- Pectus Excavatum is a congenital condition that affects the sternum and ribcage which makes the center of the chest curve inward. At Children's Hospital Colorado, we offer the Nuss Bar procedure, a minimally invasive surgery, which can restore volume to the chest, and increase heart and lung capacity. Learn more about the Nuss procedure in this animation, including how the surgery is performed and what to expect from recovery.

I had this surgery when I was 14, bar removed when I was 19. I highly recommend it. Changed my life. 28 now and you could never tell
apizzaparty just a question do you notice the bar inside of you?
Marc Gaspar honestly no you can’t really tell
apizzaparty do you remember how much it cost?
How much did it cost?
Yes, just uncomfortable walking with this plate in the chest.
They put it to me 1 month ago.
Hah, I remember how I screamed in intensive care and in an X-ray room.
I just got this surgery done about a week ago and rn all that bothers me is going to the bathroom. The surgery is a bit painful and annoying at first but trust me it is all worth it. Whoever is having this surgery, trust me you’re not alone. We’re all in this together.
huh, my biggest problem is getting sleep, my back is still bent out of shape from the hospital bed
Guys i have some questions about the surgery. Are you able to go to the toilet after you wake up from the surgery? When i get used to the bar will I be able to workout again? Did u noticed gaining any weight after the surgery? Thanks in advance
@@ccbax9897 I can only answer 1 of your questions and that is the first 1. So for the first like 2 days I think it was they have this small tube in your well your private and the other end is attached to a bag but after the first day or 2 you will be able to use the actual toilet.
Man I’m getting it soon during summer wish me luck
What was your age at the time surgery?
I currently have the bar in. Only about a year left before it goes. I am so thankful for my doctor and the military for paying the costs.
Yangc 350 how’d you get the military to pay for it?
Eric Jimenez Tricare insurance covers the costs as long as the condition is moderate at least.
I got it too atm, I live in Austria btw... I will still have it for 1 to 2 years... But until now, I'm feeling well :)
What Thank god i saw this comment , were you in light duty , can you please give me some details cause im the military too
How long were you under anaesthetic
people don’t actually realize how insecure you can feel from this and how many clothes are limited from this. can we start a gc for everyone struggling? my friends don’t get it 😖
Same bruh let’s start a gc fr

Yessir
Yes a group chat sounds epic
Yessss 💀😭
I was born with that condition and suffered from low selfesteem as well as from endurance issues like short breath and passing out while running. Doctors always told me "we don't recommend surgery since it is a huge medical intervention". Kept on struggling until I was 26. Then I eventually stumbled across a "new method" which was only practised by a few doctors here in Germany at that time. Got the surgery done and, apart from the the pain that became my companion for many months, I felt such a relief! A few weeks out of the hospital I put my endurance to a test and went for a run - 8 kilometers without passing out where I hardly managed to run 1 kilometer before. I'm 44 now and never regret it. I transformed me into a new person.
I feel sick watching this video. Knowing I might need a surgery like this one day.
Lurox exercises to help it can fix that
I was also watching this and I was like hyperventilating
I'm watching this one month after getting the surgery lol
@@inferno5755 How much did it cost?
I’m getting the nuss procedure in 4 days, I’m 21
My 18 yr old son just had the surgery one week ago. He smiled when I showed him a picture I took of the result while I was with him during post operation. He asked " is that me?" the nurse and me both said " Yep, that you!"
Hey anyone who’s planning on getting the surgery, for me the most painful part was sitting up after the procedure. Try laying flat on your back, tuck you knees into your belly and roll forwards. (Kinda like a cannonball). This saved me a lot of pain.
Good luck to any else getting the surgery, it’s worth it:)
I had it last week, it was such a pain 😭
i have them 2 & i dont take off my shirt when im with my friends coz its really embarrassing 😢😢
Me too 😀
I think it's fine. Anyone should accept everything since it doesn't affect them. Otherwise you're with the wrong type of friends.
Same here dude, especially when swimming
Ye But is kinda a flex tho I have it
i have the same chest problem but i fixed it with training my chest muscles and it worked
For anyone wondering. I had the surgery done 6 months ago. I’m 17 so that’s usually the cutoff. I’ve had it my entire life and it was something I was self conscious about. The Haller index was 7.1 so you can image how deep it was. They had to put in two bars and I had to go back into surgery because they messed it up the first time. I’m fine now and I accept how I look. It will not immediately fix everything about your chest and body. Now that I am able to I have been working out 5 days a week. Im getting better.
I recommend getting the surgery if yours is as severe as mine. Im glad I did it. I don’t think it wouldn’t been possible to fix naturally.
For me it was a lot of pain. I woke up as soon as they were done and starting rolling me into the room. It is a lot of pain. So just be ready for that.
You will be okay tho.
I'm 15, just had mine a week ago. Pain sucks and I only got one bar. I am writing this in bed and staying home from school. I have never really been self-conscious about my chest until about a year ago one of my friends pointed it out while we were in the pool. Seeing the change after the surgery opened my eyes to how bad it was. If anyone is reading this, the pain I'm feeling now is temporary, but I won't be self-conscious about it for the rest of my life. Reject weakness and embrace discipline!
@@PolarVRhow is it now?
my family never made me feel different. Only realizing it could actually hurt your cardio and breathing.. i seriously was never aware people had stigma towards this.. I never tried to hide it or even considered it, i wonder now if it freaks people out when they see it for the first time. The way your family treats you can totally save you from so much. I'm grateful I had a circle of good people around me because I'm really shocked most people in the comments felt judged and insecure about it. I personally like the appearance and felt unique for it cause I was the only one of my siblings who had it, but I'm disappointed it could harm my lungs' capacity and heart, i hope my case is mild and can be compensated for by exercise. By the way, beauty standards will always change, I know it's difficult with all the shallowness in the media/schools/everywhere, but try to form your own standards as much as you can, change your circle if your current one is judgmental or shallow, have some independent thinkers around, you don't wanna be run by sheep, it's ironic i know! but beauty was never objective nor will it ever be if history is a decent indicator of the future.
This runs deep in my family both of my older brothers chests go really deep and the same thing has started to happen to me. When i suck my chest in its really visible. I don’t want to get surgery I’m only thirteen. To all the people with severe cases i send you love.
People have always told me to take deep breaths and it’s so frustrating when I say I cant
I play football (soccer), and I feel like I cant take deep breathes, do you feel the same when doing sports?
Mason Kearin yea I did
You should look in to the surgery it helps me breathe a lot better
Mason Kearin yes, I have to take very short breaths. I’m not sure if it’s because of this or if it is because I’m not very fit.
same I've never been good at deep breaths guess it has something to do with it
@@masonkearin8803 I play football ( soccer ) too but I don't feel anything I told my parents about the surgery idk

