This black and white training film, made for the United Kingdom’s Civil Defense and Fire Service in 1956, provides a straight forward and unflinching look at the possible effects a hydrogen bomb would have on a major city in that country. Using World War II era footage of rescue work in the aftermath of German air attacks, animations, scale models, and somber narration, the film attempts to convey the devastation such an attack would inflict, what rescuers should expect to encounter in their efforts, and the sobering differences between a “nominal” atomic bomb and a ten megaton hydrogen bomb. Produced for the Home Office by RHR Productions, Ltd. Produced by Ronald H. Riley. Written and directed by David Villiers. This film directly references the 1952 Civil Defense training film “The Atomic Bomb: It’s Effects & How to Meet Them,” which is available in the Periscope Film archive.

It continues to amaze me that these films were circulated, and yet not. I assume that they brought comfort for some in their enhanced picture of survivability and hence maintained public belief that the grown-ups had a workable post-apocalyptic plan for resumption of normal service; we can only imagine the public uproar should the facts have been revealed. No point in piling earth against external walls and/or retreating into the most protected room here; I live within five miles of a strategically important railway junction so I’m likely to be fried pretty quickly - and I’ll be standing outside for it because the predicted aftermath is intolerable; your Deuce-And-A-Half, gun collection and well-stocked remote bolthole might keep you going for a week or two but do you really want to survive into a desolate, frigid, barren wasteland devoid of resources and with everything in your surroundings trying to kill you? Sleep well, all, and hope that the nuclear powers finally grow up and learn to play nicely.

Yeah, especially lately with people taking a lot of things for granted, we are all extremely comfortable to think we can pump our own water, make our own food, and so on from the comfort of our houses and grocery stores and faucets. The most paranoid people collect things like weapons and food as if their own survival is paramount but if they're the ones with most of the tools and they're just one person... that place becomes the primary target for scavengers. It's like when I think of guys bragging about having 20 assault rifles, you can only fire one gun at a time and it's NOT going to be like those zombie defense games where everyone's gonna run towards you from a single direction. Most likely IRL we'll just air drop a grenade on the building using an unmanned device to snuff the person out and then snipe from afar then collect the weapons and distribute them as necessary. But yeah, I think for the most part people have accepted their fate that if a bomb nukes the city, we can only hope the death is quick and painless, and until then, just gotta make the most of our lives.
The good thing about this video is it DID encourage people to be more productive despite the inevitability. After all, the biggest deterrant to war is avoiding a reason for it. If everyone agrees to be civilized and prove we can make a better future, then we're less likely to want to nuke each other as it wouldn't be worth all the excess clean up that follows. But lately you have a mad increase in insanity trying to make people lose hope so they can become "King of the castle" in thier heads....once again forgetting that High politician or homeless bum, a bullet or a grenade discriminates against no one. both will end up a sack of charred guts and we don't want a reason to make such happen...

A Ohio sub has 22 Trident II , so just one Submarine has the power of 586 Hiroshima attacks. And the US has 14 Ohio subs, then you move to land launch Minuteman IIIs with 3 (w78) warheads at 350 Kiloton each.
That is 70 Hiroshima in one ICBM. Of which there is 100 ready stand by Minuteman IIIs. Thats 700 Hiroshima attacks.
Then you have the mobile 134A Midgetman ICBMs with (w61) 300 Kiloton warheads.

@@johnsiders7819 Criminals are victims, though. They also victimise others. They're often a symptom of broader malaise. I think you might have unnecessarily conflated "victim" and "deserves much sympathy" -- it's an explanation intended to allow for repairs to broader society, to understand why people do criminality and stop it at source. Otherwise, you're just running around putting out fires. The objective is to prevent the criminal from being created at all. No punishment can ever unvictimise somebody. No justice can bring back the dead or fix serious injuries.
I see it in the same terms as a fire. It's a phenomenon that occurs when the conditions are right -- fuel, oxygen, ignition -- and ceases when they aren't. If it burns down my house, I don't hate the fire. I hate the thing or person that started it. You could call that sympathy.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous CZcams users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.
Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

A lot of World War II videos were like that, it wasn't until recently that people started to seriously question the integrity of the war. As most of the war films were protrayed as if the Nazis were attacking the US on US soil when it was mostly the other way around. Though they also assumed the Nazis had a personal vendetta against the US....they didn't, they actually mostly looked up to the US because of thier example of totalitarianism (and being the last country to outlaw Slavery but still withholing that idea) and the only reason for the huge anti-nazi push was to encourage people to give their lives to fight. Many of the strategies they employed like D-Day and such were actually suicide missions and the only reason Germany ultimately lost is because of a bad gambit against Russia, but the US's strategy was always "Throw men at it until we break, we have the numbers and the resources". Then Korea and Vietnam happened and we both know how THAT worked out...
