  • Ed Unicycles China [Ep. 3] - In this one I ride deeper in to Xinjiang province, meeting many friendly people on the G30 wondering what on earth a British guy on a unicycle is doing in their country. Offers of food water are frequent and much appreciated. Offers of kisses from 40year old guys...not so much!

The watermelon scene in the field is reminiscent of a wonderful memory of my father's. He grew up in foggy San Francisco with a VERY German father. Wasting anything, especially food was "streng verboten!" (strictly forbidden)
My dad would escape his stifling home environment and the SF fog for the hot California Central Valley to visit his farming aunt and uncle. Ahhhh, freedom! His uncle was a larger than life type of personality. Drank heavily, but was stone sober for work on Mondays. And a fine medical professional with "the best hands in town." This uncle would take my dad and his cousin out into the watermelon fields to find ripe ones. How would uncle test them? By smashing them on the ground! "Ah, that one wasn't quite ripe yet!" his uncle would boom in his big voice. They'd walk the rows smashing watermelons until they found ripe ones. Then they feasted!
This behavior was so totally foreign to my dad. His father would have been thoroughly disgusted by this "American waste and excess!" And for this reason, my father LOVED it and LOVED escaping to his aunt & uncles on the farm.