@@muhammadridho7680 It is possible for this to happen with this condition . If it causes problems with your health it is possible to consider surgery .
I had this Nuss procedure surgery as well as the Ravitch procedure about 3-4 years ago, currently doing awesome was worth it.
My sister (yes even though it was common for boys than girls she had to get the surgery) she had to get surgery when she was 13. The doctors are going to get it out next month! She will be able to go on rides and other stuff she couldn't get to do with the bar! Oh i think we will have so much fun after her recovery. I'll give her a few weeks or days after the recovery, just in case it still hurts.
I HAVE THAT omg i have alot of chest pains and shortmess of breath

Did your breathing get better after surgery? I had my surgery 1 month ago and still can't take deep breaths, it feels just the same as before :(
Who Can speak with me about this ?
very nice animation, i am a 21 year old male, i had one of the most severe cases, my haller index was 7.2 and my heart and lungs were being squished. Nuss wouuld not work so my surgeon did the rabitch procedure(cutting and getting rid of the bad cartilage and rebuild the whole chest wall), he also inserted a bar to reinforce the sternum, is been 2 years and i am getting the bar removed in 2 weeks. My breathing is better now and I live in Florida. Bad thing is i have a huge scar but does not matter because i feel better.
Im glad you are feeling better i don have any difficulty breathing but i have mitral heart regurgitation and i have the look of this thing idk if its this thing that i have or not i do have a small dent in the middlle don know if its pectus or i have a normal chest
Impressive. mines really bad too, gives me shortness of breath and fatigue especially in hot weather.
Same! I had a rare case of having both excavation and carinatum. I'm always looking for people who had a similar experience to me. I had the bar which didn't work. So had the same modified surgery you had! Really big scar but faded now (6 years later) I didn't have to have a reinforcement bar though as the surgery worked alone. I am so thankful my doctor did it! Only I know I even had anything wrong.
Not to mention the bar surgery wasnt done well (first doctor) and for a few years part of my lung was trapped which they only found out about when doing the second surgery. Having a good doctor is important!
Haha no way man i got a 7.2 as well. I think the number was a bit high because i purposefully didn't breathe in all the way during the ct scan (the higher fhe index the more likely i thought it was to be covered by insurance lol) because i assumed I'd be right around that 3.4 where surgery is covered. Turns out im past that by a decent margin. Id assume in a more legit scan I'd score like a 6 tho
This video made me feel so much better thx
I have an inch of Pectus excavatum , I always look skinny and can never really have a big chest . I either have to get surgery or work out super hard ..

