what a hero
barre the 2 on the last chord
That idea of keeping single note throughout a progression, something so simple but brilliant! He's a great teacher.
"I seriously don't care what chord that is."
Would have never expected those words from him :D it's so rebellious
Thank you guitar world! I'm so happy to see Guthrie on here. Everyone needs to hear this guy play.
Don't listen to those one-trick pony guitarist who say music theory is bad to learn, it's not. It makes you a more well-rounded and overall good player like Guther Govan here.
gorgeous chord progression. Just amazing. I love your shredding, but dude you got so much more than that. You've got soul and passion in your music that so many shredders seem to be missing.
the best pitch axis progression ever
This guy is awesome. Guitar world need more people like him.
C/Bb A/B C9 Fmaj9 Eadd9/G# G13 Bb7#11 and he ends with an Em11
for those wondering what the chords were called.
joeleke64 Bbmaj7#11
Love this guitar lesson Guitar World
Thank you very much man! I will play with these later.
funny, informative and inspiring. guthrie should take over guitar world.
That feeling when you see a Guthrie Govan video on your subscriptions.
Great, great stuff. I have nothing important to say really, other than thanks for putting these together - you're awesome!
i want guthrie to do audiobooks. he has such an awesome voice.
the end is so beautiful
Everything Guthrie touches is gold!
i love how he's so indifferent about the names of the chords he's playing. shows that he's really playing with his ears.
"...I seriously don't care what this chord is called..."
He knows theory for sure but he has to have a great ear too.
Guthrie saying Steely Dan is so nice to hear.
real
fantastic
Mind blown!
@smashboompow1 It's the backing chord progression to the song "Waves" off of his album Erotic Cakes
Omg! Guthrie Govan has a curved pinky too. Now, I have no reason think that mine's a inpeneterable limitation lol.
Badass droid
Jamtrack Central have the full album tabbed with the official backings :)
Amazing as always!
Thank you Guthrie.
I remember seeing in an interview him explaining it, and he said they are Suhr pickups. But look it up for yourself too.
@hjalmarBuoi It cancels out overtones, also deadens the strings if you put it on the fretboard in case you're doing some crazy string skipping tapping lick. Great piece of kit.
Amen. I've been thinking the same thing.
How can he be so good? Its ridiculous it goes to show how complex the human brajn is truly he is such an advanced human no way i could ever be that smart
I'd have to say that we are pretty damn lucky, even blessed, for you less secular types out there, to have such a creatively adept musician like Guthrie Govan create these videos for us. Free of charge no less. Think about that for a sec. Thank You (sincerely) Guitar World.
Great chords
When he did the chords I was like "Ah that looks easy! Bring it on!" then he did the tapping.... "screw it, I'm playing Xbox"
he is the most likeable guitarist, i have ever seen
the chord progression alone is sweet.
greatest all around guitar player who ever lived
MAESTRO
@acdcyoyoer Not exactly, pitch axis is changing the key to another with the same root. You could always have chords that share a note while staying on a single key, for instance
an E minor triad (E-G-B) and an A minor triad (A-C-E) share the E note, yet they're both present in the key of Gmajor/Eminor.
@agavalence Guthrie is a large jazz fan, and these kinds of chords are right up jazz alley. Take a walk around the world of jazz saxophonists and jazz guitarists, and you'll find this kind of thing all over the place.
@Socioistic I think it is because they learn solos from a tab of a favorite song but have no idea how to jam within the key they are actually playing in. That is why it is so important to learn all the chords positions and the scales. As Guthrie says don't let the scales rule you just use them as a tool to expand on your talent. Jamming along to a backing tracks using your emotions and feelings is an important part of developng your ability to improvise.
@wilsinhobatera Yes he does. The Brighton Institute of Modern Music in England. I had him as a teacher, not only an amazing player, he's also the most engaging, funniest, nicest guy ever. Best teacher I've ever had.
That single note that's found in all of the chords is what Satch refers to as a pitch axis
6x555 would be c e g (which is a C chord) and a Bb in the bass. So It's definitely right. You're also right. It's kind of subjective. But my version makes more sense because it's easier to read than Bb(b9)(b5)(6)(no 3rd). overall in jazz you could be that specific, but trust me, they'll prefer C/Bb because it's easier to read.
