  • This video just shows a few of the things I did to troubleshoot my leaking carburetor. It actually stopped leaking for the first time in months after I put it back together on this video and remounted it on the bike. Stupid temperamental POS.

I found why mine was leaking, there was some stubborn dirt that i couldnt see and hadnt flushed out from the inlet on the carb into the body and in the area where the fuel moves to the float needle valve. Blasted it with the hose (or compressed air) and it freeded up, this was the 3rd time i had tried to fix it in a year, just shows that its attention to detail that can fix it. Good luck.

Nice video! I've just got a 1995 KTM 300 and has the same issue. Yesterday I slightly bent the metal plate that keeps the float needle, hoping it will stop leaking when put on the sidestand. But I couldn't check the needle position on the slide as I don't know how to extract it... it's different from the PWK Polini clone I had on my Beta.

So i have a 12 to 16 style pwk 36 that has the same problem, ive done everything you have done . The seat appears to be non removable. So i ordered a new one from jd and problem solved. I do prefer the pwk to all aftermarket smart ish carbs as they just run better if you jet them correctly.

Just adding comment. The jet block gasket is rumored to contribute overall to the float not sealing. So, I replaced that and still no sealing, dribbling out the overflow but less than before. Had an old tuned mikuni TMXX on the shelf with Ron Black mods. Confirmed Suzuki RM125 settings (for a KTM 200) and she runs amazing. No fuel dribble. Of course bought bike second hand and even the float bowl gasket had grown and no longer sealed. Suspect exclusive use of ethanol fuel 10% on that one but CANNOT understand why the emulsion tube won't seal with a new float valve. Oh well, abandoned and shelved for a carburetor with a lot less use on it.

Thank you for the video, this seems just to be an ongoing problem, have the same issue on my TM EN 300 2016, i try to fix it maybe i find the problem.
Did you changed the O-Ring between the brass float valve seat, and the aluminium?
I will tell you if i find the problem.
Just curious, have a great day. :)

I have the same problem with my pwk 38mm but on mine it is actually the needle seat that's leaking gas through and overflowing all the time, I haven't figured out a way to replace the O-ring without destroying the brass seat because here in Mexico it will be impossible to find a new one

Get that needle seat out and clean the underlying screen, also check o ring
    good luck

I believe only the fcr has the removable seat with the screen and o ring.

I had the same problem on a gas gas 300 Keihin carb. In the end I worked out that the brass overflow tube inside the float bowl that had been bent and was too low. I straightened it so it was more vertical and the problem was solved. I presume a previous owner had tried to force the bowl on and caused the damage?

@Zeus33rd did you figure out what the issue was and how you ended up fixing it? I seem to have a similar problem with my PWK36 from 2008 KTM 200 XC-W

In my case, it was the float needle seat that had some slight corrosion. I assume from ethanol gas. That meant the needle was never going to seat, ever. And since the seat is pressed in, that required a new carburetor. In my case I bought a smart carb 2. And I only use ethanol free gas now

I know this was long ago, but did you get it sorted out? My 2015 Husky (same motor and carb) is driving me nut with the carb issues. Even put in new crank seal, as I was told that will foul plugs as well..

    • @Zeus33rd
      @Zeus33rd  Před 3 lety +5

In a word, no. I never figured it out. I was so fed up, disgusted and frustrated with the stupid thing, that I sold it and bought a 38mm SmartCarb 2. That fixed everything. I sent the Keihin to a guy on the KTMTalk forums, he wanted it to trouble shoot and diagnose as a curiosity. After looking at the needle seat with high powered magnification of some kind, and seeing a small bit of corrosion, he thinks that maybe ethanol gas or something, corroded the non-serviceable brass seat and it was never gonna seal, no matter what I did. I guess it he got it going again with some serious work with lapping compound or something. After seeing what the ethanol did to the rubber fuel lines, I think it's plausible. I haven't bought e10 ethanol fuel since. Ethanol free in everything I own, even my new to me Toyota Tundra Limited. The SmartCarb is expensive, but well worth it if you can swing the cash. Waaay cheaper than a new TPI bike. No jetting, needles, tuning or taking it apart ever again. Just get on it and go.

@@Zeus33rd You’re not going to believe what I found. The reason my bike was bogging, wouldn’t hold an idol, and was fouling plugs like crazy. Like you, I completely rebuilt the carb. Replace the crank seals, and even the coil after watching a Slavens video.. Nothing worked. Then I decided to check my reeds. Well, one inside was completely gone. Was sucked into the motor.. 2015 Husky TE 250 with 150hr, should have never happened. Luckily no internal engine damage as these are designed to be chewed up in the motor and basically dissolved from everything I’ve read. Nobody on CZcams talks about this. I almost feel like making a short video after I receive my new reads..

Having the same problems with a 2015 200 xcw same carb. Did the same thing the OP did and frustrated. Someone said to pull the float needle seat. How would you do that without ruining it? And how would you put another one in? Ktm parts catalog doesn’t list a needle seat.

Interesting. I have a brand new carb that I wanted to try on my '87 LT250R with the same symptoms. It wasn't leaking until I fussed with it and now I can't get it to stop. I should've went with a Lectron. Probably will, but I have all that money in this carb and intake... grrr. I just want to understand the f'ing problem now.
