    Nigel it is so good to see you back at your desk and not lying in bed. I have missed your weekly vlogs which not only offer really helpful tips but also provide inspiration. Each week I have enjoyed your vlogs due to your positivity. I have missed that the past several weeks as you have been recovering. I have gone back and re-watched my Master Class sessions during your absence. I wish you continued success in your recovery and hope you can get back out in the field soon. It’s great to see you back.

    Glad to see you back, Nigel. The winning images from competition were amazing and left me inspired. Many congratulations to all the winners. My personal favorite was one of the commended images, the abstract by Dylan Nardini. The one thing that all the images had in common was the push they all gave me to keep working hard at improving my photography.

    So WONDERFUL to have you back Nigel. It's like seeing an old friend after a long absence. Congratulations on a very successful landscape photography contest! I'm glad my entries contributed to such an amazing and important cause. The winning images were fantastic...very inspirational as others have pointed out. To be honest it was refreshing to have a contest that was more about photography skills and not about who can push Photoshop editing to the extreme. As usual this video goes right into my playlist to be revisited often with all the great Danson tips. Keep taking it easy and wishing you a complete recovery.

    Welcome back Nigel. So great to see you again. I have been following you for a number of years and have learned so much. Also signed up for your master classes, you are no doubt the best educator out there in You Tube land. Also love that you run this contest, however could I make a suggestion; man6 of the winners are professional full time photographers. There is really no way I can compete, I don’t have access to epic locations, have a full time job……. You get the idea. How about an Amateur section to the contest, where entries don’t make an income from photography. I really value competitions like this to help improve my craft, it would be fun to compete with other amateurs out there.

    • @NigelDanson
      @NigelDanson  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Philip. I thought about that but it is so difficult to run and adding more measures like this adds to the complexity.

    • @oskarschad9856
      @oskarschad9856 Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Philip,
      may I also answer that it is not the gorgeous places you have to visit. Sometimes it is just observing and taking the chance on things near you. Although I was shortlisted, commended and now shown in the criticque session, I'm still pure amateur and taking pictures in leisure time because my real fulltime job for financing this hobby must have my full attention. Mostly I'm photographing near my home place in bavaria. Of course it is sometimes more easy to find motivation and scenes during vacation. But the best and for sure hardest training for this is to look around your home and take pictures other will not do.
      My advice to you is: Just do it and you will improve and also get noticed.
      All the best,
      Oskar (aka uwafot on the web)

    Great video, and an excellent philosophy for beginners and a great refresher for seasoned people alike. At the 25:00 mark with your beach landscape composition, I can see 3 things to consider for the grass: 1) Saturation is too strong, 2) Contrast is too strong, & 3) Exposure is too strong. Placing the ground in its own layer in a DCC & making those 3 adjustments + adding a diffuse glow can make a less distracting, fluffier grass & the viewer is free to prioritize the dramatic sky for a golden combination. The cloud in the central right corner is also a bit too bright imo as well.
    When post editing nature scenes, I learned that color isolation/desaturation and assigning luminosity are some of the most important things we can do to dramatically improve our results. Love all of your content & look forward to seeing more.

  • @antonoat
    @antonoat Před 2 lety +4

    Have to agree with many of the points you've raised in your critiques. A couple of things I notice very often now especially in landscape photographs are overemphasised and exaggerated often mundane foreground elements, sure you need balance in a photo but why give two thirds of an image over to the foreground when in fact it's often the wider scene or distant elements which are the main points of interest and they can become almost insignificant because the wide angle lens has made them small and appear even more distant, certainly aspects to consider when framing and composing images. Another thing I see very often is complete overall image sharpness front to back often due to focus stacking, this can look false as it's not how our eyes work, it's an important feature to be able to use focussing to help lead the viewers eyes to the important elements of our photographs, the subject and dominant features should often appear sharper otherwise there is a danger our eyes just wander looking for the focal point. Just thought I'd share the above couple of points, cheers.

    Dear Nigel, it's a honor for me having a commended picture in the WLP 2022 and on top that two of my images found its attention in the critique session although not finally shortlisted.
    Many thanks Nigel for the review and your honest thoughts on that. I can follow all your arguments because honestly I felt somehow the final non-perfection which I couldn't yet identify in those pictures although they are still one of my personal favorites. I really appreciate your comments and agree to the hints you give. Avoiding distraction on the right corner of the "Splash Sunset", pic #2 and also concentrating on left portion in "hailstorm coast" pic #1. I decided on location not to move the camera more left because light was far too bright, outburning and harsh. Cropping is the better way here.

    Really phenomenal winning image, not to mention the others. Very nice. I quite like asymmetrical balance where there's no predominant /center/ element. Having the visual fulcrum off-center -- often with a smaller but visually heavier element on one side balancing larger but lighter element(s) on the other -- adds to the dynamic value of the image. IMO when things are too centered, the image gets very stable and static. While that can work in some instances, I personally find it's not my favorite approach for landscapes. Once again, beautiful shots and great advice. Glad to see your healing.
