I think your videos are spot on. I am Greek and lived in Scandinavia for 20 years, after returning in 2018. I can tell you my experience. I think one goes through phases in life, and in every phase, you are looking for different things. For example, I did my PhD in a Scandinavian university and worked there for roughly 15 years after that in the IT industry. It was a great time when I was a bachelor, I enjoyed it very much and travelled quite a lot - it was a transactional lifestyle, wherein I gave my job everything and got back the reward. When I finally got married and had kids, priorities changed. Suddenly Northern Europe didn't feel right, the relationship shifted from transactional to wanting a deeper cultural connection. I did not want my kids to live far from grandparents, far from the culture I grew up in, in a cold country that advertises "quality of life" as if it was a metric you could quantify. As kids grow, they will also have the opportunity to go abroad and study as I did, but for me childhood/roots are extremely important. I never regretted my choice to come back, it was the right decision at the right time! An advice I want to give you - do not forget Venezuela. Take your kids on trips there, they are Venezuelan as much as they are Greek.

    • @ash3rr
      @ash3rr Před 19 dny +1

You went too light on the details my friend, elaborate: wanting a deeper cultural connection. I did not want my kids to live far from grandparents, far from the culture I grew up in, in a cold country that advertises "quality of life" as if it was a metric you could quantify.

    • @thanasisk
      @thanasisk Před 17 dny +6

@@ash3rr Sure! The cultural connection I was talking about was that in Scandinavia, I always felt a disconnection from the values, traditions, and familial bonds that I grew up with. This was even more pronounced considering what I wanted to pass on to my children, such as the warmth of extended family and the sense of belonging that comes from being in Greece. I think Scandinavia was great, as it gave me an awesome financial base and a head start in my career that Greece could never provide. But it came a point where I decided to move on. Part of the trick of living a good life (in my opinion) is not only making a good choice to start something, but also knowing when to stop. What is "good" or "bad" depends on your context (age, family situation, financial situation, etc.). Hope this helps.

I did not move to Greece for a better life,a better career or for a better future. I also didn't move because I am greek. My parents freaked out when I told them I wanted to go live there. They told me I would be going back ten steps in life but I did it because I wanted to find myself and because I was in love with Greece....and I had only been there 3 times in my life. I can totally understand what he is saying. It is something you feel you have to do. As someone who moved to Australia cause i met my other half over there, i can def say the quality of life in Greece is much better. Not in terms of money and wealth but entertainment of course and beautiful places to go to! Food as well! There are so many things you can do in Greece, which you won’t find in Australia or the UK. I had to come to Sydney to realise how much better it was to have sunny days most days of the year. Or having beach bars, and def not sharks in every single beach! Though be mindful prior to 2011 Greece was totally fine with jobs and the economy, so i’m hopeful things will return back to what they were back then. But wherever you are, you need to integrate, otherwise it sucks big time. This is true if you are an expat living in Greece or an expat like me living in 🇦🇺.

It would have been easier if you had traveled to Greece often. I have been around 15 times to Greece. I know what to expect with certain things. Things that we do not experience in the U.S. , I know because I am also a Greek American. I plan on living in Greece for 1/3 of the year. I cannot stay there longer than that. The Greek system , banking, the drivers, other things, are much too insane for full time. It has not changed in many ways since the first time I went to Greece in the late 70's. Yeah technology is ok but that's not what I mean. Go to a bank to make a transaction and you will find what the Greek system is about. Try to get married in Greece and get the paperwork from the Dimo or the Mitropoli and see what the Greek system is about. Try to tolerate people waiting in line with you and who ask if they could go in front of you or " are you going to take long?" , which is pretty rude but not exactly uncommon in Greece. The personal space thing is an issue too. It doesn't exist. Other than that, I love Greece as long as I am near the sea somewhere in Dodekanissa or central Aegean. I am not saying Greece is bad, I am saying that you will be in for a big shock if the first time moving to Greece will also be the first time visiting. Bad combo.

