Honestly. I love Film Theory, but I'm hardly a loyalist. I don't watch them all. This one got me to click on it. I mean, who doesn't love Whose Line?
I can't think of a duo more iconic than Ryan and Colin. Those two together can bring a house down from the sheer force of laughter. Whose Line has always been a fond memory for me.
I didn't expect "everything was made up, but it *did* matter" to bring actual tears to my eyes, but here I am blubbering away. Never realized this show meant that much to me.
I love how MatPat is just doing whatever he wants for the final episodes. So cathartic!

the fact that Drew made Ryan not win more episodes just so he could play with his friend at the end of the show is really wholesome
Sometimes I felt Ryan won on days he wasn't in the mood and they ended with hoedown so he did have to do it, but ultimately the producers loved to see him suffer.

I went to the final taping of Whose Line on 2/1/2023 and two other tapings before that. I snuck some video recordings and pictures during the final taping knowing it'd be the last time, so I can keep it as a memory forever.
In case you're wondering, the final taping covered S20 episodes 11, 12, and 21 with Brady, Magnum, Mochrie, Stiles. I also had a suggestion that was performed with Kaila Mullady but it seems it got edited out in the episode but I can clearly see myself in the audience in the three episodes!

That idea of passing the torch is wonderfully happening in a lot of ways, such as shows on Dropout which carry on the themes and have even included Wayne as a guest. (If you haven't seen it, he was on an episode of Make Some Noise creating songs that definitely wouldn't have made it past tv censors, it's outstanding)

My family used to watch this show every Thursday night growing up. A couple years ago when I was stuck at home with a significant health problem for 5 weeks, I found Whose Line again on HBO Max and it helped me through a difficult and depressing time. Thanks for covering this one, MatPat. Much love.
I watched a lot of Whose Line as a kid (probably too much since I was barely a teenager at the time lol), and I remember a couple times after a really bad day at school or a really bad mental health moment I’d put CZcams compilations of Whose Line on to cheer me up

Whose Line is one of the absolute greatest comedy shows ever made and it truly spans from the British OG version to it's most recent form. Amazing improv skills truly. When Wayne sings, it's hilarious. Ryan and Colin are so in sync and the funniest freaking guys! Ayesha's really funny too and just gorgeous which is a dream combo ❤ I LOVE that you're covering this!!

Colin and Ryan (and Greg) were OGs on the British version, too, and the 3 made the most appearances of anyone on that version of the show. Wild to think they've been improvising together for almost 35 years! (Brad Sherwood and Chip Eston appeared multiple times in the 90s, too.)was
The absolute joy of hearing the intro was great. But the switch up to sadness when the -5 theories remain- was also great. Immaculate intro. We’ll miss you Mat, but I am also excited to see the new hosts do their thing.

I’ve wondered this before. In fact I’ve been running my own count on this for the past several months to make into my own video. This morning when I saw you had made this video, I honestly was a little upset. I thought I might be the one to break the news to the world (or my 63 subscribers 😂)
But after watching your whole video, I was touched by your ending about passing the torch. So I decided that I will press on and continue my research, following in your footsteps and confirming your findings. While I doubt you missed anything, I’m hoping to find my own perspective along the way to create something unique. I’ve actually come to feel honored to think that myself and a legend like you might have been sitting down doing research in different places at the same time. It’s crazy that after all these years, this show can bring people together in new ways. Thanks for the video MP!
I was at the final taping of Whose LIne back a year ago on February 1st, 2023. It was my first and only time in the audience and I'd been watching it since I was a kid back in the 90s. It was one of the best audience atmospheres that I'd ever been in. And it was mostly because those who came out for the final episode were huge fans ourselves, we understood how to support improvisers, and there were so many random "We love you!"'s and "Thank You!"'s from everyone.
Ryan, Colin, and Wayne (as well as Chip, Greg, Brad, Jonathan, Aisha, Drew and Clive, and the others) were such a huge part of my life, and while I'm sad to see them fully move on from the show, I am so grateful to them giving me the opportunity to relax and laugh over and over again for a majority of my life. Maybe they'll bring it back with totally new people, maybe they won't.
But it's going to be tough to move forward with this show without Ryan, Colin, and Wayne. They simply are the best.
Btw, episodes of the final taping are the ones where Wayne wears a green suit.
Im bummed there aren't anymore tapings. I think they still tour but I haven't looked into it for a few years now.

I really hope this episode honestly gets more love than expected because it truly deserves it. Whose Line use to be a thing when I was a kid with my brothers I feel like. We would typically watch it when it was on and share the laughs. As dorky as it sounds one time when the power went out and we were all bored I don't know who proposed it but we did our own pretend whose line to pass the time until the power came back on. It's stuff they likely would never do again and probably be embarrassed about it, but it's a memory that has stuck with me to this day.
Also it doesn't surprise me Ryan would win out considering yeah, the Drew Carey show was a bit of a hoot and he was on it too.

