It's a comparison that I've been juggling for a few weeks myself.
Ended up going for the Sigma, for its price and compactness for travelling. I have a Sigma 16mm f1.4, which covers the wide angle soft image issue on the Sigma 18-50, and I also have Tamron's 70-300 as a budget telephoto, which works a treat also! Sigma's 56mm f1.4 is probably the only missing lens in my collection.
For better image quality, I'd have jumped straight to Sony 16-55 G I think instead of going for the tamron, though thats my personal preference!

I have the Sigma 16mm F1.4. I feel like the build quality of Sigma lenses is superior to that of Tamron (slight plasticky feel). Since I got the 16mm at my disposal, I don't need the extra 17mm wideness the Tamron offers. A good thing about the Tamron is that it has the same filter thread as the 16mm I own so I don't have to use step-up rings.
I am still trying to decide between the two however. Is the Tamron 17-70mm a good option for weddings (and festivals) or would the Sigma 18-50mm be best? It is also important for me that the lens is truly stable, I don't want jittering and I am not sure how much of a difference active vs standard stabilization by the FX30 is a big difference.
There's a lot of things to take into account. I am for example trying to consider whether the weight and bulkiness of the Tamron might actually be beneficial, as it adds to the stability of handheld shooting?
I have 16-55 g 2.8 sony and struggling to get stable footage with fx 30 with dji rs3 pro gimbal. Please suggest best lens and gyro software also not supporting 16-55 g lena

I have the Sigma 18-50F2.8 and the Sony 16-55F2.8 G lens. While I like and use the tiny Sigma on fun casual shoots, it is not wide enough for me, and the Sony is clearly better in image and build quality. It is expensive though, but it's my favourite APSC zoom lens.
I also prefer the Sony lens on the FX30. I have the Sigma lens for my Fuji X-T5. It is a shame though that on the FX30 focus breathing compensation is not compatible with the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 G, that would have been an extra selling point for it.
Interesting take! I've never used the Sony 16-55 because it's at that price point where I would prefer to either buy the 16-35 GM for a little bit more, or go with a more budget option like the tamron. The 16-55 seems great for people who do not want to move to full frame. SInce all of my other cameras are full frame though, I'd rather save a little more and go for the 16-35 GM. That's an interesting take though, maybe I'll try to get those two lenses and do some testing!
I use the 11-20mm tamron and as I have FF cameras I also use the 28-75.

Great video. I own the Tamron 17-70 lens but I have a question for you about focusing distance. Let's say if you are wanting to take a photo of a plate of food. Would you zoom in or would you leave it at 17 and move the camera closer?
Two very different looks - all depends on what you’re going for. I typically zoom in and get further away to avoid distortion
@@keith-knittel I just do a search this morning and see that u can focus close up, but the focusing distance is different if you are at 17 mm vs 70 mm
I've got good price on 16-55 f2.8 (760 British Pounds) and it's insanely sharp lens. Nothing like I've seen on Sigma 18-50 while I had my X-T5/X-H2s. Tamron is tempring but bit large.
I had both lenses, first was the tamron, then I had to change to the sigma because i coudn't use it on my gimbal. I miss the extra 20mm but the sigma is still great, and due the "macro" I can use it to shoot food content.

The sigma is definitely smaller and lighter. Which gimbal are you using? The tamron should be able to balance on most newer full size gimbals no problem
@@keith-knittel yeah Keith I've seen a video where the exact lens barrel position was zoomed to mid way and balanced and it worked for him I guess. Also another thing that worries is that since zoom is towards outwards ie. External zoom it creates vacuum and sucks in dirt as said on forum and reddit. That's worrysome

If I could only afford 1 lens atm, should it be a prime or zoom?
This is a completely loaded question, but this is how I would answer that.
for portraits, I typically shoot 35mm-85mm at f/1.4-f/2.8 on full frame and I typically shoot cars at 16mm-50mm f/2.8-5.6 on full frame. There are always other cases where I would shoot with a telephoto - but no way would I buy a telephoto first, or even second.
I'd pick up the tamron 17-70 for general work, and then some sigma apsc primes for the portraits.
Again, this is what I would do. No idea what fits your particular needs/shooting style.
I am so confused and tinted about deciding either of these two. I do travel videos, mostly using my zv e10 handhold for B roll shuts. Budget is cool for both, few things; is VC really matters? Soft image quality matters alot on sigma? Help me out!
Stabilization is nice for small jitters, but it's not as good as a gimbal. For me, I don't mind lugging around large cameras if the image quality is what I want. So the Tamron is the better bet for me, however - if the size of your camera keeps you from using it, then by all means take the hit on the image quality at the wider end and pick up the Sigma. It's still a fine lens, as long as you know how to work around it's quirks. I can't answer that question for you, just depends on how you use your camera

