Who Is Gil Scott-Heron? has been re-released to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Gil’s album, I’m New Here.

“In 2010, Gil Scott-Heron made his first album in 16 years, ‘I’m New Here’, on XL Recordings. We directed the video for the title track and got to know Gil a little around then. Sadly, he died the following year. A few years later Richard Russell from XL suggested making a film.
Gil left behind a body of work that has influenced writers, academics and musicians. He’s been called ‘the godfather of rap’ and ‘the black Bob Dylan’ and his words have influenced every generation of hip-hop.
This film isn’t about that Gil. It’s a portrait seen through the eyes of those who loved Gil, his friends, his family, and the musicians he played with. This is the Gil we met, the places he took us to see, and the people whose lives were changed by him.”

Tears of joy and gratitude running down my soul. Saw Gil in Seattle at “The Bank “ night club in the early 70’s, he and Brian Jackson and the Midnight Band played 2 sets a night for 7 nights. I was blessed to be there for 14 sets. My life from that moment on was transformed. I had recently returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam, looking for some “Light” to balance out the darkness I carried in my “Bones”. I am eternally thankful for being touched by the Spirits of the “Brother Man”pointing me to the path of healing and compassion for myself and all living beings. In UK he was highly prised. Just because he didn't go mainstream (maybe bar 'The Bottle') doesn't mean he was underrated. Black artists are often overlooked. Lets hope that changes.

I saw Gil open up for Stevie Wonder. Everyone was there to see Stevie...but Gil was very powerful.

Seen the same concert , but here in Pittsburgh . Pa . ( you know home to the Pittsburgh Steelers) lol - Awesome show ! Stevie is always simply awesome . Gil was a new artist to me , but didn’t want him to leave the stage . Great show !

Gil and Nikki Giovanni gave me my blackness. He gave me my identity for truth. I must have played his album so much that my mother began singing the songs herself. Truly genius personified.

As a kid growing up in the third world on the streets, listening to Gil made me feel whole, that I wasn’t alone, that suffering is universal and the will to remove your shackles is also universal.
He is one of the few people who genuinely changed my life and gave me a sense of joy, and I’ll be forever grateful for that.
The first time I heard Gil Scott Herrons, music was from a juke box in a candy store in my old neighborhood.The song was the bottle and I must of been around 12 or 13 years.I am 57 years old and still listen to this mans music.May he rest in peace.
I stumbled across this documentary by Gil by accident his music has played a imported part in my life . The track the bottle resonates with me as my brothers dependency with alcohol ironically his father was the first ever black signing to ever play for Glasgow Celtic in 1951 . Further more gil heron senior presented my father with a football trophy as a young man . Guys give it a play enjoy the man was a true talent.

"Home is where the needle marks, try to heal my broken heart" Poor Gil never did manage to kick his demons. He wrote about them with the poignancy and sensitivity that only someone inside that situation can really understand. And so much more of course. What an extraordinary gift he left to us all.

Loved him so much since discovering him in the 80s and was lucky to see him twice. The first time I fought my way to the front of the stage and got to shake his hand; he took my hand in both of his and gave me that smile - I will treasure this forever. Thanks for this film, has brought tears to my eyes. An insightful genius who left us far too soon and would have plenty to say about the state of our world today

I loved Gil. I discovered his music while working at a record store in the mid 80's. We had his best of LP and after I heard it the first time I was hooked. One of my favorites was "Whitey on the Moon". Funny, telling, deep, sharp, he was the man. I still love his music to this day. So glad I found this documentary.

Those things indeed stand out yet my personal favorites are Whitey's On The Moon, Peace Go With You Brother and We Almost Lost Detroit.
I also really like The Gun and Inner City Blues. What an iconic voice!
Pardon Me America is another one that resonated as Trump was pardoning crooked Republicans and military members who had committed war crimes.
Bridges is fantastic. I wish somebody took the time to truly remaster it. Same with Secrets and 1980. I wish Rhino would buy the rights to all his stuff. They could give his catalog the love it deserves.
Had the privilege, pleasure and honour of co-hosting Gil Scott-Heron (and Michael Heron) at the Spectrum in Montreal in 1997. This was the highlight of my life.

