  • Oscar nominations, snubs, frontrunners - every year it’s the same hot topics. But this year I’ve been less and less interested in it all, and more and more aware of the problem with awards season.

    Can't remember who said it on Twitter but someone suggested that instead of a D list stand-up hosting, get a classy actor to do it. My head went straight to Kathy Bates for some reason. That ain't gonna solve your issue with social media which I too find utterly draining, though I am still mad Toni Collette didn't get an Oscar nom for Hereditary.
    Lovely little vid Stu. Hope you get the Lovely Little Vid award 2024 or shit's going down.

      Or even better just hire a literal dude off the street to host it, give him 10 minutes hair and makeup and no autocue and I would tune back in *immediately* - thanks for watching my dude and I will be campaigning in the lovely little vid awards don’t worry.

    Completely agree with what you say about awards being nonsense Stu - that said, you just won the Oscar for editing and cinematography 💥

    The year they put the neon jet ski as a giveaway on the Oscar's....was a joke against me for talking the way I was on the internet around 2018-19. Like celebrity spirits dont have a sense of irony, or sarcasm. Hazing

    The award seasons were interesting from 2015 - 2021 but saying that, I've never watched them as a whole, I just see the clipped out social content. They don't reflect the films that really made that year. 2023 was one of the most divisive years I've seen in terms of peoples top 10s, no two were the same and I love that! But unfortunately I think the awards aren't going anywhere

    • @StuTalks
      @StuTalks  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yeah i definitely think the awards circuit is sticking around too, but would be very interested to see viewing figures this year. I’m not sure if more a divisive year will lead to more conversation about awards and a higher interest, but for me I agree that it only further highlights how much Awards shows aren’t reflective of the actual year of cinema!

    Stopped paying attention to awards circa 1999 when SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE won the Oscar for Best Picture, beating out SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and THE THIN RED LINE and LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. When was the last time you heard anyone say, ''Yeah, so I was watching Shakespeare in Love the other night ...''? Never. That said, if they get Ricky Gervais to host, I'm in.

    • @StuTalks
      @StuTalks  Před 7 měsíci

      Didn't expect Shakespeare in Love slander in the comments this soon! Very fair though - very wild it beat out all of those.. I think even Gervais doing his whole "roasting everyone" spiel would feel forced at this point.

    • @todesque
      @todesque Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@StuTalks I doubt Ricky would do it. And I strongly doubt they'd invite him. Shakespeare in Love. It's funny, over the years I've come across a few people online (less than a dozen, mind you) for whom that film winning Best Picture was the straw that broke the camel's back.

    I find award season more enjoyable since I started to pay attention to other not-as-well-known awards. SAG is generally closer to a young, liberal audience's taste, NYFCC for the film buffs, even Globes has gotten more international and serious critic-y since they expanded membership. And then there are also the other guild awards like Annie, ACE, VES. Or Gotham and Indie Spirits for indie films.
    It's easy to fall into the trap that only the televised awards matter, or they exist to validate our favorite films and film tastes. If an award doesn't lead to more, bigger opportunities for those filmmakers/actors/etc, or normies seeking out films they'd otherwise overlook, it's just a piece of junk sitting on a shelf.

    • @StuTalks
      @StuTalks  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Agreed broadly i tend to find it’s more bearable the further left field you go - things like the spirit awards have usually been more enjoyable to me in past years. But even those this year just feel a bit pointless - there’s less annoying discourse around those, and it’s nicer to see a focus on indies, but it still feels futile trying to pick films above others..

    • @goofrider
      @goofrider Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@StuTalks I mainly try to focus on the process rather than the outcome (whether noms or wins). Watching filmmakers, actors, and even producers and crafts ppl attending screenings, q&as, roundtables, and numerous podcasts/shows, even the parties/luncheons. They get to get deeper about their films, talk to ppl who care about the craft, running into their peers, meeting bigger producers/filmmakers who might give them more opportunities, etc. Just that the media and the discourse treat it as a horserace doesn't mean you have to also.
      A yr with an avant-garde german-language film like ZONE OF INTEREST getting 5 noms is still pretty remarkable. Even POOR THINGS gets the 2nd-most noms feels unprecedented, the old Academy would have found it too raunchy and weird. Not every year gonna be as exciting as Parasite or EEAAO and that's ok.

      @@StuTalks Ha. As for the topic... I do love seeing good artists getting their moments, but I become more and more aware how meaningless they really are in the grand scheme of things. And the amount of money that studios put into their awards campaigns is actually disgusting, that shouldn't even exist, just another layer of Hollywood excess really.
      An award win doesn't make or break a film, but it does influence more people to watch it, which is good. The history is fun too, but the work always speaks for itself and awards are just glittering prizes.
      As for social media, I just find it funny. Omg look at this minute social interaction on the red carpet, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!

    • @StuTalks
      @StuTalks  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Spot on about money there - the fact that really it’s all about which studios can afford the strongest campaigns. And everyone *knows* this, but i think is supposed to just ignore it and play along? Frustrating because there absolutely is a benefit to winning awards for the films involved - we do see a nice extended push in cinemas etc, and it does (whether i like it or not) bring eyes onto certain films, but there has to be a better way to get those same outcomes than picking one film or one performance and giving it some metal.

    Celebrity worship and Celebrity culture is dead. We normal people are tired of seeing rich people flaunting their wealth and patting themselves on the back.

      And I think modern celebrity culture can feel so repetitive and forced - not to mention anything that does feel like a natural moment soon ends up being worn into the ground..