@tripletth THANKS !!!
@Socioistic I suspect that it's because people who learn by tabs and videos end up not listening to closely to what they're playing. They just learn the fingering and picking patterns. People who learn by ear are probably more likely to internalize what they've learned play.
@hjalmarBuoi It prevents the part of the strings that's between the left hand fingers and the nut from vibrating while taping.
@shahrullz1 its a break in his song Waves which is amazing
oh my f*cking god, those chords are so magic o_o
I'd love to hear Guthrie just letting loose and shred. If he did though a black hole would probably be formed right were he is and the planet would implode.
There is a video around of him and Petrucci trading off at JP's Guitar get together
@haruko958 I'm not sure if I agree with that. I really like that chord progression. But each to their own.
I really love the crossover potential that Guthrie has because he forces people who may not generally be into that stuff, check out jazz vocabulary :)
Anyone know what he's using for his bridge pickup? Sounds incredibly mellow for it which I dig.
Oh i see! No that makes sense man, I guess i've just got an old-skool way of thinking of that kinda stuff. No worries :)
Actually, Joe Satriani's quote on Guthrie Govan's Erotic Cakes album was "it put a smile on my face a mile wide".
Satch isn't the kind of guy who wants to put down other musicians but rather wants to help them grow; he's taught a lot of the 80's legends including Vai, just as Guthrie is currently teaching at an English University. Apparently the response was that Guthrie wasn't well known enough for a decent turn out, which may or may not be true, but Satch and Guthrie are fans of each other.
is the tab posted somewhere?
The Ab steely dan chord is a Abm7addb13
can´t figure out the last chord, can someone help
WHAT. Guthrie is too good for CZcams Guitar World
@TheJonOhBoy best comment... i felt like you after watching it...
correct me if im wrong but when he plays the cords and they all havee that one note in common thats basically what the pitch axis theory is about right ?
His thing about keeping the E note in every chord, that's kind of the idea behind Pitch axis isn't it?
Thats a badass steroid
lmfao...should be mantra of some UFC fighters
EFFIN' THE BASS!!!
Abm7#5 - A flat minor seven sharp five
Guthrie IS the G3.
G3 means : Guthrie Govan with Guitar.
@brosaguitar I think he's talking about Eddie Van Halen
does he teachs in any music college? he's a great teacher.
@eddieisfiction Based on the many videos of both guitar players
@radomu1 Awesome
@vanhalenreserve
Not american mate. GG is from the UK ;)
whats the name of the intro song? not shred intro, the song.
Teo kolić Should be Waves.. it's a song by Guthrie
Yea. Abm7b13 it is.
@hjalmarBuoi well because you're tapping on them
@radomu1 that feel*
Thats why God's given us ears!
@LikeFreakingEpic being narrow minded is sooooo good, so that there`s no room for mistakes.
@jburde But he uses it liek a Bb, so yeah.
That's a super-ss-rally-gt-fastback-hardtop-sprint chord in there.
@eddieisfiction That's way underselling Guthrie.
Almost feels like 'Sisters' from Steve Vai ☺️
The chord C with Bb in the bass...Lydian vibe? Maybe I'm not proficient enough with theory but I'd just think of it as the 3rd inversion of C7, haha.
yeah you got it right there, very good job fine sir XD
It may be easier to think of it as E2/G#
how high is he.........but seriously....super clean
guthrie KNOWS about the steely dan sheeet
I was always too impatient to learn music, but I still nod along as he tosses off the b flat major seventh sharp eleventh spiel. Deal with it.
@haruko958 Ha, I see where you're coming from. Every time I reply to your comment I get to watch this video again so I'm cool with all this :P
hes like the albus dumbledore of guitar. from guitargwarts.
@musicmaniak512 GG is past G3.
You have to be used to hearing odd things to be able to understand jazz/blues/rock mixtures. seeing as everyone is complaining i suggest you listen to allan holdsworth.
@eddieisfiction Greg Howe.
Yeah Guthrie uses the pitch axis in some way
Or Ab min7b13
Oh man that lick would be sick with a bassist playing the low pedal notes you're playing
RS, you forgot the RS man, how could you ?
this song is called "Badass Steroid"
everyone stop commenting and start listening, jesus is speaking.
Did he tap with his pinky ? lmao
