How to Pick a Save You Love in Football Manager

  • It’s hard to play football manager, but somehow the only thing harder than that is finding a save that you can really sink your teeth into. This has happened to me before, but this was before I found a way to turn every FM save I play into something I really enjoy. I’m warning you, this is going to require a fair amount of thinking, or at least introspection, to find you the most fun or best save you’ve ever played on FM.
There are a million different ways to play FM once you get a save started, with your tactics and wonderkid signing and team building, so it’s only fair that there are a million different ways people like to play the game. From a classic journeyman, with no coaching badges, no playing experience start, to the hyper-specific save trying to stave off relegation with the bottom team in a league in January. Maybe a tremendous database that creates an alternate universe for your FM save to take shape in, whatever it is, this’ll help you find it.
    Much Love,
    FM Senpai

I've done two saves this year both with the Build a club mindset. The first was Kaiserslautern in the German 3rd League. They were once at the top of the Bundesliga, able to compete with Bayern and all the top German Clubs, even going to Europe but have recently fallen mainly due to financial issues. Its also not terribly difficult, I got promoted from the 3rd League to the Bundesliga in 3 seasons. For my other save I'm doing Diagoras which starts in the Greek second league and is located on the island of Rhodes which I thought was cool (I imagine our stadium being called, "The Colossus of Rhodes"), the goal is to dethrone the traditional Greek powerhouse teams and compete in the CL.

If anybody does want a save to try, I've been doing one I've named 'the wolf pack'. The aim is to win the Austrian Bundesliga, German Bundesliga and English Premier league managing Wolfsberger, Wolfsburg, Wolves. To make it harder for myself I've added squad building rules than I must have a player from the 5 continents in the starting line up and at least 1 academy graduate also in the XI. So far I have won in Austria and I'm now in Germany looking at a top 4 finish but the trouble is I'm in a chasing pack of 5 or 6 teams all a long way behind Bayern. Wolves is worrying because they are close to relegation so my next move could be to the Championship after winning the league in Germany. Its kind of like a closed out journeyman in that you have the moves set out rather than moving around to random teams/Nations but so far it's really enjoyable.

Celtic was fairly easy - it took ~10 seasons before Scotland was one of the major European leagues.

If you start in the presence, by the time you begin your 4th save, you just know so many good free agents and talents whose contracts are running out that it is kind of boring. Same for staff. Panathinaikos who used to play in the ucl every season( once reached ucl final, twice semifinals) is a nice save if you want to rebuild. Although they have a pretty good team for the greek championship, the real challenge is to establish them to the Champions League(which means you have to win the greek championship, because only the champion of Greece can play in the champions league 2nd qualification round, 2nd 3d and 4th can only play on Conference league). Also, a major problem for the club in real life is their stadium, when i pick them i try to build a new stadium for the club but it's too tough because of the economical situation that they're facing. Back in fm19 i believe, if you wanted to coach them you had to start with a 6 point deduction and a ban from European competitions

I usually like managing a mid-lo-low table top flight team, and trying to do a stable first season, then reaching European competitions second season, and then going from there, bonus points if they have an especially quality player - I still remember a Bologna run with Alessandro Diamanti, around...FM2012, I think? Man had 20+ assists in the first two seasons 😄
My first save of FM2021 was with our "local" club (Hajduk), and ...with a little save scumming... it's been going well (got put into the Champions League group with the eventual winner and semi finalist, that was not good for the team morale, but other than that, it's been a fun time...
But I'd have to see who from the top 5 leagues I'll take, maybe someone like Wolves or Crystal Palace, off the top

I started playing Football Manager 2018. My local team is a fallen giant into the 4th divion of Romania with 4 league titles and 6 domestic cups, also a uefa cup semi-final during the 80s, after they got excluded from all competitions and declared bankruptcy. Amateur side, no training, youth facilities, stadium, etc. I managed two promotions in three years and now I'm getting ready for my first season in the second tier.

An idea for a fallen giant save is Swedish side IFK Göteborg (Gothenburg). In the 80's and 90's they dominated the Swedish league and were a strong force in Europe as well. Semifinalists of the European cup in 1986, won their CL-group in 1994 beating Man Utd, Barcelona and Galatasaray and of course their two UEFA Cup-titles from 82 and 87. Nowadays they are that frustrating team in no mans land in Allsvenskan. The occasional gems are often sold for nothing to Holland or Belgium. If you start a save now you have a talented squad mixed with experienced homecomers, decent finances and the initial boost of Marek Hamsik who is under contract until the end of august 2021. Enjoy!

Milan is great. It’s my main save as of now. Finished second in my first season and got knocked out of the europa league in the last 16’s. Second season I won the Serie A with 101 points and won the champions league! This resulted in me losing some of my best players - including Leao, Donnarumma and Hernandez - blessed be their treacherous souls. My third season is not going as well as a result, as I’m trying to rebuild and fill the holes those beautiful disloyal players left me with.
    It’s a blast

I'm just here to recommend a building a nation save with Ireland. I'll be honest its a bit painful at the start but its satisfying when you become the best team in the league. I've so far gotten to place 16 in the coefficient rankings. 15th place has 2 ucl spots, 1 europa league place and 2 europa conference league. This is also the first fm save i have ever done and im currently in 2044 so i could have done better 😅😅

In Spain or rather Asturias in a very non biased way I'd recommend two teams. One would be Real Sporting de Gijón, sitting in the second division it has three interesting players in midfield: Gragera (DM), Pedro Diaz (your classic DLP) and Manu (AM) and potentially decent youngsters with Guille Rosas, Morilla, Santamaría and Dacal. With a decent fanbase (bigger than a fair chunk of teams in the first division) for a "small" club, good installations and a historic stadium is a potentially sleeping giant a la Leicester. The second would be Lealtad, if you enjoy the grind is a semiprofessional team with a sick badge and black kit and that's enough for me.

Always get sucked into the Swedish leagues. Over the years played AIK, Goteborg, Hammarby, Helsingborg, Oster, BK Hacken and currently Stockholm Internazionale. Started as a relative equal top division where at least half the clubs could contend for the title after 1 off-season, way back in FM 13 or 14. In more recent games like in FM 20, Malmo is basically the top club which is a step above everyone else. Then you have the pack behind where most clubs can contend, but will lack the financial backing and fans excluding a couple of clubs. So you have to try to overthrow Malmo, while trying to keep the title, plus foreign clubs will send in relatively big money offers for your players. Which most of the time you'll have to try and squeeze as much money out of them as possible to fuel your clubs future young generation/transfers. So you can be competitive in the European competitions down the line. Plus it's a summer league which adds to the dynamic of trying to have a successful European campaign.

My favorite save ever is an Unemployed save I'm actually in right now.
First job was Barnechea in Chile second tier. Little suburb of Santiago tucked against the Andes. No fan base to speak of lol. Got them promoted, was leading the league in my first year after promotion when I got hired by Rosario Central. Got them into Libertadores, then fell short due to an insane injury crisis but won the coach of the year, hired by River Plate. About 2 years each stop.
River is so much fun bc they have great youth intake, are a top club domestically of course, but then winning continental competitions is still hard bc Brazil -- but possible.
Planning on staying with River basically until I get a top half job with a Spanish or English club, maybe Europa or better in Germany or Italy...something like that.
