About OFF GRID with DOUG and Stacy
In 2010 we decided to sell everything and build a log cabin on 11 acres. We have lived in the log cabin for a decade now with no solar power or wind power plus zero public utilities. We live like the pioneers except in the 21st century. We post videos on social media to encourage people to return to the land and make a living with your family. We teach folks:
*Off grid living *Rain water catchment *Cooking with wood
*Food growing *Cooking from scratch *Raised bed gardening
*Food harvesting *fermenting the harvest *food preservation
*Holistic Remedies like Grandma made *How to make money and live this life
*storing food in a root cellar *DIY Build projects
*Animal Husbandry *Raising Chickens, Guinea, Turkeys and Ducks
All of our videos are made to empower you to break free and LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!

My husband is an avid outdoorsman and we have heated our homes with a wood stove for the past 12 years. We currently have a 2 year supply of wood which he harvested, cut and split. We did not spend any money on our heat. Our next project is getting chickens and establishing a small garden. Our son is a great gardener and will be helping us. I started searching for more homestead channels. I have learned so much. Stacey, you had a great idea to write things down that you fill are important. I have just started that. I am in the process of reading about food preservation. I will be starting my first garden and learning to can this year. I am so excited to do this. I have to say, I just feel the Lord pulling me towards this lifestyle. I've spoken with my husband about living a simpler life. He's all for it. But I know he wouldn't live completely OFF GRID, but at least he's willing to go towards this type of lifestyle. Lol..
Right now, I am trying to pay off our debt to be able to start this journey. We are looking at buying a couple of acres. We're also in discussions whether we want to buy a manufactured home or just purchase a home with the acreage. I've even mentioned buying a shed and turning it into a home. Redundant systems are a must these days. Recently we lost power and it was inconvenient but not the end of the world. We have an outdoor wood furnace which was of little use without the blower going. However we have indoor wood burner, kerosene heater and propane heaters. We have a generator but kept it off as a backup. Battery operated lanterns n flashlights as well as hurricane lamps for lighting. A propane stove, propane camp stove, wood burner top surface and outdoor fire pit gave us plenty of cooking options. Heck I cooked meals on the top of the kerosene heater just letting them simmer. We have a 1915 Perfection kerosene heater. That little booger holds about a half gallon of kerosene and will heat a 200sq ft area for 15 hours on low. That's keeping things about 60°-65°f. Crank it about halfway and it'll run you out lol. Never knowing what systems or supply lines you can count on makes redundancy all the more important.

You guys are amazing! I watch every day during my lunch break at work. We have 3 kiddos and both work full time. It's exhausting, but you've got to start somewhere to become more self-sufficient. So, last year we put in 6 raised garden beds, 3 apple trees, 4 elderberry bushes and got started with canning and preserving (I did well for my first year, but I have a lot more to learn)! This year (for obvious reasons) our first goal is to get chickens! I also want to get blueberry bushes and start a strawberry patch. And last but not least, I want to invest in a wood burning stove as an alternative heat source before next winter approaches. It's tough because I want to do everything all at once, but that's just not realistic! I'm learning to crawl before I walk and walk before I run!

I appreciate how you break down different aspects of the homestead for people like me and my family who want nothing more than to leave this city life behind. It makes me hopeful and keeps that dream alive! I absolutely love the stove that is definitely one of the nicer ones i've seen. Thank you so much for another great video!

Reminded me so much of when I would go and visit my great granny in Kentucky. She lived almost off grid. She did have electricity, but she drew water from a well, had an outhouse, heated with coal and cooked on a wood stove. The memories are so good of being at her house. Thank you for bringing that back. - Reta

My MaMaw Ruby was from Harlan/Evarts and was an angel. I still have an Aunt Alice in Evarts. I have been reconnecting with my Ky family last few days and I read this. Kind of Synchronicity.

Sounds like the way I grew up we didn’t have a bathroom or electricity until I was six. Our lighting at night was the coal oil light. We then moved into a home that had electricity, later moved into a home that had electricity, no bathroom just the out house And a well just outside the back door. Eventually my dad had a sink put in for us to do dishes. I do not remember if we had heated water but we had a water faucet.

Yes! It is a lot of work, but so rewarding! I sure miss heating with wood. I miss having a garden, chickens, eggs, porkers, steers, and goats, and living a simple lifestyle. Never did have sheep. I'm a retired nurse, 64 years old, divorced, now living in a condo in a small town. I do buy vegetables in the summer from a local vegetable stand. I buy my meat from a local butcher. I have experimented with growing vegetables and herbs in pots, but it just isn't the same. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to raise my three boys on a small farm, living a simple, frugal lifestyle. For now, my little condo is affordable and the best option for me. I will continue to reminisce about the good old days and live vicariously through you! Love your channel, your wisdom, your kindness, your generosity, and how you share your faith. Blessings.