The Tamron 17 70 stabilization works better on not FX camera , can you have test with another camera a6000 series maybe because i have a a6700 and was a owner the fx30. I can't do the test. If you can i will wait the video, Thank You
The FX30 is my only APSC camera, I'll see if I can find an a6000-series camera to test it out on
for many weeks im struggling to get either the tamron or sigma, I like the sigma small lens but I like the tamron quality to fit on my zve10 for travelling use.
Thats a tough choice to make! I don't mind larger cameras, so I like the tamron for the better image quality. But if size is the difference between you taking your camera around or leaving it at home, go with the Sigma if you are ok with the softer image quality
The Tamron has slight brown or (as some testers say) orange color tint. There are videos online which show the difference, blue sky, white clouds and snow seem ab bit dirty looking. A NOGO for me.

You should have showed the stabilization without IBIS since most aps-c cameras don't have it
This might be a stupid question but, isn’t stabilization really only beneficial for video? I have an a6000 and we’re going to Iceland in three weeks and trying to decide between those two lenses. We only shoot photos tho.
Stabilization is fantastic for handheld photography, especially if youre shooting with a slower shutter. If youre using a tripod, not as big of a deal - may smooth out those times when something bumps the tripod

I use full frame lenses on the fx30 a lot since I have other full frame cameras. I’ve been keeping the 20mm 1.8 on my fx30 a lot lately!

Keep in mind that there will be a 1.5x crop on the FX30, so the 28-75 turns into a 42-112.5mm

I think you had a lemon. I had the Tamron too (not anymore) but the Sigma was sharper in the center all the way, even at 18mm.
I agree, my sigma is extremely sharp. However I did test it against my friends tamron and noticed it right away.
So you guys would also recommend sigma over tamron for videos?
I love the size of the sigma, but i went for the tamron anyways. It is a pain in the ass for being a lot bigger, but the stabilisation is so worth it for my A6400 and the more focal range is also a big plus. Image quality is also great. And now in June 2024 there is almost no difference in price anymore. On amazon germany the sigma costs 549 euro and the tamron is 565 euro. So not really a reason to look at price anymore.
I share those same thoughts, and I'm surprised at the Tamron's price - much closer to the price of the Sigma. Thats a solid deal for the Tamron
Im new in the câmera/lens world. O ordered a a6600 body only yesterday and still dont know which lens to buy. I Will do some travel photos and some CZcams/tiktok videos. Im between 16mm 1.4 + 30mm 1.4 or only 18-50mm 2.8. Any advice?
You need a zoom for travel so you won't worry about changing lenses
I would recommend to start with the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8. That is a very versatile setup you can basically use anywhere, and will give you great photos and video.
Then you can always consider adding an extra prime lens later. This zoom lens would also pair well with the Sony 11mm f1.8 or Viltrox 13mm f1.4 which are both great lenses for video and then you have something which is no so close to the 18mm side of the Sigma zoom (the difference between 16 and 18mm is not much, between 11 or 13 and 18mm is significant difference in field of view).
The 18-50 for sure. Save the prime lens for a future upgrade, 18mm is gonna be enough for vlogging and wide open shots, and the 50mm range will be awesome for some portraits and close up shots... all of that without having to change lenses with all the range between 18 to 50 available
@@Edwin-- thanks! Probably i will go for the 18-50mm 2.8 and maybe a 56mm 1.4, land a 13mm 1.4 later. Do you know how the Viltrox 56mm 1.4 is compared to the Sigma 56mm 1.4?

Ive used tamron 17/70 on zv e10 and a7c last on for testing with zv for 3 months. Mainly used lens vc but footage was jerky and even with post stabilisation was bad. Switched to a6700 and sigma 17/50 great combo light and no much difference in quality. But weight reduced significantly! There are some examples on my channel.

@@noormuhamed17 I hoped same but tamron has ruined some of my footage make it unavailable to shoot handheld with sigma never experience such things. Maybe they will fix it in feature firmware . But I know many people used it with fx30 without issues.
i have both, going to sell the tamron, its just to heavy after a while, i mean, after like a year i just dont shoot as much because its a whole thing to bring it along. its a great freaking lens though...just wish it was smaller....oh hey, a sigma

heck yeah, no good tele option aside the 70-350 which is overkill in terms of reach but lacks in aperture :(

How do you feel about the Tamron 70-180 2.8 for full frame? It’s decently sized for the bodies (although a little large) and also more expensive then a dedicated apsc but what are you hopping for in the apsc?

The Sigma wins for me, hands down. Size, price, sharpness (other YTers find it super sharp).
It's softer wide open at the wider focal lengths, if you need sharper images, shoot at 30mm+. If you prioritize a lightweight kit and are ok with that - it's a great lens for you

A lot of hoo haa going on about RF opening the mount to Sigma and Tamron. From what I see here, not interested in either. Ill stick to an ef 24-105 with speedbooster for my r7.
