As the word ketchup in English may have actually come from Cantonese, who can complain? They ketchup styles in Indonesia and Malaysia are more of a savory soy sauce or fish sauce, not tomato. Italians need to take it easy. Tomatoes are a new world food anyway. They can't lay claim to them, they just adapted their use.
Just to clarify. In Malay and Indonesian, the word is 'kicap' or 'kecap'. And it refers to soy sauce and to some extent fish sauce which is closer to original meaning of the Hokkein Ki-chiap
Also due to colonialism and media, we also refer to tomato ketchup as both ketchup (murican) and tomato sauce (bri ish) or 'sos tomato'