I did this procedure last week!
I am from Germany, I am 15 years old. And in July I have my Pectus Excavatum operation using the Nuss method. I am also a bit scared of the operation, especially about the thoracic epidural. I am an active athlete and hope to be able to do sport just as well or better afterwards.
I will tell you about it when I am finished in 6 months.

bro im so insecure about it. ever since someone said something about it, i havent taken my shirt off or go swimming at all anymore
I was they same way but I got it fixed and it was worth it
Feel you on that one, didn’t really pay any mind until someone pointed it out, now I make it a thing to never let anyone see me without a shirt
Haha in middle school one kid would always rebuttal me in arguments with "well whatever you have a hole in your chest" which hurt then but retrospectively is kinda classic. In hs it got worse for me internally tho, and the icing on the cake was my bizzarely attractive 6'3" genetic lottery winner friend seeing it for the first time in what i had felt like was a trusted/safe space (that being me him and another close friend) and he says "bro wtf how are you even alive". He meant it as a joke but that was the last time i took my shirt off around people for over a year and now I'm just a couple weeks away from the operation lol
I have this from my childhood and always think that it's normal. In my family every 3rd person have this and all are healthy. Even i am healthy and don't want a surgery i know my chest doesn't looks good but i accept it as a identity. So if you have not any pain and bad symptoms so never go for surgery.
I have a moderate case of it and both my brothers have it very mildly. I used to be self conscious about it, but more so about my flared ribs; I find that good posture and puffing my chest out some helps when I take my shirt off. I have to train twice the amount on my chest with weights to make the pectus not as noticeable and I do a lot of rib flare exercises, they actually work! Remember you won’t be as judged as much as you judge yourself, stay dedicated!
I am a 33 yr old from India, i have a similar condition which is pretty severe. But I do not have any difficulty in any physical activity. It is kinda confidence shattering thing to have but i have learnt to live with it. This condition runs in the family my father also have a similar structure but my brother doesn't have it this severe.
i have the same chest problem but i fixed it with training my chest muscles and it worked

Sgouba what kind of exercises did u do?
What workouts should I do to get rid of it
@Sgouba How long did it take and does it look normal or less noticeable?
You didn't fix it. It just isn't so obvious anymore and not really visible. And you probably don't have a severe case. Those with severe cases are very deformed.
You just probably have a mild case
I'm so self conscious about mine.. I hate it!
I also have this problem but this video helped me alot.
Great information 👌
22yo guy here
I always feel very embarrassed when taking off my shirt (minor condition), also because I have a lot of moles
I train regularly and I'm starting to feel more confident after adjusting my posture and accepting the way I am.
Life is too short to worry about what others think. Everyone has problems and insecurities.
Some cultures find moles very pretty. They can be called beauty spots
So you didn't do the surgery? I don't want to do it, I want to find a simpler way to hide my flared ribs, does gym help?
@@CameraMan60 ofc it helps when u have bigger chest. And chest looks bigger anyway because of this. I have it but it's not really serious case and doesn't mess up with mx regular breathing and I personally wouldn't get surgery just because of it

I don't know if anyone is gonna see this but having pectus makes swimming with friends very hard. Since in in tx swimming is almost needed in the summer and when i go to the local pool there is not a time where i dont get looked at or asked what happened, some people even say "i feel bad for you" i still am positive but theres not a day where im not insecure
Guys, we don’t need to be insecure about this. It makes us even more unique. Just jokingly tell people that you got punched really hard. They’ll laugh and you’ll laugh and they won’t think much of it. As long as it doesn’t affect your breathing or other functions, I think surgery isn’t necessary. I’m 17 now and noticed this when I was about 13. At first I was insecure but then I realized that I could either accept it and make the best out of it or dwell on it and stay insecure. Embrace it, guys.
U look lean or fat?
Hopefully you can carry that positive confidence into middle age. At 55 and into fitness, I wish I had surgery in my 20's when considering it. It had been the number one detrimental thing to my confidence since about 7th grade.
People always tell me I’m skinny but actually my ribs are more visible cause of the pectus excavatum...The only problem I’m seeing with my condition is that usually when I stand up, I can’t see anything for about 5 seconds (so I feel dizzy) and also my heart beats soooo fast when I run. I was born with funnel chest and if there’s a girl who’s done this surgery, PLEASE reply (I’m 17)❤️
Awh.. I wish I could help... I'm a girl too and I was supposed to get tests for the surgery a few weeks ago so I could get the surgery in June. Because of the coronavirus, I might not be able to get the surgery for another year (Because recovery can take a month or two and I would hate to be out of school that long). If I get the surgery, I'll definitely tell you anything you want to know. Sorry for not being as helpful as you probably anticipated 😕
River Streams that would be great cause I really want to know how painful the recovery is and if it’s worth it...wish you the best of luck❤️❤️