    • @washcloud
      @washcloud Před 5 dny

In general it has to do with one's character: maybe a hater will hate wherever he's at. Then it has to do with what exactly is that you hate there: is it the environment? Do you hate big/noisy/polluted cities? Or is it the people? Or something entirely different than that? It also has to do with the people that are close to you, as in relatives and friends: if you have ones that you're not in good terms with, is does it maybe have to do with who YOU are? Do you have some life companion? How's it gonna be for that one, if you want to move to Greece? If you're on your own it surely simplifies things to a certain extend. If I were you, I'd first try to give it a shot talking to some expert, like a psychologist about all that (hating Dallas/thinking of moving to your grandparents' place). Maybe such an expert will help you identifying or even issues you maybe having. Then again, maybe all that I typed sounds like a bunch of BS and you're OK with yourself and just need to find a nice resting place and maybe the land of your roots IS a good idea after all. However it doesn't seem a good idea to just flee the US and move here, without having seen anything of here first. Are there any relatives? If yes, contacting them first would be a good idea. Maybe they could accommodate you for some time, in order to get to know the place. And in general you should first visit at least once to see for yourself how it goes. It also has to do with your age. You spoke of retirement, thus you're not that young anymore. Got the guts to make such a change (linguistic, cultural, etc)? And you have to be very careful about the place that you're gonna be in a trial period: will it be Athens? Big/nosy/polluted/bottlenecked city (has its cultural perks though). Is it gonna be some island? You have to make some good choice, since they're not all alike (generally Crete is a good choice, for a number of reasons). Or you prefer some provincial town instead? Depends on a myriad of parameters, which kind of place suits you the best. I guess you mean you intend to buy a house, so since prices vary, according to the region you'll be interested in. Unless you're loaded and you don't exactly care about prices.
As an epilogue: you can certainly find nice places in Greece if you're an older person seeking relaxation for his retirement. The sun, the sea and nature in general - not in urban areas - are unparalleled, for almost 2 3rds of the year. The people are, let's say "easy-going" in average, warm and welcoming - yet all this you have to first visit here and see for yourself.

Just as living in New Mexico and strong Hispanic, Native American culture, after being raised and living in the northeastern part of the U.S., I loved the life style of New Mexico and then traveled to Greece and fell in love with this country. There are a lot of parallels between the 2 cultures, sunshine, easy going and relaxed attitude towards life, as well as the music, food, and attitudes. Being raised in the American northeast, also has many parallels to England. Much of the culture from the northeast can be contributed to Northern Europe, England, Holland, and Germany.

It's interesting to find that the people who end up moving to Greece (at least in my experience) usually have a very multicultural background, and I feel like the asymmetry or difference of greece is what makes Greece special, and is what attracts the people who want to live here permanently, as opposed to other places most people would not consider as a conventional place to immigrate to. I had a very strange feeling when I was there - and later found out that the week before our visit, they had attempted to clear out the stray population by poisoning them all. This seems to be the method used in general. When I got home I found a petition signed by thousands trying to boycott tourist visits because of these issues. I personally would find great difficulty in living somewhere - no matter how beautiful - if I had to watch animals suffer at the same time!

    The City
    By C. P. Cavafy
You said: “I’ll go to another country, go to another shore,
find another city better than this one.
Whatever I try to do is fated to turn out wrong
and my heart lies buried like something dead.
How long can I let my mind moulder in this place?
Wherever I turn, wherever I look,
I see the black ruins of my life, here,
where I’ve spent so many years, wasted them, destroyed them totally.”
You won’t find a new country, won’t find another shore.
This city will always pursue you.
You’ll walk the same streets, grow old
in the same neighborhoods, turn gray in these same houses.
You’ll always end up in this city. Don’t hope for things elsewhere:
there’s no ship for you, there’s no road.
Now that you’ve wasted your life here, in this small corner,
you’ve destroyed it everywhere in the world.

