needs to lie low for a while until the nostalgia for it cycles back again. But also, separating it from the Princess brand limits its diversity and also blocks it out from millennials. I’m a Belle/Ariel/Jasmine girlie. I haven’t seen Frozen because it was SO big with the 3-year-olds at the preschool I worked at when I was 32. It’s very much Not For Me in that sense, and separating it from the Princesses makes it weirdly harder to watch it through my childhood mindset.
As a kid I liked Princesses but I hATED the pink void. I hated so much that they didn’t interact. I liked the gold era because at the time even with them staring off, they seemed connected.

1:50:21 I think something that contributed to this shift is that younger girls are ‘growing out’ of playing with their dolls a lot sooner than past years. Even if they still like dolls they shift towards collecting rather than playing so having a Barbie like affordable play doll is probably less relevant. Collectors will go straight to the source for the quality screen accurate collector doll and the Hasbro dolls are perfect for the 4-7 (ish) year olds who still play with dolls.

I'm very curious to know what your thoughts on all of the Disney Princess DVD collections they had. I was at that perfect age where my Nana and I would walk into my local Walmart's dvd section and just pick out the latest dvd collection they had released and watch those to death. I haven't watched them in a long time, but I remember they would have the princesses talk a little before introducing whatever was next on the dvd (an episode from one of their shows or a clip from one of the sequels) and in their Christmas Collection they had two music videos where they performed a rendition of "Twelve Days of Christmas" and an original song where they were performing on stage with each other. I think they also had a birthday/party dvd where they had a bunch of interactive games. Do you think those act as a proto-Wreck-it-Ralph scene?
There was also their video game that I loved as a kid, Disney Princess Enchanted Journey, though in that one they never interacted with each other.

He is the hero of the story who unobjectively wins in the end, one of his parents dies, he wins over the love interest in the end, he has spunky animal companions, you can brush his hair..... I could go on!!!!

tbh i feel like raya in the lineup is just kinda random, HEAR ME OUT! bc u have all these like acrhetype looking princesses with like their dresses and bright colors and raya just kinda just sticks out like a sore thumb same thing with Anna even tho shes technically a princess she just doesnt give very princessy vibes especially with her gown just very plain and casual, and elsa too sometimes but even so, her being on the princess lineup makes more sense than Anna and im on the fence with moana.