I have this... I weighed 110 pounds. I knew I would get surgery for this after my insurance finally decided to cover it after many scans and referneces to doctors. My surgery is scheduled for the 31st of this month (Jan 31 2020) I knew 6 month in advance (since June 2019) that I would get surgery. I decided to push myself and see how much I could grow before then so during these last 6 months I started dieting, eating a lot of healthy calories, emphasizing on protein, also taking a mass gainer almost daily (serious mass is the name) and gyming at least 3 days a week and I am now 140 pounds. 30 pounds in 5 months... could have been more if I truly pushed myself and didn’t slack here and there but... now ima have surgery and I know once I recover I’ll be capable of even more... but yes u can gain mass it’s just tough man. Hi , and for the flared ribs there is another surgery to fix them ? Or what
Gym can fix it
Doctors can slightly "shave" down the fronts of flared ribs, if it is extreme enough, I read a couple years ago.
In just a few months, I will get this surgery
Hii
Kya cost lagta hai
It sounds terrifying... but I feel like it would help my health and self esteem
I found out I had this when I went to a doctor. I asked about the surgery and he explained it to me and said it can be dangerous. He said that some kid did the surgery and the bar hit his heart. I don’t have a severe case, I have a a small cave inwards. Does anyone know what are the chances of a surgery going bad or if it’s common with this type of surgery?
Same hear.😔
Damn I’m scared now, what happened to the kid
I don't have it deep at all and I don't have any problems breathing other pain but I don't know what to do
dangerous if the doctor is incompetent
I have this and my friends think its cool to have it, so don't be embaresed about it
im 19 its hella embarrassing for me 😕
I had this surgery done about 6 months ago any questions are encouraged ask me anything and hopefully I can help.
That Guy 1. How much did it cost ?
2. Does it hurt a lot after the surgery ?
3. How did you go about asking to get the surgery ? (I have no idea where to start I’m from the U.S. Illinois)
I really wanna know how long it takes to get the surgery. With it being the start of summer I want to talk to my parents about getting the surgery so I don’t miss any school. I’m going to talk to my parents tomorrow and see what they say
Honestly I think the reason it's "more common" in boys than girls is because the dip is mistaken for cleavage. With boys it's a clear dip in a flat surface.
I'm a girl with this and my self esteem is pretty low. I would love to get this surgery but I heard that it's quite expensive and I live in the UK.
My family isnt rich but it isn't poor either.
I got an operation years ago, on the NHS. Stigma was probably less as I'm a guy, but was still really depressing. Go to your GP and explain how down it makes you feel, they should do it, you'll just have to wait on the list a while. My operation was over 20 years ago, so things were a bit different. Good luck
Look into it. Maybe just go in for a consultation. I spent 18 years thinking that EVEN IF there was a surgical fix, it would be plastic surgery and therefore paid out of pocket. A few months ago i met w a specialist, and almost immediately he confirmed insurance would cover it. Its like 65k total but less rhan 2 thousand after insurance (around 1k for us because we have rlly good insurance). Even if it doesn't go through, might as well try. Everyone deserves to feel confident
@@memsybabe Does NHS provide surgery for free if u feel depressive & don't have a functional issues due to that
@@patriotstimtebow4295 how u got insurance?? Was u case severe or needed a surgical fix?? becoz they usually don't give insurance for milder cases
I'm not skinny at all and I have it and I don't have no breathing problems or chest pain or nothing and I'm very fit and I play sports.
i feel relief knowing that this i not fatal for my toddler.
as soon as he is age 8-12 get him surgery best age to do it and fastest recovery as it will increase life expectancy and quality of life
I'm 17 and I've been going to the gym for 2 years now.
Is it still ok for me to get the surgery?
When should I remove the metal bars?
Has the hole narrowed down a bit since you've been going to the gym for 2 years?
2 years... seems like eternity for me.
In 17 too, and i think i Will do the surgery
Kevin Pesantez yea I did it a 13 bc they said it was gonna be easier for me but get the surgery if u can
I had the surgery done when I was 17 and I'm getting it removed around 20
Also the stabilizer side hurt more for me
ZachHD lot of pain? How would you describe it?
Yes! I found this the bar was fine but the stabilisers were very uncomfortable.
It’s sucks that i have pectus excavatum and cubitus valgus at the same time, i wish that one day i could have a operation for my chest and elbow.
i have this but in a very light or like in the mild picture.. I work out since i was like 12 or 13 years old...And my chest actually looks better because of this.. But i didnt know that there was moderate rare causes of this...
