2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tailgate latch repair. (What the other videos DON'T tell you)

  • I watched tons of videos showing how the bezel just pops right off.... WRONG! You MUST loosen the bottom of the three bolts on the INSIDE of the tailgate! Hopefully you don't have a bed cover that can't be opened from the outside of the bed, like I do. If you do have a bed cover, you're going to have to pry the bezel off and break it. Use a plastic pry bar, if you value your paint job. I just had my truck painted so I did care. :(
Here is the bezel I ordered on Amazon to replace it.
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Like I mentioned in the video, if you search for the plastic latch arm clips, the results go from 1999 - 2007 and stop! I called the dealer and they have the "correct" parts for $5 something each, and they said that they changed the style in 2008 so the pair of 2007's for $5 won't work. Well, if you search these part numbers below, it will show that these work in the 2007,,, so... the 2007 ones online will work in the 2008 as well.
Another thing the other videos don't say is... install the clip into the latch holes first! Then put the arms into the hole and swing the clips up to click onto the arms. If you try to put the clip on the arm and force it into the hole, you're probably going to break your new clip!!!! It's SUPER easy to just swing it up and clip it on.....
The actual part #s for the plastic clips are.
    RPL-88981030
    RPL-88981031
I could have ordered these instead of paying over $5 each!
    www.amazon.com/Naviurway-Tail...
I hope this can save someone the frustration I went through trying to remove the bezel & finding the clips. I don't understand why so many videos had it all wrong?

The problem I had, was the tailgate would not close. It was just rusted and I needed to oil it inside of that plastic cover!
So just like everybody else in the comments before me... thank you very much you saved me a ton of time and bs.🙂

Thank You for an Honest video !
Unfortunately.....I found you too late !
    Lol !
Somehow after lots of head scratching, and hair pulling, I got mine out, without totally destroying it !
    I said totally !
As at least two of the piece's that secure the Bezel to the tailgate, gave it up !
Funny, I don't remember my old 2006 Sierra being this troublesome ?
But if I may say.....while you have it opened up, you should lube the Hell outta the pivot bracket mechanism where the rod's attach, as it will, over time corrode and bind up, keeping the rod's from freely moving, and you won't be able to close the tailgate !
Slamming it over and over, will only lead to misaligning the lock pins, attatched to the Bed !
Hope this helps save some steps !
    👍😉
That is what brought me here !

For those who need a replacement part immediately, the Dorman Help! 75450 kit, which includes 6 various clips, had an exact match for the left-side tailgate rod of my 2010 Silverado (the black clip in the kit). As mentioned in the video, this kit probably won't show compatibility with 2008+ Silverados, but two of the clips will fit. All of the Amazon sellers are showing nearly a month for delivery right now because of the pandemic. Dorman 75450 was on the shelf at O'Reilly for $4.29.

Thanks! This will be the 2nd time having this issue. The 1st time the handle broke one winter day when trying to open it so i replaced the whole thing. Now, (about 4 years later) it's having trouble closing and the handle feels loose. I ordered a whole new unit to replace it with $40. It may just be the clips lol I haven't got that far. Hope it's just an easy replacement and i don't need to purchase the rods or something else.
Thank you for the clear guide again!

I'm sorry, I don't know. If I'm understanding you correctly though, it sounds like you have to fish the rod out. I'd use a bent coat hanger to try to get it.
