Fixing a $12 "Inoperative" Argus C3

  • I recently picked up yet another Argus C3, this one was listed for 12 bucks on KEH as "Ugly" and "Inoperative"-basically a steal (I grabbed it along with an 8" Wollensak lens for my Century Graphic). KEH tends to grade aggressively, which means all this little fella needs is a bit of cleaning (cracked lens and missing rangefinder window aside), and it'll be back up and "operable" again.

PS you can customize them you can ask for which color you want I have light brown and black kind of like the matchmatic look even though mine's a rangefinder but they sell all black if you want the rangefinder look and it's pretty good quality just got to be careful sticking it on because some are more stickier than others I've had ones that will not come off to fix and I have ones that do but it takes a little bit to get off to fix

I love the idea of a vibrant orange leatherette-I've looked into it before and will probably do it for a future Argus! :D

    Interesting video man!
Only a few minutes in, but your video style is very relaxing.

I appreciate that Micah! I hope to do some more camera repair/tinkering videos, sometimes it's just so much easier to not worry about setting up the cameras (and edit things down afterwards).

Hope it worked out! I actually ended up
passing one of these along to a photographer who took it up across the Northwest Passage, can't wait to see what shots he got from it!

I have not yet found any information on how to adjust focus alignment that's from the top of the camera. i would be grateful for any help. thanks

For the top focus, use tape to make a + on a plain wall, stand 3 feet away, and set the rangefinder to 3. If the focus seems off, open the focus adjuster screw cover cap (the little cover with 2 'dimples' in it on the top, you can use a variety of tools to remove this cover, though sometimes they're loose enough to do by hand.) Under that cap you will find 2 small screws, one adjusts the horizontal plane, the other, vertical. Adjust them as necessary while looking at the + to dial it in. Use very small adjustments as you go. When putting that cover back on, do not over tighten it, it is easy to cross thread it, and hard to get off. Hope this helps

Do you have a video explanation or a weblink of how to calibrate the rangefinder? I really appreciate any information about this! I thank you for this video, now I am not panicked about trying to fix mine!

I replied to another similar comment with this, replying here to help. "For the top focus, use tape to make a + on a plain wall, stand 3 feet away, and set the rangefinder to 3. They sell replacement leatherette skin for the argus c3 rangefinder on eBay just look up the year and model and it should come up or if not just type in the camera and look what model and type of leatherette pattern it has and see I have the version of the leather at for the Argus without the Argus badge or the 40's model

It looks like the comment was removed, but hopefully you figured out how to get the door to stay shut, Keiran! Feel free to shoot me an email if you still want help with that.

For 12 bucks you can't go wrong even if you couldn't fix it!

Agreed! I think that's my favorite price point for many cameras, it makes it less harrowing when you're tinkering with them-I picked up my Medalist for $25 and could not be happier with it.

There was a CZcamsr I watched and he had his grandma's camera that he inherited and it was an Argus C3 Rangefinder from the 40s and I told him where to get the leather from and he's like thank you cuz it was peeling up and I wanted his grandma's camera to look good and I gave him a suggestion and he really thanked me and he gave me a heart on my comment so if you need that go ahead
