      Tell me about it ! I spent the whole of that decade hating Giggs and Scholes. Scholes, especially, just had a way of hitting Arsenal from just outside the box !

    My football memory was going to the old Wembly in 1980, to watch my local team in the Non League Cup Final, our town only has 10,000 people but we took 15,000 supporters with us from the North, special trains and a fleet of coaches. We sang, and waved our flags, cheered the team being announced, with biggest cheer for our captain and centre forward. I remember when we scored, though not the two they scored. We walked back to the station singing that we would be coming back to Wembly in 1981, we didn't, haven't been back yet. Back home on an open top bus the team toured the town, as little lads chased behind to the market ground, where youths perched on top of hoardings and old ladies in plastic union Jack hats sang Congratulations and Celebrations. That we lost made no difference at all, we went that's what mattered.

    My team is Newcastle United, the world's greatest under-acheivers. In the 90s we were everyone else's 2nd favourite team, we were dubbed "The entertainers" by Sky Sports because we were fantastic to watch. I honestly think we led the way in the attacking style of football that the Premier League became known for, but typically, we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in 96, finished 2nd again in 97, and been playing catch up ever since. We must be the best supported failures in world football, 55000 every home game, and nothing to show for it. But one day......................
    I just hope I'm still alive and kicking to see it. Last time we won the FA Cup was in 1955......... 2 years before I was born.

But no matter how hard times got tough, our true fans never gave up, which has now paid off. They stood by the team even at rock bottom of the EFL. No one who isnt a football fan through and through has heard of us, but ill tell the story
    In 2004 we nearly went bust, we were in debt, players werent payed, the club was bought for £1, we were fighting for survival in League 2 (4th tier of english football). Since then we have become the only team to get promoted in all 3 playoffs through pens, we’ve set records, we made it to the premier league in 2017, the best day of my life, we beat manchester united, we stayed up with a 1-1 draw against reigning champions Chelsea. Thats the story.
    (We also were the first team to win the top division 3 times in a row, first team to score directly from a corner, developed the counter attacking football philosophy under Herbert Chapman, and started the career of a Manchester United legend in Denis Law)

    As a Leeds Utd fan, i cant even begin to describe the emotions we've gone through for the past 16 years until our return to the Premier league last season. I have to admit on several occasions last season i wept whenever no-one was around watching our success, it's the same with the England national team, seeing us potentially having an opportunity to do well in the Euro's after years of heartache is very special. Football is a sport like no other, the emotions you go through cant be described, only other football fans will understand that.

    The long history of football has produced international rivals, local rivals, city rivals. These rivals create that emotional attachment to the games. When important games come around and you face a long standing rival that are in the way of a league title, international title and a chance to put them out or even go past them to reach the top, that emotion has carried many hearts to love football.

    Real football is ritualised battle. It's about belonging, loyalty and togetherness with team-mates and fans. That's why it means so much and why it's so emotional.

    @garrywolfe6077 Před 2 lety

    I love you comments about the emotion - a lot of people, who don't understand the game, criticise that it is 'low scoring' or sometimes a 'draw'.
    It is only when you understand how difficult it is to succeed and score that you can truly understand the euphoria of the players and the fans.
    Unlike other sports - the general expectation is a 'draw' and therefore to win is a rush like no other and to lose can be the opposite.

We were at Celtic Park (they were renovating Hampden at the time) and the atmosphere even in the car on the way home with everyone with their scarves and flags hanging out the windows of cars and mini buses and coaches and everyone smiling and waving at each other through the windows on the motorway. In Argentina we may have very corrupt politicians and an economy that astounds every scholar as even in default we still don’t crumble, and being in crisis is the normal where inflation never stops and no one cares. But there is one thing we are good at, making great footballers.

    Not just skill and fantastic abilities. Football requires players who can 'read the game', anticipate and plan ahead. In many ways, with skilful players, it's like chess. A game for players who anticipate, plan ahead, react and amend their intentions in fractions of seconds.

I've never been into football, I haven't been following the latest Euros, even my sister watched the England v Germany match and she's about as sporty as I am, lol. I'm aware, specifically, of the long rivalry between the two nations ... I'm old enough to remember when England trounced Germany in 1966, " They think it's all over ... it is NOW ". Seeing this montage hasn't changed my view of football but it's given me more of a sense of the atmosphere around the 'beautiful game'.