@@ericromano7703Nope. Drew relentlessly pitched the show to ABC and fought to bring it to the US. He produced it as well as hosted it, so Ryan might have brought the show to his attention, but Drew worked hard to make it happen. :)

Thank you for this, MatPat! Also, just an FYI regarding the UK run of the show, Ryan, Collin, Wayne, Linda, Laura, and Greg were all rather frequent contestants there as well. I used to watch reruns on Comedy Central back in the mid-90's long before I'd heard of Drew Carey. Truly delightful and absolutely side-splitting talent across the Pond.
I much preferred that version. By the time Drew Carey was hosting it, since the ... panel? ... was mostly the same, it was barely improv any more, as they'd done the same things so many times.
@@Tfin I'm rather inclined to agree. I do think not having a set group of performers really made the show stand out and helped keep the games from feeling a bit stale.
FIrst watched Who's Line by watching that version and when they continued on with the US version. I would watch that as well.

As someone in their 5th decade and started watching Whose Line with Ryan, Colin and crew back in the early days of Comedy Central, when they broadcast the UK version, and Penn Jillette was the voice of Comedy Central .. I just want to say thanks for covering this.

These theories where MatPat just does what he wants have been the best. I like Film Theory but I've usually never heard of the internet creepypastas they like to cover. This is something mainstream that I think most people have at least heard of and seen a bit of. ( Also Dropout's Make Some Noise is super similar)
I love this show so much, I'm really glad you did a video on it!
Whose Line came out as I was in high school, and once I got into college I joined an improv student group that began because of the show. I don't do much improv anymore, but the skills I built doing improv improved all aspects of my life. My people skills and even intellectual skills skyrocketed, which opened up career opportunities I had never considered. I became far more involved in different parts of my community, connected deeper with my family, and I'm just overall happier than I was before I was doing improv. I even met my wife at an improv show 18 years ago.
I guess I'm trying to say Whose Line Is It Anyway? literally made my life better in every way.

You know in early youtube, i mean like 2010 i discovered Whose line, someone had puted toghether the whole show, and i fell in love with it, also i cannot stay how much it helped me with my english, the vocabulary and the "slang" and references (dated, but i still got the most of it), so i always wondered who was the "Winner", thank you Mat!!!

I saw Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood's live show last year with my wife. It was absolutely hilarious, lots of audience participation, I laughed out loud until my cheeks hurt at times. Absolutely loved WLIIA and it’s still my go-to rewatch if I need some laughs. Was never a fan of the CW iteration but man…for those new to the show, search for the guest appearances by Robin Williams and Richard Simmons. Absolutely hilarious. Great job MatPat, a lovely episode to help you go out.
Whose Line has been an instrumental part of my developmental years so this hits different. When Drew Carrey was replaced, i was sad but thought of it to be something he'd done. Oh boy i was so wrong. He's an actual gem of a person. And to realise he wanted to play with Ryan and hence Ryan won least episodes is just Drew Carrey for me.

I remember when I was much younger, like a teen an wanted to count the points. Just for a laugh. I bought a small notepad an took tally. However, I couldn't keep up as I was missing alot of episodes. Then we didn't have TV for a few years, so....I am glad you did it. Thank you Matt! 😊

I grew up watching WLIIA, I always loved that show. Colin, Ryan, and Wayne's always been my favorites. The episodes with Richard Simmons were particularly off-the-wall.
Wayne Brady, Greg Proops, and Jeff Davies were always my favourites! I started with the British version though and went on to watch Drew Carey's Improvaganza.
I've seen a few of their travelling shows live, and I saw the original US run when I was probably younger than I should have, but these guys made me laugh more than anyone in my life, and I will always cherish them, even if the final season will be their final season ever

Considering how much hard work this'd be I think all of us casual and hardcore fans of Whose Line is it Anyways are absolutely super invested in this idea, I absolutely love the show and it's awesome that it still has such an audience online through youtube.

I have a lot of good memories watching this show with my dad. Our favorite game was scenes from the hat. Drew was the best host imo. His laugh is contagious. Ryan and Colin's chemistry is legendary.

My wife is currently dealing with her mother going to the hospital and now a rehab facility. Things are not great in that department.
When she gets home, mentally and physically exhausted, it just so happens that a local station is playing multiple Whose Line shows back to back to back. Watching and laughing to those helps her unwind. She looks forward to laughing at what these performers do because it helps her face another day.
