Laying Out Custom Hairpins - 1930 Ford Model A Roadster

- In the last update on the Sweetheart Roadster, Matt got the custom built dash tack welded to the restyled Model A dash rail. Before we work on any more body panels, the front axle has long been partially assembled and the stock wishbones are just tied up. A while back Matt started on the fabrication of a set of custom hairpins and things just weren’t turning out how he liked. After looking through his photo archive Matt decided to customize a set of “Kurtis” style hairpins. Matt walks us through layout of the filler panel and takes us on a trip to get them cut! Let us know down below what you think of the design for the hairpins!!!

Matt the scallops on each end made the classic difference . Nice job and stay safe.
I like the design ,what a sweet machine that is and the talent to go with it .Thanks Matt!!!!
Thanks for watching Jeff
State of the art, Plasma cutter CNC!
Way to go after programing it!☝️🧐😎⚡☝️Awesome out come Matt!
Thanks for sharing your friend for Canada Rob ✌
Super job Matt.👍
Hairpin holes will whistle like a flute, at high speeds..... Looks old timey great! : ) Subbed, and always a thumbs up!
Won’t be able to hear it over the loud ass engine haha
Morning Matt! Great work! Glad you still played your music at the end but still miss it as an intro. Be well, 👍💣💥👊
will look super once polished. soon i hope? they will stand out cool. keep it up guys. from northeast Ohio. be safe guys.
Read our minds!
Nice. It looks great. Thank you.
Nice going Matt with the design you saw in those old photos.
Sweet. I like the run to smaller holes. Sorry they cancelled Charlotte Auto Fair. Maybe we will see you on the reschedule date. Stay safe.
It's cool that to see a channel I randomly started watching about seven months ago and not knowing they are ocal to me and references places near me. Nice work. Linfield is a few miles from me. Not sure if I'll need custom metal cutting done but good to know.
Outstanding job 👍
I like the idea ! The larger hole for the tie rod is a bitchin twist the other holes decreasing & the out house cut (crescent shape) on the ends adds to the Ole School theme.
Thanks for watching!
Nice touch ! Great to something that can be applied to other people's projects. Something that be bought and then modified for those who can't fab everything.
Really cool. Been wanting to do this or similar for a long time. Oh. I have time now. Can’t go anywhere.
Cool look on a set of ladder bars as well. Be safe!
Perfect touch to the build, they are going to look great. Cheers
Thank you!
That diy plasma cutter is great, it would take a whole lot longer to make this by hand, love the design.
i loved it as soon as i saw the sneak peak. the kurtis style is best with an early 50s car. by the 60s the later style i think looks best depending on the car of course. the speed holes are a perfect touch. south paws are a creative lot.
Thanks for watching! Glad you see the vision haha
Good morning Matt, you always have cool stuff going on in your shop. This episode had one of the coolest. The computer plasma cutter is absolutely incredible. Words just can’t describe how cool it is. Your friend is a genius! Thank you for another great video, Jack
Thanks Jack! Yea he’s great with computers and that type of stuff! It’s all over my head!
Nice work Matt that looks slick love the look
The tie rod moves forward as you turn the wheel you need a big hole up front
That's gonna look nice !
Thanks!
Thank you guys for the videos as it is helping me keep what sanity I have left. Stay safe and keep care.
AWESOME JOB MATT! ....GREAT ARTISTIC VISION!! ....I LOVE THE CUSTOM PART OF IT! ...YOU MADE IT HAPPEN!!
Thanks for watching!
Looking cool guys.......cant wait to see this finished. happy Covid 19 everyone stay safe!
love the end result. Good choice and gives that classic look
I like the taper holes
Great episode I love your friends plasma CNC machine , very cool to watch in action..
I like that the guy built his own water jet cutter.
He’s a good dude!
Nice work ! 👍👍👍👍👍
Definitely the right choice on the holes. I’m sure they are going to look cool. Very clever with the steering arm through the last hole.
Nice video 👍✌
Cool hairpin design!!!!!!
Thanks for watching
Nice soundtrack.
Im commenting mid-Way, on an 1 year old video, but making the holes in 3 sizes, dimpled,
Largest in front and smallest in the back, but having a long hole in the front, for maximum play room because of Ackermann. I know I might be a little late, but I wanted to say something.
But that is sweet!
Nice job loving this build
Wow! Kick-ass video!
Awesome 👍
Looks awesome!
Looks great. Thanks for the video.
ROTH Mysterion-esque hair pins. Nice
Best car show anywhere!
Thanks so much
Nice classic look, I like it great job. That homemade plasma cutter is cool as hell.
Thanks for watching
You do awesome work man.
Looks badass matt keep up the good work👍
looking super cool
Would you be able to do a video on suspension set ups on hot rods? I love the videos! Been watching them like crazy. I love hot rods, early racers and classic muscle cars. I was looking to get myself and my little brother something to work on. Lots of 40s trucks and such where i live. We have been getting into body work and have done maintence and repairs on cars for years now
Great idea! We’ll work that into a future video
I really liked the first one.i love this car and your videos, so its ok! Lol! Have a nice day!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent choice Matt! This will really set the toaster apart from the rest! ...Newk from Kentucky
Thanks!