Same here. Left the Netherlands and the UK to come to Greece. We compromised for an increased quality of life, MUCH better for the kids etc.. The only thing you have to do is make sure you set yourself up financially.
I also now ignore the Greeks etc who criticize exactly the way you describe, usually it's too early for them, but in many cases the time comes when they realize and change their minds.

Every country has its own negative and positive sides. Our relation with the country we live in is not one-sided, but it's a relation of interaction and interdependence. At the end of the day we will find out what we really received and what we have given to this relation. And if we manage to truly make peace with ourselves, no matter where we decide to live, we will feel at least satisfied, if not completely happy. However is really annoying when we realize that the only reason we live in a country is nothing else but economic.

Listening to your experiences and reflections reveals a complex journey of seeking identity, stability, and happiness across different countries. Your narrative suggests a deep search for a sense of belonging and peace that transcends geographical boundaries. Here are a few insights that might help you reflect further on your experiences:
Understanding Rootedness and Mobility: You have lived in various countries, each offering different aspects of life-culture, economic opportunities, and social relationships. It appears that your mobility is not just about seeking better economic opportunities but about finding a place that resonates with your sense of self and where you feel at peace. Reflecting on what aspects of each place have contributed to your feeling of peace might help you understand what environments you thrive in.
Concept of Home and Identity: You mention feeling connected to different places for different reasons. This indicates a fluid sense of identity that adapts and changes depending on your surroundings. It might be useful to explore what 'home' means to you-is it a place, the people, a feeling, or a combination of these? Understanding this can help you feel more grounded.
Dealing with Change and Decision-Making: You've made several significant life decisions, such as moving from the UK to Greece, which were influenced by personal relationships and family considerations. Reflecting on these decisions and how you felt at those times could provide insights into your values and priorities. It might also be beneficial to explore any unresolved feelings about these moves, especially if there's any sense of regret or what-if scenarios lingering in your mind.
Coping with Cultural Transitions: Your narrative shows that transitioning from one culture to another has been both enriching and challenging. Recognizing the skills and coping mechanisms you've developed to navigate these transitions could strengthen your resilience and adaptability. It might also be helpful to consider how you maintain connections to your past while embracing your present circumstances.
Finding Community and Connection: Your story illustrates a search for community and connection wherever you are. How you forge relationships and build networks in new places is crucial to feeling settled and happy. Reflecting on how you've managed to create these connections in the past could guide you in maintaining and developing new relationships in the future.
Acceptance and Contentment: Lastly, it seems you are on a continual journey towards acceptance-of places, experiences, and the choices you've made. Finding contentment in your current situation, recognizing the positives, and accepting the negatives, can contribute significantly to your overall well-being.
Reflecting on these points might provide a clearer understanding of your needs and desires, helping you find stability and satisfaction in your current life and any future changes you might undertake.

Wow, just when i think i can't hear any more wisdom from you, i hear more by the bucket load. Thank you, my friend. My wife and I are currently moving from Alberta to New Brunswick, Canada. We are on the road as I type. We have become tired with the pace, the politics, the mentality of a lot of people in the cities in Alberta. So we are moving. As a Brit, half Greek living in Canada, I can say with 100% certainty that i fully relate to your reflections here. I came to Canada to be with my Canadian wife, but Canada has disappointed me so far. Let's see what this move brings. I am pining for Greece but i know right now at least it wouldn't be right for me and my wife. Being an immigrant with multiple identities is not easy, especially when your home country was not serving you well. I say this because if it was, you wouldn't have left in the first place. That is my experience with the UK. I am so aware of my privilege of being able to move around BUT that privilege should not get in the way of wanting a fulfilling life. Thank you as always for your thoughts and wisdom, and for making this video off the bat.

