Heroes in History: The Black Priors

  • Behold, the Black Priors. After doing careful consideration and deliberation, I decided that I should approach this from two perspectives rather than one. On the one hand, the fighting style and weapons of the Black Prior are definitely inspired by Norman Knights....but his appearance, and even some of his cosmetics make me connect him to a single man...Baldwin IV.
    I hope ya'll enjoy this little dive into the Black Priors inspiration. Please do leave a comment with your thoughts. Don't forget to like and subscribe if you haven't!
    See ya!

Also, the crusaders came from all across europe, Germany, France, Spain, England and so on and only managed, with all this effort, to hold on to Jerusalem for 100 years. At roughly the same time a Mix of arabs and local berbers managed to conquer the complete iberian peninsula, and held on to big parts of it for about 800 years. They also turned it into one of the most prosperous regions in the world with the biggest City Cordoba inhabited by 1 million people, which included a sewage system, unheard of at the time, and libraries ten times bigger than any other european ones, only comparable to Baghdad and Damascus.

(also the Berbers were pushed back due to the Reconquista eventually so its almost even but Islamic Rule in the Iberian Peninsula was only completely eliminated with the fall of Granada)
      While Islamic Rule of Iberia did last longer but this was due to its closer proximity to the North African Islamic States while the Crusader States had to rely on the Mediteranian.

    Ubisoft should embrace the Leper King angle. The red rocks (I forget the name) should be exposed to Vortiger and give him leprosy. Then release a couple leper helmets and armour for Black Prior.
    Maybe thw lead Warminger could punish Vortiger with corruption, like Appollion betrayed them. Feeding the vicious cycle narrative of the early seasons' lore.

    I would like to point out that there MIGHT be another inspiration behind the Black Prior this being Dante from Dante's Inferno. Yes I know this is a Divine comedy but I'm talking about the video game itself, in this analysis! If you look at the Black Prior, Story and Design wise there is a lot of similarities. First lets talk about his Look more noticeably his hood and crown. In the game Dante's Inferno, Dante wears a Chainmail hood with a crown that looks like crown of thorns, Then when you look at BP he is dawning a hood that looks almost identical to the very hood that Dante wears. Moving on from his design if you look at the story of Dante's Inferno, Dante was a Crusader who pledged his loyalty to the church (this being the order of the priors and Apollyon in For Honor) when Dante broke his promise to his beloved Beatrice after betraying her, he threw himself into the gates of hell to redeem himself once more! (this being the faction war in For honor) not only to her but to god and those he wronged in his past. If you were to compare this to Black Prior and his Dialogue where he says that he would "step out the shadows and show them true darkness" and "The Time to Repent is over" this could be another reference to his Redemption Arc after the defeat of Apollyon and her legion which lead him and his order into hiding and being disgraced (similar to Dante and his quest for redemption). anyways this is just my take on him! thanks for listening! love the vids!

    I think he’s probably or is (the male version) Vortigern who didn’t just go by that, it changed depending on the brittonic language sometimes called vortiger. I see no other reason to call him that, vortigern was also known or at least written as being a relentless pursuer pushing back the Picts and anglo-Saxons much like bp. England is kinda fractured by Anglo-Saxons and bruttonic celtics depending where you’re from. But anyways, I believe he is vortigern.

    Baldwin didn't actually wear a mask, to the best of our knowledge. That's something Ridley Scott invented alongside half-visored helmets and Napoleon leading cavalry charges. Good video, though!

      Okay, cool. Well I'm a historian myself so I get that. I was drawn to the game for a similar reason. I'm not talking down to you, I was simply providing an explanation. The character inspired by Baldwin is, in the lore of the game itself, a woman named Ravier. Though she was modeled after and inspired by Baldwin, it is not meant to be directly him. I understand the confusion there, so I was simply explaining that.

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree. According to my research on swords and classifications, I used "A General Guide to the Wallace Collection," which is a book on the Wallace History Center in London which covers history from the 15th to 19th century. In this guide, on page 149, it says "...the longest varieties were the two handed sword (wielded in great sweeps with both hands); the half-and-half or bastard sword (wielded with one hand, but to give extra effect the left hand could be brought into action); ...." (pg 149). This classification implies the bastard sword to be a sword not unlike what Warmonger uses, where it could be two handed as required.
      The arming sword, on the otherhand, is a general term to refer to knightly swords of one handed variety, usually with a blade length of 28 to 31 inches. But more accurately, according to "A Glossary of the Constrction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor" by George Cameron Stone, he saays the term arming sword usually refers to an estoc sword when worn as a side arm. The estoc differs from the general term arming sword in its length because the blade can be about 36 inches or (at its longest ) 56 inches.
      My point being here is not to call you out or say you're wrong. If you have found some other form of evidence that says the sword is a bastard sword, please feel free to share it with me. I would be delighted to learn more about it and, should the evidence be found reasonable and accurate, I will gladly amend my statement in the video.

    • @Hadras7094
      @Hadras7094 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RavenKnightYT I'm sorry, but I didn't fully understand the point.
      Black prior uses his sword one handed. The length of the blade is a bit on the long side for a sword only thought for one handed use (as far as I know, at least). That, combined with the fact that some of the handles leave enough room for a second hand, leads me to believe that the sword could very well be used two handed to a similar degree of effectiveness to that of a longsword.
      What I mean is, isn't this a bastard sword? As you said, "Wielded with one hand but to give extra effect the left hand could be brought into action", fits perfectly to the description of vortiger's sword.
      I don't understand the comparison with warmonger's sword either.
      She uses it with one hand, but, as far as I know, a sword of that length would be impractical to wield one handed. Isn't it too long for one handed use, and thus, not a bastard sword?
      I would really appreciate if you could solve these questions.
      Lastly, I just want to point out that some of the facts I mentioned might very well be wrong, which makes this whole argument invalid. I apologize if that's the case.