Nice Matt!
Nice Job!!
The front hairpins work well just like the way you got it. In the home garage we bent the tube around an early Chevy oil filter. The rear ones definitely needed something tying the top to the bottom as they will bend. That points the diff straight up and the drive shaft banging the ground. Been there done that. also on the front we always thought of sprung to unsprung weight for handling.
That's so cool 🙂 And it's good to have friends like that .
Yep that’s what it’s all about! Helping each other out!
It sure is 🙂
The Iron Trap tree cut towards the rear would have looked good and given the official stamp
Matt You might want to put an elips in the front hole to give you a little more room for travel with the tie rod thats what I did with my 32 truck in the wishbones
like your idea great videos
Looks good I like them
Thanks for watching
Nice job, I always make things at least 3 times to get it where I want it
Hi Matt great job love the design that cutting machine is awesome. Please keep safe from COVID-19 all of you and your families and friends. Love that pink or maroon shirt Matt with the holes and all looks great all you need now is the IronTrap Garage logo on it. Perfect shirt for working in mate. Please keep safe all you Americans our Allies always and the rest of the world too wherever your from cover up and sanitize. Jeremy Downunder
Thanks for watching Jeremy
Looks awesome, keep it up 🥃
Matt.... that is going to look great... wish I had one of those machines when I was building hot rods
Hi greetings from new zealand, you wear the same clothes as me... shirts by grinder. Stay safe.. love your work
I love the creative side too. Takes me a long time, but so much more satisfying when completed. Joel...... 👍👍
Thanks Joel!
Very Cool .. !!!
It's perfect 👍 brother 💙
It looks better with the cutouts at the end.
Kurtis hairpins were designed to deflect with the movement of the axle. By filling them you are effectively making the suspension stiffer.
Looks good
Yeah cool. I like it! 👍
Love your work thank you for giving me the spark I need. To build hotrods
Thanks Mark! If all we can have said to done is to help motivate guys and gals to work on their projects than we have succeeded!
IronTrap Garage No thank you
Like it , looks like plane construction 😎
Dig that track T picture. What a rad ride. Where is that today .. I wonder ? Sweet video. Like the end result. Fun part of this .. is .. .. .. don't like it .. .. sell to someone else, & make another. Love this.
Hey Matt & Co. another great video, well, the secret is out....my Wife now knows who you are, since I'm on temporary layoff because of that stupid virus, I try & keep up with every new video, she asked me what was so interesting on my phone, she also now knows of the $20 project I'm planning, I blamed you for that(Lol), but she agrees the mustang race car needs to be finished first....I definitely agree, you can't do this without friends either for technical support or shop support. I like what you did with the hairpins, looks great!! As always looking forward to the next video!!
Stay healthy and safe!!
Haha remind her it’s better than watching naked chicks !
looks reallycool
Nice!
Great video and cool Kurtis style hair pins. I think Frank Kurtis influenced old Hot Rodders. I owned two Kurtis Midgets a Offy and a V8/60 .
It's so true! You see a lot of the of the race car parts trickle down into the hot rods as you watch the progression over the years in the old magazines. I thought for the era I'm building this car it fits well.
THAT IS COOL 👀
Nice
lOOKS GREAT MATT
Thanks for watching
Looks cool, very classic design
Nice! I make a lot of patterns doing leatherwork.
Only way to do it!
I think making the holes out of round stainless steel tubes would look even better.
Looks good to me.
Sooper Cool
Hi Matt dash looks great..as for the hairpins since you have access to the cnc plasma thing you should incorporate your iron trap logo in the plate. I know your going for the old school look which you nailed with the plate just thought adding logo would be cool.
Not a bad idea Nick, just trying to keep it subtle
Enjoyed
Thanks for watching
Good Morning, Guys!
I think the name "IRONTRAP" would look good.
I definitely think the half moon cuts on the ends look bitchin, super classy
Look great Matt.
All too easy to get slag when working with lasers too.
Stainless steel flames in there.
The tapered holes look great,
Rick B aka Plastic butcher
Thanks for watching
I would of cut out the words "Iron Trap" in script and welded that in the middle !
At the beginning of the video I thought I heard you say that you could have holes that were "sheep" now I can't help but think that was a missed opportunity. Just as a joke since the finished product is great.
I think you did a fantastic job but I like to Keep It Simple . I would not have gone with the boiler plate look. Its your car have your way!
Get episode Matt, it’s all in the details.
I like it but would you try diamond shapes before you commit to circles
It looks good, but I wonder what it would look like if you had big holes on each end and step down to the center, still enjoyed the video thanks Matt
bonus to rounded end i'd think it would be stronger than 2 45'5 is there a better side to the hairpins as to welds.