The governments have mismanaged the country and tax the people like there is no tomorrow. Australia is no longer the lucky country. The Australian government lacks empathy and compassion towards there citizens it is so obvious in everyday life, its almost like they are doing it on purpose, run and controlled by a foreign entity. The globalists have infiltrated every sector of society, media, government, politicians, musicians, sports men and women. They perceive themselves as magicians, warlocks, witches, sorcerer's. Occultists members of the secret societies. Take care my friend.

Great video. As a local we have had an unfair load of crises and misfortunes here that led hundreds of thousands to flee abroad and, guess what, only a tiny fraction of them ever returned.
As long as you retain your original nationality and passport you'll be fine and find plenty to enjoy.
But when you start feeling at home, feeling one with the place and the locals, watch out!
Because it's then that the countless plagues of modern Greece will start coming after you.
Disrespect for the person next to them, passion for the past, as far back as it goes, despise of the future, always looking backward, always clinging to the old glory that cannot be replicated.
Misery and covert hate about those who have it better in their lives,
Conservatism, religious fanaticism and above all, a tyrant State that been been tormenting its people for decades without an apology. A state that sees you only as a euro bill, a payer for life without ever allowing you to raise your voice for a better future. See, no mystery in Greece going bankrupt over and over again.
My words are well meaning. At the end of the day you know better and make judgments for yourself!
Have a nice stay, my friend; just beware the Greeks bringing gifts😅😊😅

A typical stereotype of living in America is that we have money. Almost every other Greek that I’ve come across in Greece assume that boy are they wrong. I work a trade and hustle and the money isn’t enough. Most of us just get by and let me tell you something. I’ve also noticed that Greeks from Greece are generally happier than us here. Don’t get me wrong I love this country but it’s not an easy life. You’re always on the go rush rush and half that the time there’s no reason to.

Most hate their life in Athens. It's a harsh, gritty city with crumbling infrastructure. But they have few options to leave. Life provides challenges wherever you live, but economic opportunity is not the same everywhere.

Summer ⛱️🌞 is crazy hot 🥵 and winter is bleak most things shut down. Unless you have real money behind you and own you're property ECT then survival is unlikely. Over the years I have seen many people come and go. And usually it's when the money is starting to run out . Taxes are high and rents are high too. The cost of food is rather expensive. The typical Greek attitudes is everything is about drinking frappes and eat sleep 😴 during siesta don't expect too much.

It's cliche, but the childhood years are the most formative. We want our children to be around people/culture we find aspirational, we are trying to mould them into the people we want to be. At least as men, I think this is true. If we found ourselves in a country that does not align with our values, we can survive there, but we do not thrive, and if we do not value ourselves, we don't value our children. What do you think?

But as our girls are getting closer to high school we know that there is a good chance that we will move wherever they decide to go to college. But the most difficult part about living in Greece is the lack of water!! Drought is a huge problem here. Water is an essential basic need and unfortunately it is becoming such an issue its forcing people to move or pay more money to fill up their 5 ton water tanks in order to have for their basic needs. Maybe because you've never lived in a place where it rains all the time and people are grumpy and passive aggressive.

My Greek friends will not go back to stay in Greece, mainly, because of the very corrupt medical system…stay healthy and and pay for your own medical insurance

FYI Greece has the best doctors on earth and the medical system is FREE !!!!!!! Where else you can find that ? Your Greeks friends talk BS

IMHO, referring to you as an Expat sounds awfully priviledged. You have relocated to Greece basically from London to where you were living prior. Do you consider yourself too grand to be called an immigrant?

Please don't spoil the romance! 😂 Seriously, I wish this man and his family the best so long as he adds value to the economy where he wishes to reside and contributes to the local society. Sadly, these principles are rapidly disappearing in many other countries.

@@jagcentral I am simply pointing out the choice of using the term "Expat" that adds an aroma of priviledge to an immigrant that wants to pass the message that has relocated from the west to the east rather than the other way around.

If he intends staying permanently, then yes, "Immigrant" is a more accurate label.