I stumbled across Mr. Gil Scott Heron on Spotify a few days ago and I instantly recognized that spirit that we get to witness in certain individuals every once in a while! In my generation it was Tupac Amaru Shakur. When I came across Mr. Gil Scott Heron music I was in complete aw !!! The truth of his words and how ppwerful they still resonate today is just incredible!!

His voice 'entered me' like no other artist and it is still with me.
Wow! Due to a month long coma, I'd forgotten about Gil Scott Herin. But today my soulful nephew sent me Gil's, dot dot dit dit dot dot dash message. After listening, I found this message here. For, what is meant to be, will be. Can't see being a poet, heading where I'm headed, and not being familiar with this man's work. As a result from spinal encephalitis in 2002, I now suffer from epilepsy and severe memory loss. Came out of a month long coma and couldn't remember a thing. Didn't even know my own one year old son, whom I'd given birth to. Today my memory's the same. Even so, this spoken word flows from my soul like the wind blows. Poetry is my closest friend now. How can I not be in touch with this man's work? I see my nephew had this same question in mind as he sent this to me today, and a thank him for reacquainting me with this Angel. Ultimately I thank God for touching my nephew in regards to me. God knew I needed Gil's word at this time. Thanking my nephew Thomas for being spiritually balanced, the late Gil for sharing his awesome word knowledge and again, most of all I thank God for mercy and ordering my steps in this. Moving Forward Brothers and Sisters!☮💕🙏🏿
My auntie turned me on to him....when 12 or 13. It was the seventies and we spent summers in DC. He was wayyyy before his time. Probably shaped my thinking through adolescence and into early adulthood. Got to see in concert back in 2000 or 2001. That was probably the last for me

Wow! Brings back memories of my precious few times spent with Gil, absorbing every word as it resonated with my soul. I was like, "this man gets it," as he reaffirmed my perspectives and broadened them further. Watching this, I now realize how much of an impact the blessing of exposure to him at 17, 18, 19 years old had on the foundation of my intellectual fortitude and spiritual convictions regarding social justice & deeper still the meaning/purpose of my life. I will always be grateful for this & the aspirations that Gil inspired in me.

Wow. I keep going back to this video because I loved GSH when I heard him as a child. Then, later in this journey rediscovered him, posthumously. I'm so tortured that I could have actually hunted him down in my 20's or 30's or 40's or 50's. I'm 58 now and I'm in love with a dead man. Every Fall when I walk on leaves....in my head will pop, "footsteps sound like crunch". You are my soulmate, Gil. I'm with you.
Excellent documentary and a fitting tribute to Gil. I was front of house sound engineer on his last European tours and can vouch for the complete authenticity and sincerity of those in this video. I´d like to shout out to Glen, Tony , Malik and others who did not feature in this docu.

Back in the mid 70's I caught Gil and Brian do a gig in a club outside UofA in Tucson. They opened for Freddie Hubbard. As I expected, they were magical and the crowd loved it, bringing them out for 2 encores. Freddie then played his set, and was at times upset at the relative lack of crowd reaction. It was a short set. Thanks so much for sharing the film!
Alundrachile. That often happen Gil being the first act a concert. The same thing happen when we went to see Tony Williams. Gill and Brian blew everybody away.
As a young girl, I listening to Gils music on the radio. He came off to me as an important person.
I think I would have been about 13 or 14 years old the first time I heard " The Bottle " and then a few weeks later the album " Winter In America ". I was a fan from that very moment on. Gil was an extraordinary artist ( I should have used a capital " A " for he really was an " Artist " in the true sense of the word ) Gil took the the angst of real life struggles and poetically ( and musically ) turned them into complete " Works Of Art " songs which demanded to be heard. He was a true great. A political educator and someone I regard as a real legend. The Art / Music World lost an irreplaceable soul when Gil passed. I still listen to him regularly and I am so thankful that he shared his rare, brutally honest, gift with us.
I wish he was still on this earth. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert two times and it was magical and inspiring.
Thank life for Gil and the beautiful legacy he's clearly left behind. His words/expressions helped me to better manage the hard times and cherish the seemingly insignificant moments we're taught to ignore.

