    Best crab catching video for this area I've seen yet! Thank you for doing it...all the right and GOOD information, brotha! Thank you! PS...do you check the Health Status report for the marine biotoxin? I know they mentioned on the site it doesn't often include crabbing, but wasn't sure. I'm a bit leery of taking anything home from a red or high biotoxin tide...just curious your thoughts on this.

      Thanks for the comment I'm really happy you found it useful. As far as the biotoxins... in the summer months I'd be cautious for sure. The best months the old timers say are the ones that end in "er"... September - December.

    Pretty good video. Due to the distance I am from the ocean, 4 hours away, we fish/snare from darkothirty to about 11pm then head for home, a long day. We crab constantly but your correct about the tides. We go on that old joke, a bad day of crabbing is better then a great day of working!

      Just an update, the laws are different from state to state so make sure you read the regs. 5 3/4 inches here in Calif. and females are legal to keep. There are a few people that I see using pots from piers and shore but the snares are a bunch more fun. I don't think you can use snares in Washington or Oregon?

    Great Video, BUT FOR A NOVICE LIKE ME YOU SHOULD HAVE ALSO SHOWN HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HARD SHELL AND A SOFT SHELL DUNGENESS CRAB!!!!!!! PLEASE INCLUDE THAT IN YOUR VIDEO"S for new guys like me. They are hard to find even on CZcams

      Keith, I really appreciate the feedback and will absolutely show everyone how to determine if it's a soft shell crab. The problem of course is catching one first. I've only ever caught one and you could tell immediately. The shell was not rigid and I was able to depress it with my fingers with little force. An easy way to tell for sure is to take a leg and pinch it with your fingers. If there is any give it's a soft shell. Anyway, hope this helps. I'll be sure to demonstrate it next time I catch a crab. As always thank you for the great feedback. I sincerely appreciate it.

    Just an FYI. I also grab them by the back legs but I brought up my first crab of the season and was a bit lax in my grab. I was holding on too light and had him upside down. He managed to get me on the top of my hand with both claws. That was a first!!!! I set him down on the flat and he released me. Next grab I wasn't so friendly!! Measured him and he was a maybe but not a 100% sure legal. I tossed him then started to wipe the blood off my hand. He really got me. My bad. Lesson learned!

      Nothing worse than getting pinched for sure! I can't imagine both claws at once. OUCH!!!

    I crab around the Vancouver BC Canada area off the docks ,, I just go to Butcher stores they often have the left overs of a Chicken they cut up ,, The Bones with meat on.,, Sometimes they just give it away , or charge a Buck or Two for a big bag,,This is just as good as using Drum sticks and other parts of a Chicken and Cheaper ,, in British Columbia it is 4.5 inches for Red rocks

      @SoundFishing2020  Před 4 lety +1

      Fishers may also keep six red rock crab of either sex per day in open areas, provided those crab are in hard-shell condition and measure at least 5 inches across.

      In the Puget Sound yes. However this video was at the ocean... rules there are "Pacific Ocean has a daily limit of 6 Dungeness Crab, 6" minimum size, males only, and in hardshell condition."

    • @wesleymonske8103
      @wesleymonske8103 Před 2 lety

      Depends on the area. Westport is area 2.2.... considered open pacific ocean.
      In puget sound they have to be 6 1/4 but I acidic ocean is 6" and can keep 6 crabs in hard shell condition. In the sound its 6 1/4" and can keep 5. In the columbia River you can keep #12 - 5 3/4 ". Lots o luck with that too .pretty much need a boat and real heavy pots. Lots of luck

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Před 4 lety +1

      You'll catch both male and female. You can keep either sex of the Red Rock and only the males for the Dungeness.

      Don't use fish at Westport. Mr sea lion will rob your pot . Use clams n chicken in a net bait bag and squid if you catch it.

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Před 2 lety +1

      I've not had any issues with salmon carcasses so far but heard sea lions can mess the trps up pretty good. I like using clams as well. I've not tried squid... will have to give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

    Yo B. nice catch, what dock did you go there in Westport? I will be razor clamming over in Twin Harbors on Dec. 31 thought I might drop a few pots before I dig some clams.

      We parked at the lot at the end of Neddie Rose Dr. by the Harbor Resort. We crabbed on the docks between the parking lot and the fishing pier. We spread ourselves out along a few of the boat slips. Hope that helps.

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Před 2 lety +2

      A good way to look at it for sure. A lot of people think red rock crab are invasive but they are not. It is another native crab species. Fortunately their population is still healthy enough to keep both sexes. Though not a bad idea to release the females as you suggested.
