I agree it is a very difficult decision to make and Me personally would encourage him to go the bike route first for several reasons but the main one is being conscious of bikes when he eventually does get a car. I think everyone should have at least 2 years on at least a moped before being allowed to drive a car. Also like you said you would be able to go on rides together giving you the opportunity with the aid of bike to bike communication to teach him some more giving him better road sense i could go on forever but you get the gist of what i'm trying to say

Gary Wilson I do agree with you- I think everyone should have to at least do the CBT as part of applying for the provisional license. Everyone needs to be more aware of what it feels like to be a biker!! it would make everyone better drivers. Thanks for sharing your thoughts mate and yes, the idea of future rides/tours with my lad is kind of exciting.

About ten years ago i had this exact situation.I tried to talk my son out of buying a 125,he was 18 had his own place and needed cheap transport. He bought a cbr125 anyway did his cbt and away he went.I helped as much as i could,in those early days his riding was sketchy,i remember him almost ramming me because he didn't know about engine braking and going down the gears........
CBR 600 then Fireblade followed and now he has a car.I can finally relax.I feel two faced but when it's you're own at risk it is bloody horrible.Even now on ride-outs (he kept the 600) i ride at reduced speeds and try not toovertake if i am in front.

Hedge hog -the voice of experience. thanks for sharing your thoughts. It''s such a difficult decision because we know the risks, we've all had near misses! and the thought of our kids putting themselves in that situation is frightening.

Dilemma eh.... My Daughter and us are in the same situation. The insurance premium to add her to our car as a provisional driver is nothing short of obscene!! There are individual policies for learner drivers in their own name and they can insure either their own car or their friends/parents car for 1,2,3 or more months at a time to gain valuable time and experience behind the wheel until they are ready to go to the next stage and pay for driving lessons. Google 'Learner Driver Insurance' and see if it's an option or route worthwhile considering mate. regards Mark

+Mark Horton Hi Mark, good to hear from you. Thanks for the info. One of my friends mentioned this type of policy. They have their son on something similar. It seems a sensible way around things. The joys of kids eh!!! I thought it was supposed to get easier as they grew up!!!!!

Me and my lad are in the same boat. The only difference is that his Mam has said "No Fucking Way" is he riding a bike......so I think I'll leave it a bit. RSm8

Hi Just wondering if there is any updates to this Video?. It's such a shame that our youngster's have been priced off the Rds these days when it comes to Car's, the Insurance is a joke. I started Driving at 17 bit like yourself.....It's as tho the poorer kid's are being penalised posh area's down south pay a lot less for insurance even tho repaires cost more..my Youngest Daughter will be 18 this April and I would have loved to teach her to drive but just can't afford it....was thinking of getting back onto 2 wheels having had many bikes over the years passed test at 18 and now age 58 ime really worried about letting her have a bike because of the dangers...maybe buy a cheap Chinese 125cc bike and teach her to ride that....anyway wouldn't mind hearing how your getting on with your son...Cheers Steve Liverpool

Don't let him on a bike ..too young at 17..Kids that age think they are indestructible and just don't see the danger...

I think I agree. If I'd been riding a motorbike when i was 17 i'd have had a fair few accidents!!!! Reckless, hotheaded, ignorant to danger and as you say - indestructible!!!
