I'm guessing this is being done because: 1) you're working alone, 2) there's going to be walls finished pretty much immediately after inspection. 3) The main service to this sub panel is locked out because the super doesn't want one section of construction killing another one.
Outside of all three of those situations, I think anyone taking this as general advice because the situation isn't explained, will put themselves and others at risk doing this. Having the panel be in line of sight to everything you're checking and making it clear that you "see the lights, then disconnect the loads and then disconnect power" would keep most of the negative comments away.
Remember that giving any advice other than referring people to codes is risky from a liability point of view.

Just install a male 3 wire plug on the end of a 6 ft length 14-3 cord , wire your other end to your panel and simply "plug it in"... "Keep" the cord for future similar needs... Always keep stuff that makes your job more organized....

Tell people what a hot check is and why it’s safe, otherwise this video is going to spiral out of control with negative comments from electricians. Don’t ignore legit questions but insult others by saying “it’s a hot check call an electrician if you don’t understand.” It just makes you sound like a serious a-hole since very few people are actually learning anything from this video.
