    Well, I guess I was wrong. The old guard actually did it this time. Ekström and Peterhansel sacrificing their own result in order to help out Audi's leading driver Sainz was a great showing of team effort in contrast to Prodrive's puzzling way of handling things. Just sad to see Al Rajhi and Quintero drop out of contention so early on in the rally, though through the way the two-day marathon stage was scored, Yazeed Al Rajhi now has the distinction of having been the only driver in the history of the Dakar to lead the rally overall despite retiring his car.

    It is so amazing to see daring, highly engineered concepts being up to the task. I hope that many more manufacturers see this as a motivation to go on and try such things, as they can yield in such amazing victories for a brand and its engineers. Another such example, albeit not as successful but at least as cool as the RS Q e-tron, is the 997.2 GT3 R Hybrid.

    So Audi just asked FIA to allow them to have big tires and 4wd?
    And FIA said, yes no problem here is T1+ for everyone. Well isn't that nice.
    How about for the longest time when there was just Peugeot with 2wd an big tires and Toyota with 4wd and small and FIA didn't want to make the rules "fair".
    Toyota had so many punctures for years and was annoyed by it and complained about it all the time. But FIA said it's ok, and rules weren't changed about tire size and drivetrain type.
    Can anyone explain that, because it seems someone in rulemaking really liked Peugeot and later Audi?

  • @stevieray6216
    @stevieray6216 Před 4 měsíci +5

    What I don’t like about Audi’s triumph is that they basically steamrolled the competition with loads of money and even got the rules taylor made according to their wishes. 🤑 It’s a gigantic marketing coup for battery cars - a drivetrain concept that even they realized is like a fish out of water in the Saudi desert. So, with money not being an object, they went out of their way to develop a purpose-built hybrid technology you won’t find in their showrooms. 🙄
    On the other hand you gotta acknowledge their good teamwork (which Loeb bitterly missed) and drawing attention to the Dakar as an event. So after all it’s probably a deserved win. 😕

    Regarding the fuel economy you compare the 295 liter to the standard 500 liter tank size. Question: does Audi have a fully charged battery for every daily start? If yes, you have to add this energy portion in the comparative calculation.

    • @dhanu_4539
      @dhanu_4539 Před 4 měsíci

      I doubt it. For the range extender to have the best effect the battery should be as small as possible without sacrificing performance. In the new hybrid sports cars it's around 10 15km. Considering the weight of the Audi the EV range is likely to be even less.

    • @AR_434
      @AR_434 Před 4 měsíci +6

      They have a 50kWh battery pack. Gasoline has 8,5kWh per litre. So the energy in the battery pack equals 6 litres of fuel. If you take the efficiency of the range extender into account, a full battery at the start is worth about 15 additional litres of fuel. The Audi’s drive train is much more efficient than its rivals.

    • @AR_434
      @AR_434 Před 4 měsíci

      @dhanu_4539 Před 4 měsíci

      @@AR_434 I think that you aren't accounting for the weight of the vehicle. In proportion it's a small battery. The idea is quite simple fuel has great energy density for it's weight, While batteries dont. Electric drivetrains are far more efficient than an IC drivetrain. So carry as much energy in the form of fuel and gain the maximum benefit from both.