I met Gil in 1974 at Fort Valley State College in Georgia. I was on leave visiting my girlfriend at school.She was so happy to inform me that GIL SCOTT HERON was appearing on campus!!! I got to shake his hand.This a Great Soul that touched us.He was one my HEROES. seen???

Spending time interviewing Gil in Sydney in the mid 90s was more like a father/son chat than a media interview...it was a life changing experience for me being introduced to the world of Spirits from Gil still lives on in my daily life today...Was also blessed to witness a few of his incredible live shows including in Harlem at The Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture. I once called him on the phone to see if he wanted to come back to Australia for some performances but he said in his distinct voice and tone that he was too busy so It didn't eventuate unfortunately! Got to see him at a Lounge cafe on Walnut St in West Philly in 2010...sad that would be last time, i was listening to him since childhood via my mother and father...their ear became my ear and he was one of my all time favorite artists in any genre. His poetry, spoken word, musical arrangements were beyond comparison.
I got to see him at the Tin Angel the same year. He was magnificent. Miss Ann was on piano and I spoke with her for about 20 minutes. What a night.
My ex- taught me a lot about music and introduced me to THIS KIND of music, more so this Man! Gil Scott-Heron. find him so loud and just saying what needs to be said ever so quietly. I absolutely love his voice, very different and one of a kind. Hes a very beautiful spirit.

A truly inspirational artist, he brought a reality to the world with such poetic genius. I feel very fortunate to have seen him live in London in the mid 70s. I first heard his music on the Old Grey Whistle Test where he performed Johannesburg (What's the word? Johannesburg).
There are not many truly visionary artists that have left a significant musical and cultural heritage as a gift to the world, Gil Scott-Heron was one of those who did.
Thanks to Tony Dokoupil on "CBS This Morning" mentioning his name and music two seconds before going to a commercial break today, I found myself searching for the song "Whitey on the Moon" Mr. Dokoupil uttered with unrestrained enthusiasm which eventually landed me here to watch this extraordinary documentary. I am baffled how I could be living on this planet for almost 60 years and never being exposed to this loving, talented, and genius of a man and his music. And eager to discover more of his music and read his words of wisdom infused with his sense of humor.

Was introduced to the revolution won't be televised by a sample in today's genre, but it resonated sooooo much, I had to find the original and when I did. I realized why some would say music is now trash!!

As I crossed Europe on a ship of confidence in my longest-lasting relationship, I didn't see the wind turn and didn't expect that stutter of a wave she made that sunk my boat. Four countries away from mine and finding it hard to breathe, the only tangible soil that my feet had reached were Gil's words.

I agree Edward. Brian Jackson helped him write during the early seventies. I had the pleasure of seeing Gil and Brian on stage in 1976 during there "First Minute of a New Day" album tour. Brian was on the acoustic piano and Gil was doing his thing singing and giving us his message. Powerful it was....

Bought his dvd Black Wax in 2004 from car boot sale for a £1 in Cambridge UK. I didn't know anything about the brother but what attracted me to his dvd was the cover illustration of the dvd with huge afro with kinda small hat resting on top but not able to cover much of the hair. That artistic impression led me to buy it and the fun part of it, the dvd was still sealed. That turned out to be the best investment of life time. I have introduced him to dozens of my friends and every time we congregate, we play Black Wax and it doesn't bore us a minute and every one has a personal copy - appreciation of art and Gil's contribution to humanity.
