    12:58 Engineer Nick here!
A lot of people think the cog is building a resort/water park on the summit but the siding with some rolling stock is a great compromise especially considering it will be on a previously developed area with minimal impact and nothing compared to the hotel that used to be on the summit which everyone seems to forget about. The train cars will also be a seasonal thing and not permanently stationed at the summit. There has been a lot of cleanup taking place in the last few years along the railways right of way up the mountain. Unfortunately the mountain is already heavily commercialized and at this point the infrastructure and summit accommodations are essential to keeping the impact localized and in check. Fortunately through the diligent conservation efforts the vast majority of New Hampshire’s Peaks and wilderness area’s are well preserved.

My wife and I drove up to the summit on a motorcycle back in the 70’s. The road was mostly gravel back then and the bike got a little squirrelly on the deeper sections of gravel. The sky was clear when we got to the summit. About 15 minutes later, the summit was engulfed in a very dense cloud. Couldn’t see more than a few feet. Had to wait for another 30 minutes before it cleared enough to start the ride down.

Drove up once 20 yrs ago. Will never forget. It was a nice sunny shorts wearing summer day at the bottom, at the top it was 60+ winds, dark, foggy and sleeting.

The mountain is already accessible enough . You can take the train, drive or hike various trails. NH has an issue with overdeveloping. I say, leave it how it is.

I rode the train in the late 1980's. It was the coal running train. My two boys have skied the Mtn. these past 3 years. One of my boys is heading up tomorrow as we speak to hike it with the UConn Univ. Outing Club. They make a trip every year to hike it and then ski it in the Spring. I snowmobile in the surrounding area so I see her every year. I need to make a trip to the top again. Thanks for posting Ken!

Ken, a buddy who is from New Hampshire invited me to go with him up Mt. Washington, to the top on foot. that was 1973. I don't remember a train or a road. going to the top. 1973 was a long time ago. Things change.. I enjoyed the climb, it was a good experience.

We vacationed in New Hampshire many times in the 1980"s in a Class A Motorhome. We took the van ride up the Auto Road as we were not allowed to take the rental RV up the mountain per the owner so our budget took a hit so we could not take the Cog Railroad ride up the mountain. Now I have seen what the ride would have been. Thanks Ken for this video which filled in the gap of our past vacations.

Interesting but $75 per person just for the ride seems terribly expensive. I’d want a good three course meal thrown in for that price….Hey Ken, your beautiful daughter looks well, brainy too I’ll guess! You must be very proud. (We had our fifth grandchild last week, a beautiful baby girl too!) Stay blessed buddy 🙏

Nice area there at Mt. Washington. Wow, that's great that you were able to take so much footage of the ride up the mountain! This was really fun to watch. Wow, the summit has no trees. You are up in the clouds. You could literally say your head was in the clouds! That big building they are going to turn into a museum looks nice up there. Wow, the tip top house is amazing. That must be extremely windy if they chained down that other building. I didn't even know that there were cog railways up the mountain. It makes sense. With the high winds and steep grade that would be the most stable way to get up the mountain and 5 miles per hour lets you see the scenery. Thanks for taking us along Ken!

It was a very exciting day but the weather had closed in at the top so we didn’t see anything of the amazing view that can be seen on a clear day.

I guess by habit, I'd always walk up through Pinkam Notch on the AMC trails to the top. A few times there to ski Tuckerman's Ravine. There are running and bicycle races to the top from Rt. 16. ( The road that runs to Shelburne NH). The cog railway has lost it's historic significance. Makes the mountain more like a Disneyland ride. In my day even the AMC hut system, administered from Pine Street in Boston ~ I think ~ was criticized as moving toward "resort" status in the White Mountains. And course the AT (Appalachian Trail from Georgia) runs over the top of many of these mountains. Maybe just split the mountain: Half for Disneyland and Half for wilderness hiking. ~ Whatever ~

There is also "History" with the US Forest Service (versus the AMC ). The feds ask for a 5$ (donation) at some parking lots. Just annoying. Whew. The more $ involved, the more attention any "issue" gets around these "arrangements." Anyway thanks for the visit.
