Was Hedman deal better for Tampa than if they’d given it to Stamkos? | Jay on SC

  • The Lightning signed defenceman Victor Hedman to a four-year extension with an AAV of $8 million, which mirrors the contract former captain Steven Stamkos signed with the Predators. How will Tampa move on without Stamkos? Was Hedman’s deal better for the team rather than having given it to Stamkos? TSN Hockey analyst Frankie Corrado joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

stamkos signed for more money with NSH than he’s worth. his contract will age like room temperature milk by year 3. maybe even earlier lol.
hedman signed for pretty much a comparable amount he was already getting. he makes $7.8m on his current deal, and will get an earth-shattering $200k wage adjustment. hedman plays more minutes, plays more games (stamkos has had an injury history) and plays a PREMIUM position. had almost a point-per-game average in 2024.
stamkos is a declining 34-year old winger, whose 5v5 production has been in freefall for 3 years. 19 of his 40 goals came on the PP. anyways, victor hedman is a conn smythe winner and 6 times norris finalist who will be making $8M for the first time in his career. he’s the one who got much less than he’s worth over the years. if hedman decided to have gone to market, he would have gotten $10m+ /AAV all day long, 7 days a week.
luckily none of the bellyaching pylons are TBL owner jeff vinik, who famously appoints highly competent people and lets them do their jobs to the best of their abilities. most teams in the NHL would LOVE to have JBB as the GM. he would be hired in less than a new york minute. 💯

Very well put, Hedman will probably be just a good as today at the end of the contract. Stamkos maybe still is good and scores 20 goals. but there is no way he is as good as today.

40 Goals is declining? Give your head a shake, you are just pissed, why take it out in Stamkos?

      @@FredphlegmStamkos' Lightning had two modes.
A deep run or miss the playoffs / one sided first round exit.
      And here's the crazy thing:
Stamkos' 5 best regular seasons? 4 times, the Bolts either miss the playoffs or lose in a pretty soft series.
They've got a few asterisk Cups to their name, which means those years it was easier to make the playoffs and it was against completely different divisions (and in one case, it's a much easier division format).

@@nolankuffner3573 The Lightning played two 6 game series both of those covid seasons. And they went through the Bruins, and Islanders TWICE in a row. They then won the ECF for the 3rd straight year. And without Brayden Point, took the Avs to 6 games. The '20/'21 Bolts were the most dominant team the league has seen since the 90's Red Wings. Their cups are legit.

A genuine #1 defenseman who still has a good 3-4 years to give vs a player with next to zero defensive capability?
    Nah, sorry.
I'm taking Hedman 12 times out of 10.
Guentzel is 4-4.5 years younger than Stamkos and just as capable as puttingnthe pucks he's fed in the net.
That's not the game Carolina plays and those weren't the players the Pens still had around.
The same channel talks about Crosby being wasted by Dubas? Really? Guentzel will excel with the guys he has feeding him. He'll be able to keep up with their skating (dude is still pretty quick).
And he actually has the ability to add to the team defensively.
You prioritize Hedman, and spruce things up with Guentzel.
I heard people saying there's no loyalty, but come on.
NHL teams just dropped a billion dollars on July 1st, a first time occurrence.
It's not making friends and being bros. When it comes to crafting a team, it's a money game. And there's a lot of money involved outside contracts. For players and owners.
If guys can't understand that, maybe we should stop calling them "professional athletes".
You're paid A LOT of money to play a sport with a short window for success.

Tampa Bay is big trouble right now because nobody gave stamkos an agreed to contract extension this is devastating for these fans as a Blackhawk fan now they’re still rebuilding so I guess Tampa Bay will blow it up until they get better after getting Guentzel Atkinson Girgensens came to Tampa Bay and sergachev already got 8 years since winning two cups and no he’s in Utah this GM might be the blame in Tampa Bay or not that’s selfish how they lose stamkos sergachev in the offseason

Lets be realistic, Stamkos doesn't hit top 10 for best captains.
They learned to win the first cup without him.
His play on the ice is comical, no defense, slow, coughs up the puck regularly,
    lead his team in minus.
Further, they have 3 skaters that are easily better than him.
So, what is he actually leading?

JBB “the best i can do is 8x3 24M total”
stamkos: “ok, 3 years 8 per, wanted that extra year but i guess i can make that work”
      JBB “guess again” 😏

There was something off about the leaked 3M 8 years offer for Stamkos.
    Something disrespectful.
It's no wonder it was leaked.
Tampa ignored Stamkos' agent for month too.

    • @gmotdot
      @gmotdot Před 2 dny

There was nothing off, it was a cap friendly contract offer within rules… Stamkos would have been paid something like $28m cash in the first 4 years and $1m for the last 4 years (or thereabouts).
